Texas Georgia game thread #2. This time it's serious.

My only negative comment was how in the heck did no one see the guy in motion on that 4th down punt fake? I saw it and told wife “it’s a fake” but not a single defender moved. That was the game imo.

All the favorable bounces of the ball that Texas got over the last few weeks of the season went Georgia’s way tonight. Mukaba almost had an int that could have gone for a pick 6 or close to it but it just got deflected out of his hands. Two dawg fumbles bounced their way, pass deflected just didn’t reach Broughton. The fumble where Beck was hurt almost picked in the air by Simmons but hit another Horn defender. If Simmons gets it cleanly he most probably wouldn’t have been caught from behind.

All in all a very close game. Three fumbles we caused but couldn't recover. The fake punt. A huge momentum shift right there. Did we not consider this as a possibility? Pre-snap penalties. Two missed field goals. We have been grinding out victories against teams who were not good enough to capitalize on our mistakes. Georgia is Georgia. Kirby is a NC coach. Maybe the refs were one-sided but I can't blame that. We had it in our hands. To me, they are physically more dominant than we are. When they dialed it up, we struggled.

I believe Sark made the deal with the two QB's and their families, that barring obvious ability issues, he was giving this season to Quinn. I don't know that Arch is better than Quinn at the moment. Especially against that pass rush. The bigger question to me is our offensive line against Georgia. Is there another team that good up front? I don't know. If not, then we might win a couple of playoff games.

I'm trying to avoid the national championship or bust my emotions state of mind. We beat aggy. At Kyle. Last week. This could have been described as a trap game. It's been a fun year, recruiting was top shelf and there's more to come.

Hook 'em, from a bystander wearing a Longhorn t-shirt.

They got a fake punt, and fumbled twice on their final go ahead drive in regulation. Sometimes the ball bounces your way.

We could have done some things better, but we were in it at the end. We were just 1 big play short.

Sark outcoached
Maybe, but he had lots of help. If you watched the game, you know you saw history in the making. This was the first time in the history of football that Mike Bobo outcoached anyone.

So many "what-ifs" and "shoulda-beens", but the last question is - with a gimp QB, who cannot run, has limited lateral movement, and cannot throw, why the hell are the safeties & LBs standing on the goal line? Sure they reacted, but it was too late.

Hard to beat a National Championship contender with only one OL.

As for the officiating; it sucked bigtime and I expected better than that from Steve, but his crew is subpar for a Walt Anderson group. We'll discuss that over lunch when I calm down. He's an Alabama boy, born and raised.

Sark is going to get us there, but his play selection is tough to stomach some times. All those crazy throws at the end and slow developing pass plays with multiple misdirections against a defense like this is goofy. The forced runs were not producing anything. It was said earlier in the thread and it bears repeating. If you watch Georgia Defensive game threads you can see that they become rather pedestrian when faced with a running/dual threat qb. The sad thing is that the film dictates that and Sark had to know that and was avoiding it for whatever reason. This is coaching malpractice IMO. Hopefully he will get better in these situations in the future. Being stubborn is not an asset in a HC.

Bond really hurt us today with the holds and tips. He isn't right and that injury must be lingering.

When GA sends out a back-up punter you should be ready for a fake in that situation. Especially when we are setting up a return.

Kicker has not been good this year. Sark needs to spend some portal dollars.

This may not be a terrible thing as two weeks off is better than three at this point in the season. I expect a bye team hangover in the second round.

Why can't we get a good punter. Ours cant kick the ball 40 yards. On the season he averages 40.9 yds per punt which puts him 109th out of 125 D1 punters and last in the SEC. Effing pathetic.

Hoff,

I've been posting and begging for weeks to have kicker tryouts, both punt & FG. Don't we have a soccer team? Whether varsity or club, let's go raid it.

In the mid 90s, UVA had a great defense (I think 4-5 players drafted in first three rounds), but no kicker. Someone I know really well went to McCue Center & told Coach Welsh & Lantz that UVA's soccer team had won two National Championships, send somebody to their practice and bring back a kicker. I think his name was Garcia, but he did beat Mack Brown & Greg Davis.

I'm 69 years old. My first memory of a Texas choke was 1961 vs TCU. I think we were 28 point favorites and lost 6-0 which cost us the National Championship.

Now here I am 63 years later and I'm wondering how many UT games I've seen where I really thought we should have won but didn't. And how many times have we actually come through in the biggest moment? In my mind, only 3 times. 1963 vs Navy; 1969 vs Ark and ND; and 2005 vs USC. I know I'm being kind of harsh. Because the Horns have brought me lots of great times. But why do I always enter into these big games expecting us to find a way to lose? And unfortunately, we usually do.

I know there were games where we weren't expected to win, but did. So I know we aren't a bunch of chokers. But in these big moments of national importance my sense is that we don't usually come through.

Sark is wound too tight for these games. A home CFP game would do him good. Need a team that is both good and cocky. Hard to find.
