For Real ....Herman “IS” Done!!!

Liberal arts school going forward....

When I was in school, there was a lot of chatter that profs and admin types thought football was way too prominent at UT and they preferred us to be a type of "Berkeley West." That idea was backed up by an unusual amount of hiring from there.
It does sometimes feel like they won the war while I was not looking

Not a life or death choice just a decision by an individual to choose health and family first. A decision that deserves respect.
CDC will do his job and look to the future of the program and TH will prepare the team to play KS on Saturday.
Go Horns!

I can't believe you didn't see this, Joe?
Haven't you read "Witness"?

With all do respect, PB....The odds of this being about health and family are appx .0000001%

Big school(not Texas) representative [grabs a phone and dials Meyer's agent].
"Hey....So, we've got some big bucks lined up over with your clients name on it...next couple years as soon as we figure out how to get rid of this other bum we've got. Is this health stuff true...Meyer done??"
[Agent] (...barely audible chuckle then clears throat....)
"Uh..yeah...No....I mean...Yes, Mr. Meyer and his family had some pause about health you know...and stress...but , no, he's not done and we will gladly look at your offer here with all the others we've been compiling during this last go round with Texas. Let us know how it goes with your bun there...keep us posted.. and let's talk soon."

Btw...I'd have called the agent by name, but I couldn't readily locate it because of this>>>>>
Report: Urban Meyer and agent parted ways during Smith saga
(Apparently agent got tired of Meyers arrogance and not listening to him or anyone)
That's another reason why if you think he's listening to family and others or letting health or advise or anything else of the sort deter him....you might want to reanalyze that position)

Paysites all chiming in with same story -- health reasons
Wanna bet UM will return to coaching and has his eye on another job opening in the near future?
Great coach but I wonder if he could really be committed to being a Longhorn.

Now that Urban is out of the picture. Who do we think is another possibility or will Herman keep his job?

And this^^^^^ ...along with a few other things.....is what outsiders have been citing as the real issues down here. (And I think you left a few people/groups out)

I remember when I read Hartzell and Eltife were taking the lead in negotiations with Meyer and CDC was deferring to them. My first reaction was this is probably not a positive development. I dont think I would stay on the job under those terms -- "You get to hire the women's basketball coach but when it comes time to pick a new football coach, we are taking over." Steve Patterson did not get to hire the football coach either, but he was a little desperate for a job at the time. CDC was not. He had a nice, comfortable gig where things were going well without anywhere near the same pressure and scrutiny. And now that this is over (or at least appears to be), they are just going to dump it back in his lap -- "here ya go Mr. AD, we're out, good luck from here." I would love to get a few drinks in CDC some night and let him air it out.

Not a life or death choice ...

(a) You seem to be contradicting yourself since that may be exactly how Meyer and family looked at his taking the job or not - his life was on the line
(b) As far as our side goes, the choice may well have decided the life or death of the football program, at least for the next 4 year cycle. I would further argue that 4 years of CFB can feel like a lifetime

We are not the only ones that guy has performed well against. He was 3* because he is so damned tiny. Those kinds of backs have plagued us for decades. Does the name Quentin Griffin ring a bell?
Yes, he performed well against TT and Kansas. But his average YPC against Texas was double what is was against those horrible defenses. And a number of B12 teams held him to under 3 YPC. C'mon now.

Orangebloods brain trust thinks that it's Urban or Herman and they have a good point. If not Urban, who could we all agree on? Certainly not any of the names I've heard so far; Campbell, Crystobal (sp?), Franklin, etc. They're all just Stong/Herman v03 - one season wonders with no long term record of success.

It will cost $15 million to buy out Herman, $24 million to buy out Herman and all coaches, plus the buyout on whatever coach we would hire! Oh and of course, the new elevated salary and long term contract on the new coach. For that kind of dough, you gotta be sure. That cost could approach half the cost of more of the south endzone expansion.

