Band and Cheer Stuff

I would love it if we were to play our own version of "jump around" at home games. You talk about getting pumped up! With a new coach it is a perfect time to start this tradition and it doesn't bother me if some other school is already doing this.

But then the drunks start jumping up and down and falling off the bleachers. Lots of sprained ankles and some fistfights.

duh!!! correcting ignorant people has become my FULL TIME JOB....
Well "duh" on you too! :tap:

At risk of being "Master of the Obvious", I was just pointing out that these leaks made it nearly impossible for them to ditch The Eyes. I wrote that because there was still some questioning in this thread as to whether The Eyes would, or wouldn't, stay.

UT-Austin releases report on history of "The Eyes of Texas"

Eyes of Texas History Committee Issues Report on School Song - UT News

And here's from the gold standard of journalism, an anonymous internet poster going by "KPRC User":

You want to know the history?

The writer of the lyrics was having a difficult time coming up with the lyrics. He was a known chain smoker. So his fraternity brothers threw him in a closet, without cigarettes, locked the door, and told him they would not let him out until he wrote the lyrics. So basically it was written while he was undergoing withdrawel symptoms. I'm sure he felt that the eyes upon him were related to being watched to determine his weaknesses, which, if you think about, is spot on the nose for a university fight song. Has nothing to do with racism, but everything to do with stalking someone to determine their weaknesses!

Betcha didn't know this. The tune may have originally come from Franz Von Suppe, an Austrian opera composer.

220px-Franz_von_Supp%C3%A9.jpg

“I’ve Been Working on the Railroad” was also called “The Levee Song.” The origin of that tune is unclear. The central theme of the song might well have come from Franz Von Suppé’s 1846 Poet and Peasant Overture and can be heard about one minute into the piece. The first publication of “I’ve Been Working on the Railroad” (music and lyrics) was in 1894.

The first segment of the first recommendation, page 7 of the Report:

"Reinforce to all that our school song will remain..."

Sooooooo........... the Band members will play it, or find a new band or school.

Their stupid bluff has been called, and they lost. Kudos to all the loyal Texas band members who held the line and supported our beautiful school song all along. You are much appreciated.

So an usher goes over and asks..."Are you hurt or are you injured?"

Fistfights will just be the game within the game...bonus viewing for the ticket holders.

From the report:

From Johnson’s family records, Lewis Johnson penned his view of private schools' view of state schools. Allegations were general that the scientific faculty was composed of infidels and the political science faculty of socialists: that immorality reigned on campus and drunkenness was rampant.* These false accusations touched Col. Prather deeply for they were wholly unjust. He was very sensitive of the fair name of the school and grew militant when called to defend it.

* Ha! Like you'd never find anything like that at SMU, TCU or Baylor...

So, nothing new then to hear it today.

Texas: Controversial song has 'no racist intent'

"These historical facts add complexity and richness to the story of a song that debuted in a racist setting, exceedingly common for the time, but, as the preponderance of research showed, had no racist intent, the report states in its executive summary."

Yeah no shite.

"The report recommended that students not be required to sing the song."

Have students ever been required to sing it?

"Hartzell was asked if the song had racist undertones. "For me, the song itself doesn't," Hartzell said. "But it certainly was present at different times where those undertones existed. You go back to thinking about its first performance in 1903 at a minstrel show. I mean, you cannot deny that that performance has the racial undertones, and overtones, if you will. Hateful things. But on the other hand, if you look at the way, to me, the song was composed, written and designed. ... It was not designed for that."

Duh.

"• The song borrows the melody of "I've Been Working on the Railroad," a song with racist lyrics, most likely because it was already well known and easy to sing."

Shocking revelation!

"• Performances at campus minstrel shows with actors in blackface, which continued into the 1960s, are a "painful reality," but the song did not appear to have been composed as a minstrel tune."

You don't say! I knew this a long time ago. I wish the idiot professor who spawned this nonsense knew this. Can we fire his *** for incompetence already?

"• The panel's 40 recommendations include teaching the song's history at student orientation events and allowing new alternative versions composed and/or performed by Black musicians."

The hell does this mean?

