2025 Recruiting - WBB

It's not like a player has to sign an NLI at all; Sabrina Ionescu basically waited until the summer after her senior year of high school and just showed up at Oregon shortly before classes were to start; she signed an ASA instead which is for the most part the same type of financial agreement. She had taken her official visits, including the one to Texas, in the Fall.

As for Chavez, no idea of her timetable. She didn't make many unofficial visits her junior year. Since August, she's made 3 official visits to UCLA, Texas, and OU, with a speculated official visit to Texas Tech yet to come; no rumors of a visit to South Carolina as of yet.

If she or her family really were "shopping around" I would have expected a lot more unofficial and official visits; but, that hasn't been the case. For Texas, I'm not sure if it lowers/increases our chances to sign her if she waits until next Spring to make a decision. To me, her not signing in November could be to make sure Coach Gerlich is retained and gets a contract extension; and, that decision won't happen until the season concludes next March.
You would think if this is a coaching deal the university would go head and make an extension if that is in fact what Chavez is hanging her decision on. Personally I buy into the Sabrina timeline more. Focus on herself and her final hs season. By now one has to think Chavez has some lean for a program maybe this time is just to give her some reassurance in that.

Sorry, no. A school's AD should never let a recruit's possible tendencies and decisions to dictate the big bucks deal of a head coach's contract extension. I agree with Tech not extending her up to now as she hasn't earned it. Even though Gerlich is in the last year of her 5 year contract, there is no guarantee that if Tech had extended her over the summer that Chavez would sign with them a few months later.

If she Chavez ends up signing with Tech in November, and Gerlich gets fired next March. Chances are high that Chavez would ask for her release and find another school if she doesn't feel comfortable with the new coaching staff.

Personally, I don't think Tech gets a better coach in Lubbock than Gerlich. As much as I don't care for her, I do think she's very good with the X's and O's. She's had very little to work with... one can no longer field a team full of players from West Texas and keep up with the evolution of the women's game. Signing a player like Chavez may bring others to Lubbock.

I don't see that many players from West Texas on her roster; four with Bristow of Wichita Falls transferring in from ISU. Gerlich's problem is that her high school signees and incoming transfers don't stay long and leave HER program. Like other programs, Tech has had their fair share of player injuries, as well.

Yes.. you are correct about the make-up of the current Tech roster. My point was that the game has evolved so much since that program's best years under Marsha Sharp. The combinations she was so successful with don't quite cut it anymore.

To add to that... I can't imagine a lot of people falling in love with Lubbock unless you're from that region. Thus, Gerlich has had quite the daunting task on the recruiting trail trying to bring in top tier talent.

Again, unless maybe they can grab someone like Bill Brock (who was once an assistant there) I think they'll be hard pressed to find a better coach than Krista to put that program in an upward trajectory.

When Tech hired Kristy Curry from Purdue to replace Marsha Sharp, the fan base grew tired of her as the program became stagnant; so, she bolts for Alabama before Tech fires her. In hindsight, no doubt Tech would like a re-do on that as Curry has done relatively well at Alabama especially compared to the last 2 coaches who followed her tenure at Tech.

Tx. A&M had highly rated player a few yrs. ago was a prolific shooter, but some of players felt she shot too much. One of those players transferred to UT. I can't think of her name. My point is beware of what you wish for. I think there is some potential for her to not fit into Vic's system. It all depends on whether she wants to be a team player. Also, NIL may be a set up for resentment depending on what she receives. However, I would like to see UT increase NIL money to all women athletes.

So, you think Vic and his coaching staff are mistakenly putting in all this time and effort trying to land this recruit who won't fit into "Vic's system" ?

Good point. I'm wondering though... Are we still in heavy pursuit or have we silently (and with class unlike KM) taken the same position as LSU on the matter? I'm not privy to anything other than what appears in the media, but Vic's comment about Brianna Preston seemed rather pointed to me. Again, pure speculation on my part.

Exactly the tone I got. For sure highly speculative thought. Absent of any “real” information, clues or tidbits of information is all we’ve got. Feel like the 16 year old guy I once was trying to figure out what Betty Sue was thinking.

If the Chavez Camp's main objective is shopping for $$$$, then I don't see Vic playing that game. Not only does it scream "ME, ME, ME!" but it's also a huge distraction from the utmost important team goals, and that definitely affects team chemistry.

Notice that you never see any of our players talking about the value of their NIL endorsements like the players from LSU and other programs have done. Vic is teaching them a valuable and classy life lesson... ain't nobody's business how much money you make.

Elena and Blair have continued to post stories on their Instagram accounts which show video clips of Chavez; last time I saw that was maybe 1-2 weeks ago. But, definitely about 2 weeks after her official visit to Texas in late September.

As for Vic's comments about Preston, I'm glad he's pleased with her practice so far. He used to gush about Latasha Lattimore, too

Both Gonzales and Phelia commented about NIL opportunities, and how that played a huge role in them electing to transfer to Texas. I don't know if certain players across the country divulge specific dollar amounts or not, but that's because I haven't paid too much attention.

Lattimore's potential was worth gushing over. Unfortunately she wasn't willing to make a long-term commitment that would allow a program to develop her. I could be mistaken, but I believe she transferred out of Miami also after leaving Texas for there.

Honestly, her first and only season at Texas, I saw her height, speed, and raw athleticism. Did I ever see her make a play that was worth gushing over? I don't think so.

Yeah, not sure she has much individual success her 2 or 3 years at Miami, but she was injured a lot. Believe she is now at Virginia.

Exactly... potential. I remember one, maybe two plays she made that made me think, "Wow, just wait until she matures some." Apparently that has never happened. The whole "Hollywood Swinging" socal media persona seemed more important. I believe you are correct about her now being at Virginia.
