2025 Recruiting - WBB

March 30, 2025 is expiration of Gerlich’s contract. I guess a private contract “might” be something our west Texas friends might do, I suspect any extension would be hard to keep secret. Especially since it would impact Chavez recruiting. Seems like I read where Chavez said having the same coach for 4 years was important. A 3 year extension in my math expertise still is one year short of 4.

Tech is 2-0. 30 point win over Houston Christian and 24 point win over Incarnate Word or visa versa. I’m thinking her schedule will start off well…..against weaker teams and flatten/drop later….like last year. Hard to sell that to Chavez.

Heard from Tech folks it was a three year extension, but wasn't made public.

Tech is a public university; legal contracts regarding coaches' tenures can't really be kept secret in this day and age. Plus, you would think Tech would want that kind of news out there so recruits would know about the length of the extension.

In my fair and biased opinion, Chavez and family never really expected to play for Tech. It’s the home school so don’t want to alienate the local fans. So the official visit is done. Gerlich can try and sell that if Chavez comes, other recruits will join. I’ve looked at the Tech roster and it would take 2-3 or more years to get to a representative team for her skills. That’s half or more of her college experience. Why? Join Texas and be playing for national championship in year 1. She can now say she gave everyone a chance. Just sign with the good guys.

Well, here we are 2 days away from the first day of the early signing period for the class of 2025. Obviously, most of us who follow recruiting want to know if Aaliyah Chavez will sign her LOI this month. I'd always thought she would as she seemed to be taking all her official visits this Fall. Then a few days ago, she told a reporter that she didn't have a timetable, and that she still hadn't scheduled a visit with Texas Tech; whether that was true or not at the time, seems that she started an official visit to Tech on Sunday, November 11 which I guess can last for 48 hours.

Very unusual not to have a Friday-Sunday official visit, but she was in some kind of tourney in San Antonio on Friday and Saturday; so, that explains that. Of course, she could have taken her official visit earlier in September or October as she'd only taken 3 official visits (Texas, Oklahoma, and UCLA) this 'Fall. But, she gave Tech the last (unless she plans to visit South Carolina) official visit; sometimes that matters, sometimes it doesn't.

It would be unusual for Chavez to complete her official visit to Tech on Tuesday (or Monday, I guess) and then to sign an LOI with a different school on Wednesday. I can't imagine the visit itself would have an impact as she knows everything there it to know about Tech; so, this official visit might be mainly about the NIL "negotiation" so close to LOI day without giving the other schools much time to react.

Aliyah Davis from Kansas is ranked #17 in ESPNW for 2025. I believe Moooo or somebody mentioned she had taken an official to Texas. Perhaps Georgia football game weekend. Texas is fortunate (I guess) to still be in the game for 2 high ranked players. Chavez snd Davis. With Crump only commitment, sure would be nice to have Chavez, Crump and Davis as Horns soon. If not, the portal will need to be our friend for next year’s team.

Yeah, Jaliya Davis has visited Kansas, Baylor, Texas, OU, and South Carolina. Looks like she was on an unofficial visit to Kansas on Friday night and in attendance at a men's hoops game. Seems odd that she would be at KU again so close to signing day if they weren't gonna be the school she signs with.

I’m getting anxious. For tomorrow. Signing Day. It’s like Christmas Eve. Sure hope Crump signs and we get more information on her. My Daisy Red Ryder carbine action 200 shot air rifle would be Chavez and Davis. But I would settle for a 45” Deluxe Leg Lamp (Chavez alone).

The only (good) news I have to post about Chavez is that Coach Lovato did include a clip of Aaliyah in her Instagram (story) from yesterday. So, that tells me our coaching staff hasn't been told "no" yet. Chavez does have a game tonight.

Not sure how reputable this site is, but they are predicting Aaliyah Chavez to Texas Tech and Jaliya Davis to South Carolina.

I think Chavez is a Texas pick. Only thing that worries me as of late is that with Preston and a possible return of Harmon will that shake things up and cause her today back away from us. Vic and this staff know how to close a recruitment so unless she just gets an NIL deal elsewhere that she can’t turn down then I think Texas will be the ultimate pick.

A player of her level isn't going to shy away from having other great players on her team.

Exactly. She hasn't probably even had time to watch Texas' first two games with her own high school season already underway. Preston has shown impressive speed driving to the basket; I don't see her as the same type of player as Chavez who has so many types of jump shots and step-back jump shots.

In today’s DMNews, recruiting signings were a focus. A big article on Taylor Barnes of South Grand Prairie who signed with Cal-Berkeley. The article said Barnes held Chavez to 2-14 shooting in a loss to Monterey earlier in the month. Didn’t check on it. But Barnes is a REAL player who just might be able to do that.

Is Chavez set on being a PG only? She seems like more of a SG to me, thus could play with Harmon, and Booker at SF.

Chavez's Monterey team is playing in the Allen tournament; it seems logical that she won't be focusing on any kind of college decision announcement until she returns back home to Lubbock (on Sunday?).

80% of tournament time is down time. Most of that time is spent on social media as teen her age would be.
My guess is she knows where she is going and will wait till she is back home so all her family can all be present.

Monterrey beat Cedar Hill by 12 Friday. Then lost 67-65 to Dallas Lincoln later in the day. That was first lost….11-1. No box scores available to see how Chavez did.
