Random Off-Season News

From my birth in 1960 through 1984 (UT Math BS and Law JD) when I left for 12 years to “see the world,” and then from 1996 to 2025, I have lived in Austin. These days, finding someone who would know of Rooster Andrews Sporting Goods is rare as a hen’s tooth. I moved out to Round Rock this year, and people who say they are Austinites have never heard of Tarrytown or Shoal Creek or Northwest Hills.

I can still remember Rooster Andrews being the “new” sporting goods store in town, but as for his football exploits, I had to rely on my father’s stories. Seems like they let him throw a pass at QB once for laughs (maybe a TD was the story?), but anyway, he was about 5’3” with red hair as I recall.

Good to hear of others who remember Austin of old.
I’d see Rooster and his brother, Bunny, at the Purnell Relays in Angleton every year. They served as starters. I wish I had known more about Rooster and Bunny and their time at Texas back then.

I think my favorite is Rooster challenging a competitive swimmer to a race. Somehow, they rigged up Rooster with a small outboard motor. Would loved to have witnessed that.
I still have my baseball glove purchased at the old Rooster store on the South end of the Drag.

Only having 13 seniors on scholarship only has meaning If the players behind them have no playing experience and are not talented
It actually might help in recruiting .
So what does it mean?

Seems all that helps recruiting is $$$. Thank you, NCAA. I've always said that people that work for the federal government do so because NO ONE else will hire them - they can't get a real job. Now, I'm convinced that people too stupid to work for the government, work for the NCAA.

Came in with unreal hype. Went 21-5 as a starter. Yea we all had crazy expectations but thanks for making us relevant again, Quinn.

I hope whoever drafts him has a good ophthalmologist on retainer. Fix his right eye and depth perception issues, and he will make an outstanding pro QB.

Why is ANYBODY still a fan of Jerry's pathetic franchise?

Because they are Americas Team!!! NOT and havent been in years and years except in the minds of Jerry's group. Sanders would be a horrible hire for many reasons but his ego and that of Jones would be more than I could stand. I watch them some but have lost my appeal. It's all about his powere and his money.....his cameo apperance on 'Landman', a joke!!

It's because I was born and raised into it, and the owner is a tiny, miniscule piece of a lifelong team fan. His ineptitude frustrates me, but I'm a Cowboys fan.

I grew up in Lake Highlands. Old Cowboys were my neighbors right there by the practice field. Even in the 2010-2019 years I was having coffee with some of the old 60s-early 70s guys. And found out Roger and I got our haircuts at the same place one day when he walks in and sits down across from me. Everyone stops and I start a story from an old lineman of his that he'd told me JUST THAT MORNING. Hey, Roger, I just had coffee with ____________ this morning and he was saying____________... and I don't even get to tell it because Roger took it over and told the whole story but from his perspective.

I had the entire 1978 roster memorized and the three-deep.

I'm more Dallas Cowboys than Jerry Jones.

No, thank you Quinn Ewers for all you did to make us relevant again and representing this program with incredible integrity. When you got here this program was a disaster. In a short time, you had a major impact on turning it around along with other players and coaches. Good luck on a lucrative pro career. THANK YOU.

My brother and I worked there for a bit during college. Rooster and his family were/are great people and it was fun working with them. As I recall, Fred Akers daughter married Rooster’s son.

“Texas quarterback Quinn Ewers turned down an $8 million NIL offer to transfer to another school for his final year of eligibility because he was ready to move on and enter the 2025 NFL and also to preserve his college football experience as a Longhorn, sources close to Ewers told Horns247,” Brown wrote for 247Sports.

Wish ONLY the best. What a Longhorn:bevo:
