Transfer Portal 2024

ESPN's Top 10 Players in the Portal:
  1. Grad PG Kaitlyn Chen, Princeton
  2. Sr. F Ajae Petty, Kentucky
  3. Fr. G Taliah Scott, Arkansas
    • With 29 and 25 points in her first two college games, Scott was in the same conversation as JuJu Watkins, Hannah Hidalgo, MiLaysia Fulwiley and Madison Booker. The scoring remained (22.1 PPG), but the efficiency dipped and the turnovers rose. Injuries cost Scott some games in January, and then she ended her season in mid-February, citing family reasons before leaving the program altogether.
  4. So. G Saylor Poffenbarger, Arkansas
    • Like Scott, Poffenbarger entered the portal last Monday, the day it opened. The SEC's second-leading rounder (behind Angel Reese) at 11.2 RPG and the nation's second-leading defensive rebounder (9.4), she will be moving to her third school (she played 12 games at UConn in 2021). Her offensive production faded at the end of the season (7.0 PPG in the last eight games), but Poffenbarger is also a solid defender who has two more years of eligibility.
  5. Sr. G Maddie Scherr, Kentucky
  6. Sr. G Eniya Russell, Kentucky
  7. Sr. PG Mama Dembele, Missouri
    • Dembele's first three years at Missouri produced little, but scoring (10.2 PPG) and assists (6.5 APG) more than doubled this season. Her assists and steals (3.3 SPG) were each good for sixth in the country, and Dembele made the SEC all-defensive team. Her outside shooting has improved but is still a hole in Dembele's game. She will need to take better care of the ball at her next stop (3.4 turnovers per game).
  8. So. G Kailyn Gilbert, Arizona
  9. Jr. G Izzy Higginbottom, Arkansas State --> Committed to Arkansas
  10. Sr. G Terren Ward, Georgia Southern
2024-25 transfer rankings: The top 10 names in the portal right now

To our hornfans coaching committee members, in particular . . . do you think Kaitlyn Chen would ever consider transferring to Texas, and do you think she’d be a good fit? She’s a premed major. I think she would be an intriguing option.

I would be happy to see her transfer to Texas.

Would love to see Chen in burnt orange but I'd say the chances are between slim and none and Slim seems to be sidling toward the door. She's going to have a lot of programs in desperate need of a full time, seasoned PG coming after her and I just don't see her passing that up to take a back seat to Rori.

That being said, I would gladly tuck a napkin into my collar and chow down on some crow should she end up in Austin.

Agree and disagree.
Agree that the chances of her coming to Texas are most likely non-existent. I think she goes to UConn. There's a connection already as her coach Carla Barube played for Geno.
Disagree that, if by some chance she did come to Texas, she'd take a back seat. Although she may primarily play PG at Princeton she's got combo guard skills and athleticism that would translate to our style. Given that we don't know if/when Rori will be ready at 100% of her old self, Chen would be especially valuable to us.

But Vic doesn’t like to recruit over players, as KM does. But if Chen is pre-med, she might be interested in being here and in a reduced role, all for proximity to Dell Medical School.

Right.
Again, I think our speculation is just that... I bet she goes to UConn.

I've never really understood what folks mean by "recruit over players"; perhaps it means different things to different players. And, since we're in the Transfer Portal thread, I'm assuming it's about incoming transfers and not high school recruits.

At one point Vic said he was not in favor of bringing in transfers if it impacted the development of (young) players on his roster. That all changed after Latasha Lattimore transferred after one season at Texas; Vic's eyes were opened as to young players who were discontent with not being starters or being utilized as they thought was best, and they had no problem moving on to what they believed were greener pastures. "Waiting your turn" was not applicable to all young players. Vic says he understands that if he brings in an impact transfer that it might cause the departure of returning players; that's how it is now.

So, that offseason, Vic brought in upperclassmen transfers Shaylee Gonzales and Sonya Morris at the guard/wing positions. Were those additions considered "recruiting over players" players like Kyndall Hunter, Ndjakalenga, Holle, Codio, etc. ? Morris and Gonzales were instant starters, so that definitely took away minutes on the court from those players. He also brought in Richea Jackson for a visit. This past offseason he brought in Chandler Prater for a visit.

To me, the head coach needs to do what is necessary to improve their roster. every season. Coaches who don't win don't keep their jobs. I agree with Vic's modified philosophy now; not sure how it's different than most other elite head coaches across the country, including Mulkey.

Every coach does. They better or they are being derelict at their job.

Would love to land a tall forward who can shoot the 3-pointer efficiently; but, we are just loaded at the forward spots.

I read an article this morning about the big unknown as to what happens to Oregon St after their season ends since they will be in a non-power 5 conference (WCC) next year. Mass exodus or no?

I think you can play her at the three coming off the bench. Because she’s a really good three point shooter they we could use.

At this point we have limited roster availability with other critical needs to fill with the vacancy we have. We'll see if we have any attrition now that the season has ended.

I could see transfers from Jak, Sarah and maybe Codio or Maul. One thing to note about Vic, referencing back to his Ms State days, he will make room on his roster if he sees that he can get an addition that could have a bigger impact.
I just don’t see Jak fitting this system on either side of the ball.

I really like Jak’s length and think she’d be a great fit for a team that plays zone a lot. She always seems most comfortable on the defensive end of the floor on the few occasions Texas was in zone with her at the top of the key.

I agree… her length is great for a zone.

Sarah G. is not transferring out. She was a walkon, who may have only gotten a 1-year scholarship from Vic. She doesn't have enough "tape" to show any program that could offer a scholarship. Her stats for 2023-2024:

Games Played: 2
Minutes Played: 9:15
Shots Taken: 3

Seriously?

Jak just hasn’t progressed her game as one would expect from a freshman to a soph. Amina was playing lights out at the first of the season in comparison. Jak averaged 19 points (and 9 rebounds) per game in her senior year in high school so she is certainly capable. I do hope she will remain at Texas and use the summer to further develop her skills. She should be feeling the heat to do just that given the recruits that will be joining the team next season.

PG Talaysia Cooper, class of 2022, has bad timing. Goes to South Carolina out of high school 1-year after their ridiculous 2021 class. She misses the portal but transfers to Tennessee anyway and has to sit the 2023-2024 season only to see the coach she transferred to get canned.

Well, yes. You are not allowed to contact players before they enter the portal. And I expect our staff to follow the rules. I was simply wondering if following the rules is giving Texas a late start on recruiting some portal players. Sour grapes I guess. Mulkey already had a top recruit out of the portal in about 48 hours max after the portal opened.

If you think Mulkey plays by the rules, go ask Pokey Chatman about the beef over Griner and the bru-ha-ha that ensued…Mulkey could give a damn about “rules shmooooles”….:puke:
