World series

I remember baseball as far back as 61, but 1964 was the first time I was old enough to follow a pennant race. I remember my older brother and more knowledgeable types than me talking about how Gene Mauch was going to kill the Phillies big lead the way he (mis)handled the staff. Epic meltdown. The pitchers he needed the most ran on fumes at the end.

I don't think that happens here, the Rangers have too much fire power and are on a roll. Also AZ seems to want to give us games via mental breakdowns and errors.

With the 64 phils, and the way koufax and Drysdale were used and abused until the arms were toast , I've always had a different view on pitching and over use. Hoping it doesn't bite us now or next year. This team is special. 51 years / 52 seasons and it's thiiiis close. The fan base is deserving

Gene Mauch: '64 Phillies' tragic figure

That's a great article. Obviously I wasn't around in '64, but I remember the '86 meltdown by the Angels. It sounds like the Phils had some of the same issues as the Angels did. At the time, I enjoyed seeing them flop because of the rivalry with the Rangers, but I'm sure it's tough on the players to be a part of that. Obviously Donnie Moore couldn't handle it.

Donnie Moore. Sad story. Lubbock tx guy

Very sad, and I think it's sad that Moore was a very solid relief pitcher for several years but is remembered most for one bad pitch. Tragic. Ditto for Bill Buckner that same year. Great hitter - an almost Hall of Famer, but he's most famous for screwing up that weak ground ball.
