HIC- Surely you can't think the term Redneck has the same social weight as the 'N' word. I am not sure I have ever considered Redneck as derogatory. Is Hick, Hillbilly, RedDirt, Country Bumpkin- all derogatory?
I didn't say it was AS derogatory. Any derogatory term either way encompassing both situations. Would it ever be acceptable to use a derogatory term to describe any person who isn't white?

Redneck is not the equivalent. If a guy is riding around in the back of a pickup truck with a shotgun in the middle of the day for "justice" then, yeah, redneck.
So what is the equivalent term, and would it ever be used and acceptable to use? What about in the case that 6721 posted? A black guy guns down 2 old white people. What term is acceptable and equal to redneck for that POS?

Yes, it was. But people thrust unexpectedly into potentially lethal confrontations tend to make dumb, panicky decisions as flight/fight/freeze kicks in. Quite possibly he figured his odds were better defending himself than they were running away and possibly just getting shot in the back anyway.

2/23 Arbery is killed. His mother Cooper-Jones is notified by police that he was shot and killed inside a home during the commission of a burglary.
2/27 Brunswick DA Jackie Johnson writes letter revising herself. She knows George McM. Cooper-Jones sees reports about her sons death conflicting what she had been told on 2/23 and requests that Georgia’s AG Carr assign the case to another office.
2/29: Arbery funeral.
March to April: case is now referred to Waycross DAs office George E Barnhill who also knows George McM.
Barnhill eventually writes 3 page letter recusing himself and says there is not enough probable cause to arrest George McM or Travis. Mentions a 3rd man Willliam Bryan has video and was part of the “hot pursuit of a burglary suspect.”
4/13: AG Carr assigns Atlantic Judicial Circuit DA Tom Durden who claims he does not know George nor Travis McM.
4/28: NCAAP and other groups become heavily involved.
5/5: DA Durden says case should go to the Grand Jury but of COVID courts won’t be open until 6/12. The video Bryan took is released and goes viral. Durden then requests the GBI become involved to investigate the following: Arbery’s Murder, who leaked the video and threats made against Glynn County PD.
5/6: GBI gets involved. It is also mentioned that Georgia has NO hate crime laws.
5/7: GBI arrests McMs for felony murder and aggravated assault.
5/10: AG Carr requests assistance from DOJ.

I agree it's not fair to label the accused as rednecks. It's a term I've applied to myself when I earned college money stacking hay bales and to me by both women who married me when my country boy roots showed. But in a life or death criminal case like this we need to set aside playful language use and let the.process apply facts and law. We don't know the whole story and some stuff accepted as fact now.may turn up less factual. at trial.

On first glance I thought the fellow in the pu bed did the shooting. Now I read the fellow on the ground with the shotgun did. What gauge and what kind? Pump or semi auto? And why three shots? With any gauge shotgun one will usually suffice. And if one guy on the ground did the shooting, is it not a bit of over reach to prosecute the guy in the bed for murder?

The 2 guys that did the shooting saved countless other people from getting burglarized, robbed or much worse.. Who gives a sheet.
And I like how the news media shows a 25 year olds high school yearbook picture vs a recent mugshot. And a lot of people fall hook, line and sinker for it.