I must correct my response in that I was not being critical of your writing, at all, but the mere fact that the "Cancel Culture" had selected something that means a great deal to a great many for the purposes of a power grab and false guilt to folks that had never had a racist thought in their life.

I had personally been told by a casual "liberal" friend that "if I sat down and thought about it long enough....I was a racist." Well, nothing is further from the truth and his exposure to me over 40 years was only tangential and at a distance of 2200 miles....but somehow, he just knew I was somehow racist (if I sat down and thought about it)....my response: "only the hood-winked and dim-witted would even consider such."

I still believe that those in the LHB and that beautiful Drum Major lady be put in shackles for all of us to throw eggs at....repeatedly. Who the hell do they think they are?!!!

It was my understanding that both Hanna and the Chairman of the Music Dept (or whatever it's called) were under scrutiny for the handling of this, and could face suspension or "retirement".

Perhaps I misunderstood what was said, but as LHABSOB stated, there are obviously a large number of former band members that could LEAD the band. There was an assistant director in the early 80s whom I talked to in Palo Alto. Can't remember his name, but as I recall he and I shared some thoughts about having Cunningham bring in another Michigan Cow College reject. Just as now, I knew nothing about the band other than when I wanted them to play LOUD. I stupidly expected that guy to be the director within 4-5 years.
In the beginning of all of this I wrote both the Director of the LHB and the woman who is the Director of the Butler School of MUSIC telling them that their handling of all of this was deplorable and the "heads would roll" over their leadership or lack there of....then, after the LHB announced they were not going to attend any games in 2020, I wrote them, again....I copied CDC and the President, not that my voice means anything, but I felt better about it...
Trust, me, if both their heads roll...I will fly to Austin and time it such that I am there to throw eggs at them while they clean out their offices.

Can’t wait to hear them booed at halftime. It will happen.
I will be there "with BELLS ON" to taunt them arriving at the band hall, preparing before the game, marching to the stadium, in the stadium, at half time and their marching out of the stadium back to the band hall and their leaving the band hall. Beyond that, I am guessing the police becomes involved.....

I also sent the director of LHB and the Director of Bands at UT an email expressing my concerns as well. They were gracious in their response but they have to keep up politically correct appearances.

The good thing is that LHB will be fine. There are thousands of students to draw from who are all good players. I'm curious to see how many Black members there are next year. They made a big deal about themselves with LHBlack or something like that.

I don't have a problem with some people getting hurt.
Maybe nobody is getting hurt. If its well received at Wisconsin then perhaps here also.
It would pump up the fun for a few seconds.
I might even attend a game for an atmosphere like that.

PomPom,

I strongly urge you to visit your Aggie friends at Lockwood Andrews & Neunam to examine and learn about our one of a kind West side upper deck. I have sat under the press box for fifty years, but when Leon Black moved from basketball coach to something in the athletic department, Leon enlightened me about the upper deck (even though my brother in law worked for Lockwood).

Lockwood designed the upper deck to move with its weight load, meaning the lip can drop 10-14 feet when full. The first home game was Tech in 1971. Wally Pryor could not see the scoreboard, the clock in particular. That is why for years, there was a small portable "scoreboard/clock" where Bevo is now housed. That was so people in the press box & Wally in particular knew the time remaining.

I think playing "jump" is a recipe for disaster on the West side, as the athletic department has done little to no maintenance on the facility. I was sitting with Coach Ken Dabbs during the infamous Mizzou game rainstorm, Ken sat there and pointed out where the "waterfalls" would be cascading from the upper level. Ken knew what & where things needed to be done, but to my knowledge most of that has never been addressed - kinda like why can't you hear our WWF wannabe announcer in the club on the West side?

Can we please not make "jump" or any similar song our audience participation song.

Holy crapola! Not inches, but feet?! I may be sitting in the end zone from now on.

I've literally never been up there. And yikes.... considering the strength of the UT engineering department, maybe they should do a one over and make sure everything is halal up there.

I dont see any diversity here. What, no gingers? Canceled!

The song borrows the melody of "I've Been Working on the Railroad"

A song that (not exactly in its present form) was probably actually sung by some of the workers. Shouldn't it be a plus that the school song uses a tune of the overlooked laborer and not a high-falutin stuff nancy boy tune?
