UT, OU, and SEC?

TCU's problem is their Media appeal, same with Baylor. With the two, you get Ft Worth and Waco, little else. That is why TCU was not initially in the Big 12. Baylor was because Ann Richards was the Gov. Texas Tech has a bigger fan base than either TCU or Baylor.
TCU's problem may be media appeal. Baylor's problem runs a lot deeper than that.

Interesting.

I hope the PAC picks up Tech and TCU, and OSU for that matter (although they weren’t reported to be in these discussions).

Despite their recent success on the basketball court, I have a difficult time seeing Baylor getting an invite from the PAC. But stranger things have happened.

I wish the best for all the Big12 teams but I don’t see how the addition of those teams enhances that league, the Pac 12. It’s sort of sad. Seems like dilution to me.

I dunno.
My take on it:

1. Sports performance.

Tech and TCU overall have outperformed the likes of Wash State (post Leach), Oregon State, U of Arizona, Arizona State, and Berkeley in recent years in football, basketball, and baseball (taken as a whole). I would think their other programs are more or less up to par (and the PAC is the one conference that cares a lot about the ‘other sporta’).

2. Media.

Tech is the #3 draw in Texas, with an expanding student body (around 40,000 or so) and alumni base. TCU’s fan base seems to be more Ft Worth (and surrounding area) specific. Neither can deliver the Texas tv market in the way UT can, but aTm can’t either and the SEC was happy to take them.

3. Recruiting.

Here’s what they want most of all. A recruiting footprint in Texas. This is also why TCU likely gets the invite along with Tech (the more valuable program). TCU is in the DFW Metroplex. USC would love to play in DFW every other year. So would UCLA and the Arizona schools.

4. Positioning for the new era of Super Conferences.

The PAC needs to expand to compete in the new era of Super Conferences. Moving East, Tech, TCU, and OSU are the top remaining dogs aside from BYU. Oh yeah, and Boise State.

One thing people seem to overlook is the travel, and what that is like now. I know what it's like as much as I travel, as I know HIC knows. It's much worse than the worst traffic in the worst city, and you have to deal with that just to get to the airport. It may not be that big of a deal for FB, only 6-7 trips/season, but what about the teams that play 30-40 games/matches a season? And it may not be too difficult for TCU, being close enough to a major hub. But traveling in/out of Stillwater is already ridiculous. Lubbock too. And they are supposed to be students. The more and more time out of the classroom, the less they are students.

If they're all able to get in the Pac12, and form a west division with CU, then maybe that will work fine. But OSU alone without Baylor, Tech, TCU, KSU would seem crazy too me. And as many have pointed out, the PAC12 isn't taking Baylor and TCU.

There is nothing so satisfying as seeing Aggy ONCE AGAIN being reminded that their standing in life is light years away from their delusions.

And PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE to all Longhorn fans; do no shout SEC SEC SEC EVER EVER EVER.

That is what Aggy does.

See my thread in the "In The Stands" Forum. It is now time for Texas fans to assimilate. Texas fans will become SEC!SEC!SEC! fans.

Understand also that SEC membership will bring the stupidest Texas t-shirt fans out of the woodwork but hey it's all good because $$$$
I say we should make friends with Vanderbilt fans just to try and preserve some impression of actual academic integrity in this thing

Need to screw them over like we did to Nebraska

FWIW
It is a fools errand to criticize someone's opinion (or hypocrisy) for views held in a past time. Things have changed dramatically since the days of 3 football games on Saturday and limited TV exposure per year. But technology has changed dramatically and the NIL ( and Covid's boost to streaming) has changed the landscape. If Texas and Oklahoma join the SEC, all SEC teams will remain relevant mid term. However, the remaining conferences will have to make proactive decisions regarding the future. Some will make additions (and Subtractions). If the BIG 12 can't get a contract extension w OU and Texas, well, there will be no big 12 contract even with Baylor and the addition of Houston and Cincinnati.

When all is done, there will be less than 64 relevant D1 teams. Conferences will be nostalgic names for pods or divisions, not stand alone entities. Ultimately there will be one CF contract made of teams that can compete based on the NEW rules of NIL and changing technology. It will be radical, painful and transforming. Some (or many) may not like the final product, but it seems unlikely that there are more than 40 teams that can recruit with the NIL i.e. have money and a product to sell in place.
Any attempt to limit the NIL is probably a significant anti trust issue.
And, assuming they have the access to NIL funds, will Kansas and Kentucky and Duke, Illinois, Louisville, Pitt, etc play football when they can put their alumni/eggs in basketball or other sports?

40 teams is probably too many. Basketball relevance/manageability, will kill most of the ACC and Big if choices are made. The Pac is already on life support.

And PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE to all Longhorn fans; do no shout SEC SEC SEC EVER EVER EVER.
The only way I could see that being appropriate for UT fans to do is in the following scenario:

1) We join the SEC (pretty much a given at this point)
2) aggy exits the SEC (I wish it would happen but the reality is this is highly unlikely)
3) We play aggy after their exit from the SEC, kick their scrawny maroon asses, and then, just to rub salt in the would, we chant SEC! along with Pooooooooooooor aggy!

Your other points are jus

Media appeal is the only factor. How many additional viewers can a school add To the conference TV package.

Anybody else think bolting is a bad idea?

aside from annoying some Aggies and putting ourselves even more at the mercy/whim of ESPN and its Mickey Rat owner?

why not concentrate on becoming the Rice of public universities?

On lthe other hand we can always dream of hiring the next Saban and having brain dead sports announcers drooling over us until our time in the turnstile is up again and we wander in wannabe land for 35 years yearning for another NC.
It’s already been 16 years so we should be up soon

can you spell Arkansas? Nebraska?

As I mentioned in an earlier post or two, I’d rather we just stay put—mainly because I think we’d be more likely to make the playoffs in the Big 12.

But now it’s obvious sticking around the Big 12 ain’t happening. Gotta roll with the changes. We’ll be fine in our new league. Perhaps the advantages will outweigh the disadvantages. If the college football world (now known as the semi-pro league) is moving towards just having a few super conferences, we’d have to join one mega-league or another soon enough. I can embrace it. We’ll do well.

Anybody else think bolting is a bad idea?

None of us knows what the wild card is or was going to do. If Dr Boren was still in charge in Norman, I would be opposed to the idea, but unless "Bubba" can enlighten us, it could be that OU would bolt and take oSu with them. Would the SEC have done that? Maybe, probably not. Too many variables and unknowns to have an educated opinion. Except for the $$$, I would have opposed the deal on the surface.

Considerations:

1) If not us, would the SEC have grabbed Clemson & FSU in spite of the agreement with South Carolina & Florida?

2) Will the BigTen go back to Delany's original plan to grab UNC & UVA?

3) Would USC have seriously come into play?

4) Could we have gotten Oliver Luck or Dr Boren to be Big XII commissioner?

TCU and USC actually have a fair amount in common as well.

Speaking of USC, here is one of my favorite Charles Addams cartoons -

My dad (who was from the Midwest) worked as an asst. professor at USC in the 1950s while working on his doctorate there. We moved to Texas a few years after he got his D.Ed.
