Horns vs Bears thread

Folks, all of us are super pissed and super frustrated over the last few months, nay, decade. As true fans we hurt. We voice our anger and criticism---some justified, some not. There is no one more guilty than me, although I vehemently reject the quitting charges. That's others opinion, and that is fine. Sark make north of 5 mil. He ought to be able to handle some criticism. Lots of us HFs have highlighted the problems. This is good. Pollyanna views will not correct problems.

HOWEVER, this program is not a nuclear wasteland. We owe it to the team and, importantly, ourselves, to note positive things in addition to the negative ones. Believing in yourself goes a long way to solving a lot of problems. Why should we point out positives? Because we are part of the Longhorn culture, maybe in a tiny way, but a part nonetheless. At least this is how I choose to end my game day.

I'll start. Xavier Worthy and B.J. Foster are warriors. Damn proud of them. Whatever physical errors they may make, they always show up every Saturday, strap on their gear, and bust their *** until the final gun.

Hook 'em out.

I get what you are saying, but if the team and coaches are reading this or any other fan board, the program has bigger problems than any of us can imagine.

Happy for the VB team, but again, a home football game brings in $12-14 million, a VB season brings in what - $25,000 for the whole season.

Has the VB team sent thank you notes to the football team?

Difference is their coach has a couple of very recent natty trophies in his case.

So you’ve been clear and repetitive in your disagreement with the Sark hire - fine, counterfactuals are the easy road. We’ll all find out in due time.

Aside from it being the very high-probability stance to take if winning a National Championship is the only bar, let’s get your prescience fully on record by learning who WOULD have been your top selection for this job last year. It’s very possible you shared your preference for another guy back then, and I am unaware but let’s have you make a selection rather than merely ing CDC’s incessantly with no alternative suggested (at least that I’ve seen).

Lets also try to live in the real world by removing the small dinner table of men who’ve recently won and are going nowhere, so nobody named Saban, Swinney, Day/Meyer or Belichick.

Kirby Smart was/is going nowhere either, but I’d give you him anyway b/c you’d risk looking even more impatiently silly taking a guy who’s had 5 full years post-Saban to build the program after not being a successful head coach before. As far as I noticed, 4 games in you were declaring some kind of personal victory in the Sark failure dept.

Skins on the wall seem to be the only requisite that I’ve read in your posts, so I may have taken those away from you. What now? There’s Orgeron I guess.

Card is a four star and is not mentally ready. Recruiting classes can sometimes be misleading

You are right, Card was just borderline 5 star and only the #2 qb in the class.

I still ask how can recruiting rankings always be wrong for us?

According to 247 we have the most talent in the conference combining the last 5 years. We have beaten OU 4 of the past 5 years. Only Bama and Georgia have out recruited us and Clemson would be close. Its not recruiting. We have the talent to play better than this and the team is regressing not getting better.

Big XII composite rankings the last 5 years for Texas.

Yeah Vol...I just dont get those guys here that keep pumping the we've got no talent drum. Recruiting rankings aren't everything...but they aren't nothing either. And anybody who knows anything about football can watch us play opponents and see rarely is there more talent on the other side of the ball. It looks like better preparation, looser, more confident, more assertive and prepared..but not a talent disparity. Sure we could use a few guys at a couple key positions...but so could the teams beating us. Its college football...Outside of Bama and maybe Georgia, Ohio State....everyone is getting by with less than perfect talent. I still go back to culture...and the fact that it takes time to turn a corner for most larger schools who have hit a rut. And regardless of people pointing out those instances where a new guy comes in and hits an immediate homerun....for every one of those there are 5 more that fail or take a few years to gain any real traction.
We dont look like a bad team. I think we look better than in the last 10 years...I do. Theres just something off that is holding them back from getting over the hump.
For now...while we may be impatient overall...it is time to be patient with, support and believe the best about this regime and the process. If we are losing like this next year...then a little more justification for concern. Again...all one needs to do is point to BU and Aranda for a good example.

This! Its not talent and its not "better recruiting". Sark needs to change the soft and quitter culture that exists here. When the going gets tough the Horns board the bus. Its not easy and his ability to change that culture will define Sarks success or failure long term.

Goglo - moral victories are for aggie.

We have the wrong qb starting.
We have a poorly coached team.
We have a terrible defensive scheme.

This game was hard to watch, I had to do some yard work before I posted.

The team just misses on opportunities more than others seem to. We have serviceable talent in some places and great talent in a few, but lack depth at many important ones. A quick microcosm for some perspective on the talent we do have:
Denzel Okafor was a highly sought after recruit. Everyone was after him. The young man has had 3 head coaches, 4 offensive coordinators, FIVE different offensive line coaches and multiple strength coaches. There’s no consistency and no development of any kind that can happen with that. I’m sorry. People site all are stellar ranked recruiting classes… then where’s all the first day draft picks over the past decade? Talent hasn’t been developed due to inconsistency and or lack of ability by previous staffs to do it. A coach has to be able to evaluate players they want for their system and then develop and mold them over 3-5 years to be in that system. That hasn’t happened here.
I also find the lack aggression/fight disturbing. Watching the ISU-OSU game last week was like another dimension then watching us play. I’m not accusing anyone of quitting but there’s a lingering culture problem.
Also, who saw the stat of wins over the last decade of Texas schools?? That was a heart breaking gut punch. Aggy, UH, TCU, Baylor all better in wins.
We have flashes in the pan because we have talent and good preparation and scheme. But when the other team counter punches our opening haymakers, we don’t respond. When a play has to be made, it often isn’t.
I’ve accepted where this team is after getting reality beat into me and I want Sark to be the guy and give him his shot. Who else you got?
I’ve been watching every Horn game since I was 4 and dreamed of being the Texas QB so I’m as frustrated and upset as anyone on this board. I expect more from this team then we are getting because they’ve shown it’s possible. Just my thoughts.

Watching the ISU-OSU game last week was like another dimension
Been making this game watching comparison for years. Herman winning the bowl games always was a ‘wtf’ compared to how we’d played during the season. I always credited the moxie of Sam for those wins, at least until CT played the 2nd half against Colorado. I didn’t watch it but listened on radio driving home to the ISU/WVa game and thought how they both fought like heck compared to our performances in the second half(s). I don’t have the answer (except we must have a better OLine) and will support them as always but we have serious problems.

Leadership is another issue. We miss Sam’s and no ones seems to be stepping up. If we had a Pitt/SMU/Boise St level offensive line, none of these conversations are happening. It’s awful.

A team with real player leadership would have circled the wagons and prevented the OU disaster from happening. This team has let it steamroll into 3 straight embarrassments.

How has our Ol recruits been ranked?

OL line play is much about technique, strength and intelligence. Texas coaching is 0/3 for many years now. This year is no different. The next OL class won't be any better if that doesn't change.

^^^ This.

I told others weeks ago that Sam was THE leader - the heart & soul of the team the last several seasons. He willed the team to win many games.

Sam is gone. This team has been without real leaders and they are still trying to find their identity / soul.

Just my .02

I answered this weeks ago. No one was available last season so why make a move that wasn't going to produce?

I'd have looked at Aranda, but would have given it another year. What he did at Wisconsin and LSU is nothing short of awesome, but I would want to see further progress. As a HC he's unproven. I'd have waited until the end of 2021 to see if anything of a huge improvement was available.

We made a poor hire. We're stuck. Should have waited a year or 2 for the right hire
