Our next OC and DC

Who was in charge of situational play calling?

That was a good review of the rush-pass game at Texas and comparison to the rest of the nation. I liked the 55-45 run/pass issue and the reason why the air raid system wouldn't work. I was glad to see the recommendation to look at the OC at U Memphis. The guy had results.

As for as who was in charge of the situational play calling, watching the games it looked to me like no one was.

Virtually no restaurants in Port Arthur any more. Probably the best is the old Luby's on Stadium @ 73.

Seafood place under the bridge never reopened after the hurricane.

Connie Megas has the best gumbo at The Schooner in Nederland. Not sure if Sartins is open on Nederland Ave or not. There is a new place on the river in Port Neches City Park. Haven't been there because I can't bring myself to eat seafood on a toxic waste site. If Lloyd Hayes hadn't annexed that worthless swamp between 73 & 365, Port Arthur would have no tax base outside the old Gulf & Texaco plants (now Valero & Motiva).

As recently as the late 90s, there was nothing near the Cleveland airport. Continental put their people up at a cheesy motel that doubled as a bad truck stop. Flight attendants were not allowed to leave their room without a security guard to escort them to the vending machines.

I was making a connection in Cleveland to Milwaukee. Weather and equipment delays had everyone stuck in the airport because (1) we didn't know when we would be going, and (2) there was nowhere close by to stay or east. I called Gordon Bethune's secretary at home and had her tell the people in the President's Club to leave it open so we had a place to sit, beverages, and crummy cheese crackers. We were only 15 hours late getting out of there. My last connection in Cleveland.

Sabre, the seafood place under the 73 Bridge was Esthers and that was Hurricane Rita in 05’ right after Katrina that wiped it out. Esther ______ ran for Congress or maybe it was State Rep some years ago. I think she lost. I would never live over there so I’m just going off of memory. Valero, Motiva and Total are three of my top customers for my company so I’m over there often. Port Arthur. It’s great for business and an easy commute from H Town!

Our coaching room is going to be full of ex-tOSU guys
It's a bold strategy
Will it pay off?

A mod for Ohio state is saying that Yurich is being let go and was told to find another job. Don't know if this is true or just another tOSU sour grapes article, either way it looks like he is our guy.

Not to get too political, but the burning river captured the public's imagination and gave political energy to environmental protections and results include the EPA. Rivers all over the country tend to be a lot less polluted these days! Thanks Ohio!

A little info on Mike Yurcich: current OC for The Ohio State Buckeyes. Yurcich was the offensive coordinator for Oklahoma State University from 2013 until December of 2018. He was previously the offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach at Saint Francis, Edinboro, and Shippensburg. Yurcich also spent some time at Indiana University as a graduate assistant.

Under Yurcich, Shippensburg had led Division II in offense (529.2 yards per game) and ranked second in scoring (46.9 PPG) in 2012, a year after shattering team records for scoring and yards. During Yurcich’s time at Oklahoma State, he was in charge of Mason Rudolph and helped guide him to what was essentially a rewriting of the entire offensive record book.
Rudolph broke at least 50 school records during his college career. In 2017, Rudolph had a sensational campaign that helped him win the Johnny Unitas Golden Arm Award.

Yurcich’s work with Zulli at Shippensburg in 2012 was pivotal that season, as Zulli passed for 4,747 yards and 54 touchdowns and won the Harlon Hill Trophy as the top Division II football player. Zulli set Division II records by accounting for 336 points and tallying 56 total touchdowns (two rushing). The 54 touchdown passes also tied the Division II record for most in a season.

In 2018, Oklahoma State finished No. 10 nationally in the Football Outsiders S&P+ ratings, for offensive efficiency. The Cowboys’ previous ranks under Yurcich in that stat:

2018: No. 10...2017: No. 3...2016: No. 8...2015: No. 19...2014: No. 78...
2013: No. 36

Other than a one-year outlier, the Cowboys continued on an upward trajectory and established themselves as one of the best offenses in the country. The 2017 group ranked first in passing offense, second in total offense and fourth in scoring. Heading into bowl season, Oklahoma State was in the top 15 nationally in each of those categories once more.

The official statement from Ohio State noted that Yurcich agreed to a two-year contract worth $950,000 per year.

2019 Ohio St. Total Offense/Game
Plays ...... Yards .......Ave Yds/Play
75.4..........531.5..............7.1

Some of the prominent players Yurcich has helped develop include J.W. Walsh, Mason Rudolph, Taylor Cornelius and Justin Fields.

To have a good running game prerequisite # 1 is having healthy RBs. That was an issue this year. Then you must have talented backs. Next blocking and play calling.

I don’t think that Stan Drayton was the issue as you seem to be suggesting.
I never suggested WHO was the problem...Just that our running scheme sucked, and we need someone to fix it.

Well he has experience and a history of good results. Can't get much better than that. I remember being nervous facing OK state's offenses.
Just thinking out loud that this could favor Card. But that doesn't seem to fit Herman's mould. So if yurcich gets hired this would be interesting. Perhaps a strong passing game will set up an effective running game. I love it when a passing attack and running attack feed off each other.....just sayin.

If we average 45 rushes per game @ 5 ypc. Then, 30 passes per game @ 9 ypa. That is 495 yds per game total offense. That’s a top 10 offense and I think those are conservative averages. With Yurcich and Ash as coordinators Texas will be pretty lethal with the talent we have now. I won’t predict next years record but there is reason for some optimism.

Thanks for the exhaustive research. One small correction: Yurcich is Passing Game Coordiantor and QB Coach, not Offensive Coordinator (Kevin Wilson...OU Sucks!)

So far, I like Mike Yurcich the best of the candidate names that have surfaced. tOSU has a good balance of the run and passing games. From watching our games this year we tended to give up on the run too early in games. Other factors played a part such as not clearing the gaps and slow to develop plays, but a solid "smash-mouth" type run game particularly on 1st and 2nd downs would have put the O in better position on 3rd downs to pick up more first downs, sustain a drive, and control the clock. Pick up 4-7 yards on 1st down creates more options for 2nd and/or 3rd downs when short yardage is needed, rather than 3 and 10 after a missed or dropped passes on 1st and 2nd.

All I wanna know is how to pronounce his name. “Yursich” or “Yurchich”?
