Horns vs Bears thread

I’m a big Casey fan but IMO it’s time for a change. Start Card. Shake things up. While Casey isn’t responsible for the drops and the fumble, his inability to use his legs on critical plays hurt us. And his inability to lead us down the field late in the last three games to a possible victory is what it is.

Im not saying that Card will be any better. What I am saying is that after leads and late collapses in three straight games, it’s time for a change. Card may do no better. He can’t do any worse.
I agree mostly. The sequence as I interpret it was:
1) Card beat Thompson out before the season
2) The overall team and OL (as we have come to know them) showed themselves in the Arkansas game, and created the false impression that a more mobile QB, even less accurate as a passer, would not be overwhelmed like Card was
3) the Arkansas game so sucked our soul out that it was also good to make any change, and CT seemed like he had more leadership skills
4) now, as the ship is sinking all around, CT doesn’t really have any leadership remaining, so that’s not a factor, and CT hasn’t been able to overcome the jailbreak OL either—not sure anyone not an all-American dual threat player could
5) So, not as a discipline or punishment to CT, but just as going back to the guy you thought was better in the first place, may as well play Card now. He will maybe get sacked a little more, and hit a few more receivers downfield, and the result will be about the same.

Like everyone else, I am sad and frustrated that the team is losing; it seems Murphy's Law of what can go wrong does go wrong in key moments. We, at times, seem to snatch defeat from victory. However, as upsetting as it can be, I am not going to give up on the team or coaches. A true fan is one who supports their team as they work to achieve success and still supports them even when they are struggling. We are definitely going through a rough patch right now and losing is not fun for anyone. Regardless of our current record and how much I hate to lose, I believe good days are coming and I am going to support the longhorns throughout the growing process.

That's our last 4 class rankings per 247 composite. If we can't do better than this with who is on our team then it's ALL on coaching not recruiting. We can have top 5 classes every year but what difference will it make?
Those are rankings based on play in high school. Consider high school rankings ore to be refined to get to a college level. If not done quickly, it rusts away.

I'm still more focused on the missed opportunities in the 2nd quarter than the latest 2nd half struggles...
But this "Bears" repeating....

Texas had these 2nd-half leads its last three games: Texas 38, Oklahoma 20 Texas 24, Oklahoma State 13 Texas 21, Baylor 10
It went 0-3.

I think the TCU game spoiled this team into believing they could be closers. TCU probably would have won the game if they had one more possession.

They just don't have it all together mentally. And we've been saying that since 2010, so I know it's not hyperbole or exaggerating. Whereas other teams tend to make breaks, we're always the team providing that opening for the opponent to create something. A dropped pass here, a missed tackle there. It's added up so much over the years that it just doesn't phase anyone any longer.

Sark's confused face is going to turn the same way as Strong's and Herman's the longer this failed culture continues.

Why did the players take steps backwards in the past year while Baylor's got better?

Or was Tom actually a genius to manage to get to 7-3 with this mediocre bunch?
Tom had a very good, experienced QB who had some very good receivers. Also , his O line last year was better than our current one. And his line backer Corp was better

I still stand by what i say.

Card has, Casey hasn't...
Handler, I am not saying that Casey is
another Brsdy, but his
main problem is his OL. The port guy has been hounded by the defensive rush our OL
simply cannot block. Most of his deep misses are the result of have one or more DL in his face.

We have got to get some OL and LB from the portal.

This team doesn’t show much grit or pride - their mistakes are just mind boggling - everything from the penalties, dropped passes on crucial downs to the fake punt today - bad plays and bad decisions have bad consequences - I’m hoping Sark will do some roster shake ups this off season - this season is done - we may win 6 games - what Sark does this off season will tell a lot toward whether he’ll be able to lead us back

Good point.

So, we are all supposed to go about our business and not be sick and got dang tired of watching double digit leads being blown and being right back in the 1980s and 1990s? And, we are supposed to not put those thoughts down in writing on a message board that should encourage an exchange of frustration amongst like minded fans when the team sucks? We can spend money on merchandise, travel, hotels maybe, tickets, food, etc., but then we must just shut up?

Is that right?

The proverb patience is a virtue means that it is a good quality to be able to tolerate something that takes a long time.

I also googled for “Patience is frustrating and I really want others to hear me whine and complain about it a lot”, but disappointingly nothing came up.

No fan relishes losing, and especially in this manner but not everyone is quite so short-sighted or willing to quit. Seems forums like this typically offer little interest in the furtherance of virtuous behavior, but rather to provide ridicule at every opportunity…..but I’ll not give up on it either.

These are all valid points. Just speculation but one has to wonder if this team would now be 7-1 or 8-0 with Sam at QB. We’ll never know, and Casey has been handicapped by a weak WR room, excluding Worthy. Washington and Moore were nothing short of poor today.

Someone needs to step up and become a leader. I’m not sure we have such a player on the roster right now. Or if we do, they have yet to emerge.

Like I said in previous posts, there is a pattern here. Herman wasn’t good enough and this guy is worse. Who hired this guy with no head coaching success?
Clean-Ex QB’s don’t rant from what I’ve witnessed but maybe I’m being football position racist. When the second half surge comes from the other team you have to crush it or it’ll crush you.

The problem with our posters is that they want instant perfection.
Individuals and teams don't become great or errorless overnight.
We were so close on several plays that could have been game changing.
Its like we are almost at the top of the cliff but we fall back some. All we need is a handful of players in the right position. But that will have to wait.
We are doing the best we can with the players we have

Ever notice the self promotion by CT after games?
While discussing what went wrong he always finds a way to interject what a great game he played.
Start Card.

The guys on LHN pointed out some issues with this team that I agree with:

1. lack of overall depth
2. can’t hold a 4th quarter lead to finish
3. Too many dropped passes

Also, why the fake punt? That gave Baylor the ball near mid field instead of having to drive 80-90 yards for a score. Lots to work on before next week.

We have the players otherwise we wouldn’t have built these leads. Just need a better coach to understand how to deal with passion and desire instead of just focusing on execution while the other team has elevated desire.
Under the right coach this team would be undefeated.

Remind us who is asking for perfection or even greatness? I'll settle for 100% effort/intensity from start to finish, players showing improvement as the season progresses and better play calling in the moment especially on offense even though the defensive coaching overall is pathetic.

As of now I see none of the above. The defense is one of the worst in the country and our offensive play makers are regressing.

Totally disagree with this. Football is 4 quarters long. Bad players don’t finish games - you see this a lot with scrub teams that don’t make the plays needed to win. Like Kansas last week, or Texas for the past three.

Our team did not play well the second half. We need to improve—especially during the second half. But they’re not quitters, losers, low IQ individuals, stupid, lazy, other insulting words, etc.

Agree. The team is none of those things. They remind me of a young man who still hasn't figured out how to seal the deal. Remember folks: this is a brand new staff, with a brand new system, in the midst of their first season. Patience!

Just in case there was any confusion, I’m in the “give Sark some time” camp…

:beertoast:
Yea. But then again, what choice do you have? For that matter what choice does any of us have. The unwritten rule seems to have been give them 3 years. He will get that, even though many these days do not. I for one do not have an opinion of his "potential", but from what I have seen I will not fall for the great offensive mind bandwagon. I will support him until he gets a fair chance at some better players and from what I have seen this year the talent pool was severely overrated.

Texas fans had better support this guy and pray that he does well because another coaching change makes us another Tennessee, or worse. We MUST give him a chance, support the program and accept that this is not going to be an overnight turnaround. It could be worse, we could have a losing coach that is a dirt bag as well. At least he has the respect of many coaches around the nation. In the meantime. we learn to take the loss and voice our opinions as all good armchair quarterbacks do.

If the problem is the talent, then when can we expect to have a decent team? Sark isn't recruiting that well. No better than Herman ever did. Even if he did its year 3 or 4 before those guys are contributing.

But Baylor can go from not even filling their scholarships 2 years ago to better than Texas. They rebuild after Briles to better than Herman in a couple of years too.

Those guys didn't have to wait to completely retool their roster and recruit Top 10 classes 3 years in a row to be better than Texas. Do they have a S&C that is something super unique? I doubt it. Do they do a better job of teaching technique and holding players accountable for execution? Yes. Absolutely.

Sark never had to do that part at Alabama. Saban held the players and coaches accountable to do what needed to be done. Sark is essentially an OC while holding the HC position. He doesn't do any of the other part of the job.

I agree. Also, your forget the fans look at it as a program, not just the coach. We have been mediocre for over a decade. Also, look at Aranda…first year, great results. Coaching has been a huge problem here at Texas. Success as a head coach at a big program should be a prerequisite for being the head coach at Texas.
