There's a point where sports aren't about the money at the big D-I schools. That point is typically where men's basketball ends and every other sport begins. You can't be angry about it... it just "is."

Unfortunately, for basically anyone who's not on that "big D-I schools" list, football is usually also operating in the red.

We had that thread earlier about which nonrev sports you'd like to see added at Texas, but consider this list and that we'd basically be taking away $3MM if we added a gymnastics team. Where else could that $3MM go? Better lockers, equipment, shoes for the track team, which also loses money.

Yup, never heard that message.

IMHO that was the exact kind & length of message for THAT team at THAT time.

1. He congratulated them and let them know how much everyone around them appreciated what they did to get there.
2. He reminded them this game was about them, the TEAM.
3. He purposely shifted to something totally unrelated to the moment to get them to LAUGH and relax, a little.
4. Told them to be themselves, don't do too much and GO WIN THE NC !!!

And damn did they!!!:hookem: :yippee:

Methinks Matt Nordgren probably couldn't have beat out most of the other QBs in the conference, but maybe as a 2nd team unit he'd have a chance. RB would have been Selvin Young when Charles was healthy. Receivers would be Cosby and lots of alternating between Brian Carter and Nate Jones. OL would have been a little tough to put together. Tackles would have been Tony Hills and Will Winston. Guard/C might be trickier. I know Mike Garcia played a lot. Tweedie as TE. Might have needed to take some dudes off the practice squad or burn redshirts. If Shipley had been healthy, he probably would have played in 2005. Ulatoski too.

Defense would still have been relatively stout. We'd probably have to burn a few shirts.
DL: Eric Hall, Derek Lokey, Marco Martin, Orakpo
LB: Scott Derry, Drew Kelson (nominally as a backup because he played a ton), and either Eric Foreman before he was booted or burn Muckelroy's shirt
DB: Basically our crew from 2007. I'm not going to include A. Ross because we basically played nickel most of the season. Brandon Foster, Marcus Griffin, Matt Melton, Ryan Palmer, Erick Jackson as the nickel/S.

Everybody forgets Billy Pittman.
Dude was outstanding.

I don't know if this will stir controversy or not, but, rewatching the game and reflecting on that team and era for us....anyone who thinks Mack and the staff just rode good talent doesn't know football IMO. That was a well....a well...coached team.

Absolutely. Great post H2O

I'll just say this, the two most important plays in the game were made by the kids not by the coaches. Had the kids not been able to read their opponents, White would have gotten the first down and VY would have been stopped. If you want to give the coaches credit for that fine. Too many times I saw Mack Brown, at al out-coached but able to out-talent.

Sabre you and JF are my favorite guys here for different reasons. When either of you post I read it thoroughly.
But out coached on this night? No. Mack out coached everyone.
White was absolutely gassed. Beyond gassed. Had nothing left.
He fumbled into the arms of the wide receiver in one of unluckiest moments in recent history, 2nd to Darius hitting Colt.
SC called their only time out left and easily gave up the 2 point conversion.
Reminds me of Miracle when the Russian Coach didn’t know what to do when he got down. 8 seconds left in field goal range and you run around for 6?
They had the better roster by far. Look at the linebackers alone.
Pete Carroll got out coached in a big game. Not for the last time.
Mack Brown is a great Head Coach.

Thank you

Pete Carroll made some incredibly stupid calls that night, not the least of which was the defense on VY's last run. It appeared to be a zone blitz, but we were up high about the 35 on the West side. When I saw Selvyn take 93 inside, I was screaming "go, go run". That was a great play by Selvyn, and a really stupid call by Carroll.

When Akers was coaching, we owned th the fourth quarter. Against OU, you could see it in their eyes. I thought I saw the same thing in the Trojans' eyes; like "oh **** here he comes again"

Great insight. On the replay I looked left like who’s he throwing to? Both Dan Fouts and Keith Jackson said continually he likes to run right, how could they not at least have a spy?
Mack takes and deserves criticism. Not on this night.
Sabre you take criticism, but deserve none. Not on any night. Horns up!

Thanks.

I had the opportunity to have lunch with Carroll and a USC friend several months after the game. I have always maintained that 93 was the "spy", but Selvin took him inside opening the outside for VY. I asked Carroll if 93 was his spy, and he just smiled and took another bite of his lunch.

If you can see 93's face on the replay, his expression screams "oh ****"

Thanks.

This is why I encourage Texas fans to come here and give a few bucks a month.
Where else can we learn this kind of insight?
Thanks Sabre. You’re the best...

Believe you have the number wrong. #93 was a freshman OT named Indio Evans. Maybe # 58. Just watched the play 5 times. No #93.

Selvin Young looking very intentional taking the containment inside...play as described.....but it is #90 (Frostee Rucker who went on to have decent NFL career) getting caught biting with Selvin's move on the play....
Great having that pointed out Sabre and thanks for clarification IDE.

Just fyi
Thanks for your info. So what? Still got the number wrong. Which is interesting seeing as he made such a point of it.

Carrol made some stupid calls because of the talent on the field.
He went for it on 4th down because he knew he couldn't stop VY.
