Our next OC and DC

This is the problem we've had. I noted this in regards to Utahs coach in another thread. We just havent been adaptable enough to suit personel. Everyone seems to think some of the highly touted coaches just have a good system and keep trucking along with it year to year.
This isnt so. Most successful coaches these days are so because they can and do adapt to changing personel, opponents, and other factors as the game changes (quickly).
You mean instead of just following a pre-set binder?

Those are some pretty radical ideas you are proposing.

relax. Herman will have this team loaded with all his players (recruits) including his type of QB’s before long and it isn’t going make any difference who is the OC or the DC.

Like I’ve said before, there is a reason the novices were predicting a CFP and 10-11 wins this year and the people that make a lving setting odds were saying 8 wins (and that total was juiced up).

Within 3 years we will be in the playoffs. And will be there yearly.

I hope you are correct. We have seven decommits from this years recruiting class. This is the wind in our sails and there will come a time when those sails start to wrinkle badly.

When we donkey stomped Mizzou everyone gave TH credit for taking over the O in that game.

Our offense was only ok in that game, 90% of that win was defense.

[Grayshirting] when a player commits but doesn't sign on NSD. They sign at a later date so they can count against the following class.

Apparently I've been using the term wrong. I thought it referred to "overbooking" offers to far more players than you can possibly accept, so that you can take the best players who accept and then pull the offers last-minute for everyone who accepted but was below the cut-off.

]That was an interesting post. It's funny how we can nearly pinpoint the exact MOMENT that Texas football became flawed (2009 CCG) and haven't followed any of the advice about spread passing since.

I did like how the article acknowledged that Saban's pass defense concepts didn't actually do their job despite what the stats of the 2009 title game would lead one to believe.

I was not a fan of hiring Harrell, at least not with Ehlinger. I do not know why everyone was hung up on him.

A Mike Leach spread is a bad idea unless we still had Buechele.

What we need is a running option spread with our current personnel.
This makes sense especially with our list of quarterbacks on roster and incoming.

Right, Stat...
So it was "Todd please dont go...we really need to do whatever it takes to keep this guy!"

Major Applewhite is rumored to be interviewing with the hogs for their OC position today.

I wouldn't mind having him back at UT.

Harrell pulled a Tom Herman with us to get a raise at USC. Bravo.
I don't necessarily think he was right for here and am not convinced TH was completely sold on him, anyway.
Do we have any confirmation there was an actual, binding offer made?
I personally am not worried about "missing" Harrell. All I have seen is that...supposedly ...we met with him.
Anyone have more substantiated info on a contract offer?

Major feels like a sailed ship / re-tread hire to me and I'm not entirely sold on his ability to evaluate talent or manage the players. That Houston melt down left an impression on me. I'd prefer to see some new blood on the 40.

Agree, plus I'm tired of Herman hiring "friends". So far it hasn't worked out and rarely does. Can't figure out with an open checkbook why we have the inability to offer the best.

I speculated after a couple of the losses that the coaching community thinks TH isn't very good. Otherwise, you are correct, why can't Texas get the best?

My sister is a professor & she interviewed at Texas a few years ago. What she told me about her experience stuck with me : she said they were all about the 'flash', the latest whatever, bells and whistles... everything technology... and all of this crap whether it was even effective or actually made sense for the course at hand. She lost interest very quickly and went with a different school that was going to entrust her to teach the material in the way she as a professional thought best.

I feel like this is part of why we get it wrong. Mack was hired for his personality more than anything. Tom Herman was the 'flash' hire. We're so busy schmoozing the prettiest girl at the dance that we don't notice the wall flower who's going to make the best wife you can imagine. I sometimes wonder if our administration even knows what to look for other than the superfluous and the right social 'fit'.

Sapo
What you are talking about was a small part of the concerns I was trying to raise when I questioned our overall culture and proceeded to get jumped from all angles.
It's an unpopular position and no one wants to talk about it. I was lamenting the season the other day a bit and my wife brought up the highlight reel lockers. Smart cookie...and can cook.
Are we attracting the right guys, players, coaches or otherwise?
Think all the defections are just a normal part of ncaa life at every program?
Wonder if Matt Rhule would have even sniffed the forty? No need to wonder. We wouldn't have looked his way.
Defensive salvo arriving in 3-2-1.....

I get what you're saying.

The positive to take from your sister's interview is that The University now apparently puts a fair amount of focus on teaching. Under the "Dollar Bill" Cunningham regime, UT was all about bagging the most government-funded research. A prof who published a lot in respected journals (that nobody but a very small % of people in that field ever read anyway...) didn't need to be able to teach his/her way out of a paper bag. They had TAs to do the teaching heavy lifting.

Back to the topic: now that most of the top choices are off the board, let's get Lashlee (or Applewhite).

As the top options for OC move off the board, a certain DKR quote comes to mind:

Herman seems to want to run this running game juggernaut of an offense. He seems to want it to be just like Ohio State, when he was running the offense there.

Problem is ... he had Ezekiel Elliott.

I'm having shades of Charlie Strong again. Did Ezekiel Elliott make Tom Herman, just like Teddy Bridgewater made Charlie Strong? the QB's at OSU all had Zeke as an insurance plan.

I'm not sure that's the approach to take here at Texas

Ohio State's Mike Yurcich is getting love for OC over on Orangebloods. He was at Okie Lite (kicking our ***) up until 2018.

I like your post....but I dont necessarily think the top options are off the board.
Just the options pumped by the media based on rumor and speculation.
We may have lost a wing...or thigh.
Think there's another thigh or couple legs, maybe a breast out there still.
:hookem:

I hope you're right. Of course, as UT, we may be able to buy out and pay up $$$$$ some really good OCs that aren't even (publicly) in the job market yet. Yurcich certainly wasn't on my radar. There could be others.

Or we're a defensive stop against Iowa State from being 8-4
And perhaps a third and 17 away from beating what is now the #1 team in the country. That, and about $1.80 or so will get you a tall coffee at Starbucks.

8-4, had we gotten there, is not worthy of scheduling a parade.

Was just applying similar logic to the “negative” 6-6 record forecast to the “positive” 8-4. Acknowledge it’s not much of an improvement....

Interesting. Which department or College, if you could please?

Here is a nice piece basically vindicating Herman and the program on any notions that we "missed out on" or were rejected by Harrell.
Coach Lamons says otherwise...
Tom Herman made the right decision on Graham Harrell

I want to bring up another aspect of culture here and use this as an example.
Why do our fans and media immediately gravitate and repeat the most negative possible explanations for anything and everything that occurs, whether substantiated by facts or not?
On one end of the spectrum there is aggy...and on the other there is UT.
I think we'd be better served finding a more sensible and attractive middle ground. I know we've had a bad run....but let's not turn into "that" fanbase.
Assuming the worst all the time is A. Not very intelligent B. Self-perpetuating and C. No fun

Who was in charge of situational play calling?
