For Real ....Herman “IS” Done!!!

The man remains the best coach I've ever been around, and that includes DKR, Coach Broyles, Barry, Jackie, and OA Phillips.

I met and talked with Fred a few times in the late-90s when his grandson and my son were on the same football team (LTMS IIRC). His son Danny was dating a lady I knew from work, so we all sat together at the games. It was surprising to me how 'OK' Fred was about his time at UT, and how 'not-OK' Danny was about it.

There once was a group of fans at a University long long ago that were not satisfied with their coach. They demanded a new coach and wanted this young one from a galaxy not far away called Houston. They said he was young and an upcoming coach and we needed to hurry and hire him before someone else scooped him up. Afterall he kissed his players and was coached by the the great guru from the north. This group of fans made fun of another university in the galaxy for hiring this old has been coach named Fisher. So the university jumped in and hired this upcoming young hero from Houston. Low and behold .years later after the young hero lost games and tore down the traditions of the University, the fans were in worse shape than when they started. And low and behold the other university in the galaxy who hired the old worn out coach were #5 in the nation and in a position to make the vaunted CFP. But wait the university still has a great girls volleyball team: and we can still reach a bowl game so everything will be ok.

The replaced coach in this fable was Charlie Strong

....In a personal conversation with Coach Royal, Ray Poage, a couple of friends after a golf tournament, Coach Royal shared that he stepped down because he had trouble relating to the kids. In his words, The Tower, Bevo, Hook em, Texas Fight, The Eyes of Texas no longer meant anything to "today's kids" (1980ish), and there were fewer kids growing up living to be a Longhorn.....

And Barry Switzer's cheating!

What’s Riley’s Kansas State Record vs Herman’s?
Vs Mack???? Lol

I asked this during the game
Other than
(1) Unexpectedly wining a couple bowl games, and
(2) Crushing KSU
What were TH's high points?

ps - He also did have a couple highly ranked classes

Bottom line, I think it's just as difficult and stressful to coach at the following places, as it is at UT: Ohio State, Michigan, Notre Dame, Alabama, USC, Oklahoma.

Hey, that sounds like some pretty good company* as far as college football goes.

*I make no comment here about whether Sooners generally make for 'good company.'

Huisasche,

I wish I had known, I'd have met you before or after the game and driven out to Manor to his ranch. I'll call Diane and see how he's doing, Maybe I can arrange the meeting for you.

I once told Fred that it was my experience that the vast majority of the people that did not like him, had never met him. We needed him in front of people more often. That could create a problem because Fred one on one or one on five, was great.

I was on the sideline against Baylor when the game was in doubt, and Baylor was about to score. Fred called timeout, and called Ty Allert over. He told Ty to go tell the side judge (dentist from Eldorado, Ar) that Grant Teaff was going to run an illegal pick at the goalline on this side, and he wanted it called. That dentist hated Texas, but Ty told him, and he called it. Baylor didn't score & we won.

I met Fred too, and liked him
He came close to 2 titles himself - he can be forgiven for the ND loss due to the mismatch of their DL over our smaller OL, but he should he beaten Georgia
The main complaints about Fred, as I recall, were
(1) the "outdated" offensive schemes
(2) the bowl losses (in particular, the Freedom Bowl )
(3) and, at the end, he started losing to both ou and aggy

What rising young baseball coach dreams of someday coaching the Milwaukee Brewers rather than the New York Yankees...?

What rising young HS football coach dreams of someday coaching at UNT rather than the Texas Longhorns...?

Yes it was,and he was a terrible coach also. However,he did not tear down the traditions of the university or throw the fans under the bus. (Just to show you how dumb I am, I was one of those fans that wanted that young hero also)

Not convinced we win a NC if we beat Georgia.
Fred forgot to recruit-that was his biggest problem, in my opinion.
When he went to Purdue he ran the Run and Shoot, which I found interesting.
Strong was our worst coach —period. He made Chevigny look like Chuck Noll.

You pose an interesting question -- how Charlie might have handled last summer differently? One we will never know the answer

He did change to orange chrome Longhorns on the helmets.

Phil,

I was the last person in the locker room after the A&M game. It was just Ron Franklin, Fred, and me. Ron left, and Fred & I walked out together. He has NEVER said anything negative about Texas or the ****** way he was treated when he was fired. Diane, Danny, & Leslie are not so kind, nor should they be.

Deloss and I had a "one on one" visit about the classless way it was handled, and that WE do NOT do thing like that The University of Texas. Deloss agreed and let me know it wasn't him.

I met Coach Akers once at Scholz's beer garden (early '90s???) when he was part of the pregame radio show. Our D at the time was really aweful. During a commercial break I went up to him and asked why his D was always so good. His smile went away and a serious look came across his face. He looked me dead in the eye and said, Because I always had 7 or 8 guys that really wanted to hurt the ball carrier!

Going off memory here, but we were #2 going in, riding a long win streak (17g) and Miami had a loss that season. I dont think the media would put 11-1 over 12-0, do you? Maybe today its somewhat different but back then undefeated was a big deal

When we lost to Georgia. Miami was “extra motivated” to beat Nebraska, since they could now win the National Championship. Not sure they pull it off without that incentive.

Governor Shivers was really pissed at Coach Royal for doing a tv commercial for a bank that rivaled a was more a factor. Shivers-owned bank. A possibly-true old rumor.

Chop,

Never heard that story. The fact that neither Governor Shivers nor Frank Erwin like losing was a factor. I don't believe they forced him out in 76, but rather from his conversation, that he was tired of what college football had become. He never, however, tired of what golf had become. He was very approachable, particularly if you had a tee time.

DKR wanted Campbell, an assistant, for his replacement. Erwin disagreed iirc.

I am an egomaniac and so is most everybody else on this board except maybe Bill in Sinton.

President Bone Spur gave the presidential medal of freedom to Lou Holtz the other day. Today he gave it to some wrestling promoter. I tell you, I want to live forever because things are getting so much crazier as we go along. Let 'er rip.
Don Gables is a college wrestling legend, you old fool (I say this with affection).

But did they live happily ever after anyway?

Some of their women make for good company.

The university from the other galaxy called SEC lived happily ever and came close to getting something in their showcase. The other university continued living in the galaxy of malcontents and with their hero