Darrell Lovell (I know, I know) but anyway, Darrell Lovell says Campbell, Whittingham, Allen or Sarkisian all make sense
Or, make a run at Brian Kelly (who he says is underpaid at ND) or Dan Mullen.

Orangebloods now says the the Urban dream is over. A "high level source" has told them that Urban says he doesn't want to return to coaching because of his health. 2020 just continues to suck.

Texas is an embarrassment now. Guess my weekends will be free next year as well. Won't watch any games coached by Herman, and I'm sick of getting my blood pressure and hopes up when the next wonder boy coach comes along, if they do fire Herman.

I guess Meyer realized this wasn’t worth the hassle. Probably remembers Gator alums drove him sick and Texas would be worse.

The only "whale" left in the coaching sea is Dabo and he'd be a fool to come. He's a legend and set for life in S.C. Saban is too old now. There's nobody.

We made our bed with Herman (and paid him plenty) and now we're stuck with him.

Agreed. Please send me message when I can return from hibernation/looking for other “hobbies.” Just worn the hell out since 1983 (other than MB years) of going through this silliness.

If they keep Herman, next year will be even worse. He will have gotten away with the summer controversy and survived a ****** season considering he supposedly had the talent to maybe be undefeated and in the playoff hunt. Instead, another loss to TCU and OU as well as whoever else they lost to.

What incentive is there for him to do better and lose the arrogance?

Orangebloods contradicts themselves weekly - idiots...

JF and Rain - you are both probably correct.

I let my pre coffee civility post that it was a decision based on health and family first when upon reflection and a cup coffee the cynic side says that TX got played and UM, pay sites, the media and several HC/agents got paid.

I guess some with in the administration have gotten their wish. Texas football is now the Virginia Cavaliers.

Here is the Wolken piece on Herman

" .... You can play the underdog card a few times a year at most programs in college football because most of them lose a lot. You shouldn’t have to do it at Texas.

At the end of the Mack Brown era, the Texas program was soft and comfortable. Under Charlie Strong, it was disorganized and lacked identity. And under Herman, its defining characteristic is how often its back is planted to the wall.

It’s not so much that Texas is 6-3 this season, or that Herman is 31-18 overall, that suggests he’s not the right coach for the Longhorns. It’s the pervasive sense of ordinary they project on a weekly basis. They get into dogfight after dogfight, too many of which they lose. Then, just when it looks like things are about to spiral out of control, Herman brings them back from the brink with a great performance that makes everything seem OK.
* * * *

In fact, it’s obvious that even if Meyer declines, it’s not inconceivable that Texas brings Herman back for another year and everyone pretends like it never happened. Who has time for hurt feelings when Texas owes him $15 million either way?

“When you don’t get on the Internet and you stick to Yahoo News and Words with Friends and the Chive app when you’re bored, you tend to stay above the fray a little bit,” Herman told reporters after the game.

Of course, “above the fray” is not how anyone would describe Herman, a coach who mocked Missouri quarterback Drew Lock’s touchdown celebration during a bowl game in 2017 or flipped a double bird at Longhorn Network cameras on signing day because he didn’t realize they were live. Heck, his wife Michelle once wore an “OK cool, Hook ‘em” T-shirt to a game, which was a reference to a text exchange that became public where former Ohio State assistant Zach Smith accused Herman of infidelity.

Above the fray? Please. He is the fray. And his immaturity is a big reason why his relationship with Del Conte, to the extent it exists, is purportedly in a pretty rocky place.

But ultimately the reason Texas will consider making a change is because it shouldn’t require being an underdog to play its best football. For Herman, that’s not a bad trait to have as a football coach. It’s just not the right one at Texas. "

Tom Herman has only himself to blame for situation he's in at Texas

My feeling is this; there is no Plan B if it means buy outs totaling $24 million (including the assistants). If this was Herman's last year and there were no buy-outs then Plan B would look a lot better. They needed an absolute home run to swallow that kind of dough.

Now, it's the realization that the recruiting situation is absolutely a huge problem and we have nothing that can turn this around with the excitement needed to right the ship.
