Liverpool FC 2008 - 09 Season Thread

Just as well. I'd rather risk losing to the Scum without Stevie MBE and El Nino than risk losing them for a couple of months.

I think we stand a decent chance given that the match is at Anfield and they have no Ronaldo. We still have a lot of quality players we can put out there:

--------------------Reina-------------------
Arb--------Carra-------Skrtel-----Dossena
---------Monster--------Xabi---------------
--Kuyt-----------Lucas--------------Reira / Babel
-------------------Keane---------------------

Good news - both Torres and Stevie MBE has passed fitness tests and will be in the squad against the scum tomorrow am.

Anyone heading the Fado's to watch?

getting excited now. Come on 'Pool. Beat the crap outta the mancs

Skrtel to destroy Berbatov!!

Oops. Sorry for shitting on your post. I don't keep up much, so I thought I would **** on a ManU poster on the Liverpool thread. My bad.

All right then - forgotten.

Next weekend we have almost a sure W (Stoke City) at home, and the Mancs play CSKA London. We have an good chance of going top of the table. Logic tells me we should cheer for a draw between 2 big contenders (maximum total points dropped), but if Chelsea win we'll be 9 clear of the Scum. Not sure who I'll cheer for.

I thought Reira looked excellent today and Benny had one of his better days. How great was it to see us play with width?

Monster and Xabi dominated midfield along with some excellent work by Kuyt and Keane to defend from the front. Easily our best performance of the year.

Champions League kicks off Tuesday against Marseille. COME ON YOU REDS!

i watched the match this morning at fado, freaking brilliant. after the first 20 minutes or so, pool just dominated. Riera looked outstanding. Masch gave an amazing effort to keep it alive for kuyt to set up babel's goal. Other than the defensive lapse on the tevez goal, it was a great game. they were minus ronaldo, we were minus nando, even draw.

hopefully this is just the start of a great season

After 24 hours, I think it may be hard to overstate the importance of this win. If the team feels anything like what I feel, I am full of renewed enthusiasm for the season. 24 hours ago I was expecting the worse.

I hope it happens for Keane-o soon. He's working his socks off, but he's clearly pressing in front of goal. If nothing else happens before then, we should play him against Crew in the League Cup. If he can't break his duck there . . .

Kuyt is playing great at striker, average as a winger.
Keane is playing average to below average as a striker.

Any chance rafa tries a swap? A few weeks ago prior to adding riera I thought we would be better off in the 4-2-3-1 to get xabi alonso, mascherano and gerrard all on the pitch at once. With everyone healthy I dunno what the optimal situation would be now.

quickly equalized. torres won possession in midfield, played it to kuyt deep on the wing, played it back to stevie G who struck a beautiful shot across the box that just froze the keeper. gotta love having 8 and 9 back in the lineup

Agreed, it was hard to watch. However, a win is a win.

I don't know how to react to this whole season. We've only looked good once (Scum), but we keep getting results.

We must not stumble this weekend. You have to get full points when you face promoted sides at home. Hopefully scum and chelski draw and we go top of the table and 8 points clear of manure.

F'ing sick about it. Did you ever see an explanation? Noway was Kuyt offsides, and he didn't touch the ball anyway. The only plausible explanation is that Torres was offsides (he may have been), and that his flashing in front of the keeper made him "active" in the play.

Here it is if you missed it:

Regardless, we were dreadful. We should have soundly thumped this team.

Nando in a perfect spot for both of his goals

Oh how sweet it would be for Keane to open his Pool account against spurs

Brilliant chipped cross by Keane on Torres' first goal.

Keane will get his eventually. He's been too good a scorer for too long for them not to.

Keano is on the board!

Torres blew past his defender on the right and put a perfect cross onto keane's right foot who put it away lower left. Returning the favor from Saturday. 2-0 pool over psv in the 1st

Wow, what an amazing fight back by our beloved Reds today (3-2 over citeh). Maybe this could be our year?

It's amazing how many huge goals Kuyt scores in relation to the amount of **** he gets from LFC "fans". Way to go Dirk, GET IN!

I know i sound like a Johnny come lately, but after Carra, Kuyt is probably my favorite Red. I have never argued the fact that his technical skills are a bit lacking, but they are adequate and when coupled with his hustle and effort, he's just a solid footballer plain and simple. Say what you want about him playing on the right, he does it without complaining. Glad to see it fall to him yesterday.

As far as the title goes, I would be spewing optimism right now if I wasn't also a Cubs fan. I learned my lesson with getting my hopes up too soon

Nice article in the guardian (and from a scum fan at that!). I'm trying not to get too excited because I fear having my hopes crushed, but the longer we stay top of the table, the harder it's getting:

Liverpool comeback shows they might just be the real deal
Late wins, comeback wins, lucky wins: Liverpool are ticking a lot of the boxes of the potential champion

A win is a win is a win but, as Morrissey almost said, some wins are bigger than others. To see Liverpool's delirious celebration of Dirk Kuyt's winning goal at Eastlands today, after they had been 2-0 down at the end of a thoroughly miserable first half, was to see a side with an increasingly powerful belief that destiny is with them, and that it has decided their run without a league title will end at 19 years.

Liverpool did not play particularly well until Pablo Zabaleta was given a straight red for an appalling challenge on Xabi Alonso, after which they picked City apart at will, but that only adds to the worthiness of their victory. There is an inclination to talk of such victories as displaying the "mark of champions", when a team have played badly but willed or lucked their way to a win.

Yet what is just as important as the perception that a lucky victory is the preserve of the bona fide title contenders is the extent to which the confidence and sense of fate that can be drawn from such victories permeates through future contests. Liverpool will glean an immeasurable psychological boost from the manner of their win.

There are still issues with the team, not least at full-back, but this will only reinforce the growing belief on the Kop that this could be Liverpool's year. Late wins, comeback wins, lucky wins: Liverpool are ticking a lot of the boxes of the potential champion. The force is strong in these ones.

Every title-winner recalls one symbolic victory: recent examples include Manchester United's heist at Anfield in March 2007, Chelsea's show of bare-chested cheek after withstanding a physical battering at Blackburn in February 2005, and Thierry Henry's 4-2 win over Liverpool in April 2004. Usually, by their very nature, they come in the second half of the season. But if Liverpool win the league this year, this might be the one.

Comeback wins (Liverpool have already come from behind three times to win this season) and in particular late goals offer a window into a very healthy soul – remember how many Manchester United's treble winners scored – and this is the third time in seven league games that Liverpool have won with a goal in the final 10 minutes, two of them in injury time. Ryan Babel's winner against United also came late, with 13 minutes to go.

Liverpool are gathering force through each game and, as a consequence, gathering an even stronger force for the long-game of the the title race.
