2025 Recruiting - WBB

In reviewing the 2025 Recruiting list on ESPNW, TTECH has zero of the top 100. Ninety eight of the players have committed. I’m too lazy to check who they bave committed from high school but it’s gonna be ordinary. So Chavez doesn’t have any good new players to team with. Current roster is young with only one senior. So unless Chavez committing to Tech would bring in a tremendous haul of portal transfers, a freshman year could be disheartening. I’m not sure what Gerlich is selling, but it could rival a snake oil salesman. I’m betting rational heads will prevail in her family.

Money talks...

Chavez and the Lubbock Monterrey team play their Regional Final against Argyle today at 1:00pm at Abilene Christian. Not sure if that’s good timing for the coaching staff to attend but if I lived in Abilene I’d be checking that game out in person.

Argyle is really good with its team defense. They don’t have that one athletic defensive stopper so will have to help. South Grsnd Prairie did and held Chavez to 14 points early in season. Should be a good game.

So Tech coach Tuesday. Texas coach Friday. Where’s other contenders’ coaches. I’m desperate for clues.

Even though South Carolina continues to be mentioned in most tweets/writeups, Chavez has yet to take an unofficial or official visit to Columbia, SC. While I don't think they're in contention, anything is possible. So, no surprise to me that Dawn has been reported as attending any of her games in person this season.

That leaves just OU as a school where she did visit officially. Have also not seen any reports of Jennie Baranczyk attending any of Aaliyayh's games in person which is odd as Norman isn't that far from Lubbock.

And the LSU thingy has been on/off/on/off infinitum …but don’t remember any Witch sitings at Chavez’s games recently. Sure can’t hurt to see the Schaefers out today. And visiting with Monterey coach. Texas vs TTech finals? I’m picking HORNS!

Bottom line is that our coaching staff is still pursuing Chavez hard; they wouldn't be there in person today if they had given up hope or if Texas had been eliminated from consideration. Seems like we will be going after her until the end.

When Texas announced Vic's three year extension, I was happy but I thought the timing was odd. To my memory, extension announcements are typically made at the end of the season. Then, I remembered this quote from Chavez in an On3 article published in July 2024.

“The most important thing is to make sure I’m in a place where I have high energy,” Chavez told On3. “I don’t want a coach that’s low energy, and I need to make sure that they’re going to be there the whole time [I am]. I don’t want a coach that’s just going to be there for two years… I want them to be there all four years. Because that’s what I’m getting recruited off of, right? I want to be there all four years.”

If Chavez stays in college for four years, she will graduate in 2030. Vic's new contract extension takes him to the 2029-2030 season. :e-thinking: I want to believe it's not a coincidence.

I do agree with you that the announced timing during the season of a contract extension is odd as those are typically announced during the offseason. That can't hurt our chances with Chavez, but she wouldn't even be considering Texas Tech if a head coach's stability was a factor. Sometimes her quotes don't apply to all her finalists for whatever reason.

By my count, Chavez's fourth season in college would finish after 2028-29. Still, locking up Vic through 2030 has a ton of benefits to the program.

I too thought the same thing about the timing. On a bigger scale, Schaefer turns 64 on March 1. By taking off my shoes and counting toes…..he would be 69 when the contract expires. His intensity makes me wonder sometimes if his blood pressure is off the top of scale. At yesterday’s media availability there was a question about his coaching style this year….more calm, less volatility. He answered it by saying that with an experienced senior class, he trusts what he is going to get. So I think that leads to less continuous intensity from him. Perhaps that’ll help his health and allow him to coach well into his 70s. Regardless, 5+ years might be good for CDC to have a list in his pocket.

So what’s the plan? Certainly you have a plan? Chavez is certainly not the typical player…..and absolutely women’s basketball is changing right before our eyes (almost daily). So the recent historical use of unofficial visits, official visit, following Instagram/X/etc. , home visits, weekly phone calls/texts, calls with her high school coach, visits at high school, stops to watch playoff games, and other. Not good enough today for #1 recruit. What additional unique things can a staff do to persuade Chavez to commit to your school? MY PLAN is the following: 1. Find a BMD to fund NIL to overwhelm 2. Have Governor Abbott declare Chavez Day in Texas if she’ll chose Texas. 3. Have Kevin Durant call her and explain the advantages of playing at Texas. 4. Fund and name a faculty chair at McCombs after her family. 5. Have Chavez play the daughter of our Minister of Culture in his next Rom-Com movie. 6. Commit to Chavez being interim President of Texas for a year. 7. Deliver a
