2024 Recruiting - WBB

With Rori’s injury and the anticipated amount of time before she returns to 100%, I thought Vic & Co would need a point guard for the start of next season to back up Rori. Well, my wishes came true… I’ve always liked Kaitlyn Chen, the PG from Princeton. Per Raoul Tweet, she has entered her name into the portal as a grad transfer for next year. I think she would fit what Vic likes in a PG. she’s tough, has speed, takes care of the basketball, great passer, can get the tim and shoot the three. What yall think? I think that helps us with Rori’s return and provides depth at the PG spot that we have not had in years. With that, I like our chances with landing Chavez in 2025!

We would be lucky to have her. Not sure the feeling would be mutual because of the unique situation Texas could find itself next year. She could view our roster as playing behind two accomplished point guards, Madi and Rori.

But you raise a good point. With Shaylee's departure, an experienced portal guard would be needed to replace her. There's still time for Maul or Codio to develop into that role, but we haven't seen it yet.

Remember we have a freshman point guard that was recruited to back up Harmon in her senior year. Wouldn’t immediately provide the experience but a good bridge to Chavez. I doubt Schaefer adds another point guard unless he sees Harmon’s recovery not progressing or Chavez going somewhere else. I liked Chen when watching her last year.

Both freshman guards coming in next year are GOOD... but they will be freshmen and only one is a PG. It should be interesting to see what transpires over the spring and summer months.

Madi would go back to her true position. Chen’s veteran presence will be helpful!

Bry is more of a 2 guard. I don’t think but recruited her to play point. She will fit more of the 2 guard role of Jordan danberry & Ro Johnson from his Ms State days.. quick defenders for the perimeter and guards he can get to the rim.

Yeah, I think Preston was recruited as a combo guard. Hoopgurlz has her listed as PG but combo seems to be a better fit for her.

You don’t do this if you aren’t hustling your tail off…

Speculation, more than anything, but Texas could hit the jackpot (again) with Jordan Lee for the 3rd time in recent memory. She's that good and has the defensive chops to break into Vic's scheme early. She could be the heir-apparent to Shaylee (fingers crossed).

How often does a true freshman significantly improve your team? It is very rare, but we hit the jackpot with Madi this year and Rori three years ago.

When was the last time? I submit that you have to go back to 2014 to Brook McCarty. I certainly considered Ariel Atkins in that same year, but Ariel was hobbled with injuries and blossomed later. Joyner Holmes and Sug Sutton in 2016 could be considered, but not to the same degree as Madi and Rori (opinion only).

Charli (no), Audry (no), JoAnne (no). Like most mortals, they all needed seasoning.

For sure. Not every highly-ranked will be a difference-maker their true freshman season. Maybe Celeste Taylor fits your criteria?

Kaitlyn Chen will have many suitors for next season but I will be surprised if Texas seriously pursues her. Vic loves this current team, most of whom will be back, and has three skilled, talented players coming in. I don’t think Vic sees a big enough hole in the roster (even if some fans do) to justify taking a one year player. I think Vic took Herron this year for a few reasons: she had 4 years of eligibility left; talented true posts are in very short supply for the next couple of recruiting cycles; and Herron was willing to develop behind the current roster players.

I don't disagree with anything you said, but I have seen Chen play and would not be disappointed if she were to play at Texas next year.

Reluctantly, she does; good point. I'm reluctant to agree only because she portaled out. But Coach valued her play, which is the best test of someone's value.

Don't sleep on this young lady. I can't wait to have her join the team. She can make a difference her freshman year.

Jordan Lee named to Naismith Trophy Girl’s High School Player of the Year Midseason Team

"Lee won back-to-back 1600-meter and 800-meter state championships on the track." I think she'll be ready to give Shay a run for fastest player.

She would be running 100 and 200 if she had real speed

Seriously? You don't think the California State Champion in the 800 can't run faster than 99% of women college basketball players in a sprint?
Exactly. I've watched her on video and she is very fast up and down the floor.

I agree with your points. The argument I make is that Shay has 200 and 400 meter speed
I don't know argue about Shay's speed and athleticism... love it! On-ball defending and attacking off the bounce offensively requires a completely different type of foot quickness, and great track speed and it aren't necessarily mutually inclusive of one another. According to the evaluations on Jordan Lee, she can guard any spot on the floor and do it well. Apparently she possesses the type of quickness and explosiveness that will translate well.

It’s about having a higher percentage of fast twitch muscles..the more the quicker and faster. It’s the reason you’re seeing the comeback of 5’ 10” receivers in the NFL…uncoverable in their initial quickness by larger defenders

MaxPreps article:

High school girls basketball: Jaloni Cambridge, Joyce Edwards headline 2024 McDonald's All American Game selections

The McDonald's All America Game returns to Houston for the second straight year as the best high school girls basketball players from around the country meet April 2 for the 47th annual event. On Tuesday, the 24-player roster was announced.

Eight players on the MaxPreps Preseason All-America Team made the roster, including first-teamers Jaloni Cambridge of Montverde Academy (Montverde, Fla.), Joyce Edwards of Camden (S.C.) and Kennedy Smith of Etiwanda (Calif.).

Three players from No. 2 Long Island Lutheran (Brookville, N.Y.) were selected – Kayleigh Heckel, Kate Koval and Syla Swords.

No. 5 Sidwell Friends (Washington, D.C.) was the only other school with multiple selections as UCLA commit Kendall Dudley and Zania Socka earned the nod.

Sarah Strong of Grace Christian (Sanford, N.C.) and Mackenly Randolph of Sierra Canyon (Chatsworth, Calif.) are the only uncommitted McDonald's All Americans.

USC has three commits on the McDonald's roster with Smith, Heckel and Avery Howell of Boise (Idaho). UCLA, UConn, Florida, Michigan and Texas each have two players headed to Houston.

Fran Burbridge of Westtown (West Chester, Pa.) will coach the East while Ann Fritz of Blue Valley North (Overland Park, Kan.) is the West coach.

The 2024 McDonald's All American girls game airs on ESPN2 at 6:30 p.m. ET on April 2 with the boys game following at 9 p.m. Both will be played at the Toyota Center in Houston.

Vic escorting Justice Carlton has to be one of the most special things I've ever seen a head coach do for one of their signees.
Thanks for finding and posting this. This film is the best I've seen during the post-surgery era of Justice's career. It's pretty clear that she has regained her mobility, even with the brace. If things continue to go well for her, she can be an important contributor as a freshman next season.

Who does she remind? A more mobile version of Amo, with maybe a touch less brawn, but with 3-pt range and a better handle.

Carlton's perimeter shooting is what excites me. While she can play inside (where we seem to be loaded at PF), getting another player who can consistently shoot those mid-range jumpers like Booker can be such an advantage, especially against a zone defense.
