Mike Cotton and Coach Royal ... sidelines of the Cotton Bowl game after 1961 season. The backfield was: James Saxton, Mike Cotton, Ray Poage and Jack Collins.
Thanks to a fellow poster below for the photo.. here's a smaller version...
Texas My Texas,
Unfortunately, my computer isn't allowing me to see your pictures. Thanks, though. (BTW, I do remember the Mike Cotten picture--I think I have it in my newspaper collection from the '60s.)
Another poster included a picture of a #22 playing Mississippi, supposedly in the January 1, 1962 Cotton Bowl (Texas 12, Mississippi 7.) I've seen that in a UT football book, maybe on Royal. Actually, though, I suspect it was taken at the December 1966 Bluebonnet Bowl, in which we beat Ole Miss 19-0. At any rate, I know it's not of Ray Poage, who wore #33, not 22, and was much taller and more slender than this guy. (Ray was a 6'4", 200-lb. fullback who sometimes ran the 440 on the UT track team! He was a split end for a number of years in the NFL. Tragically, he committed suicide in the '90s, according to Cotten, who is a friend of mine.)
[Later] I did just see that last picture--a really good one, I believe of Worster scoring against OU on Oct. 12, 1968. That was a classic, in which we drove 83 yards in the last 2 minutes to win 26-20, the second game in our 30-game winning streak.
Here is another shot that to me says it all about UT football....a pivotal moment IMO the greatest win in UT history..the 1970 Cotton Bowl over ND..what a friggin game..I guess Huston is just a chip off the ole block!!!!
Texas My Texas,
I just now saw the Cotten picture--a classic, all right. Thanks also for the great picture of Jerry Cook, taken after the first of his 3 interceptions in that same, spine-tingling Cotton Bowl of 1-1-62. The '61 Horns, relatively small but very quick and fast, were outgained by the extremely powerful Rebels (whose line outweighed ours by 20 lbs./man), but stopped Mississippi when they had to. Sports Illustrated's capsule description went something like this:
Ole Miss made too many mistakes, Texas' jackrabbit backs were too fast and their light line just good enough, as the Longhorns hung on to win a thriller.
Huckleberry's post is a sweet pic even w/o TJ. Such great senior day smiles! But the photoshop is so awesome, where he looks like he's patting the poor okie on the shoulder in mock sympathy, plus the look on his face from the picture works perfectly as a taunt even though it obviously wasn't in the original.
Texas My Texas,
Thanks for two more good ones, which I don't think I've seen before. You're definitely right that the first one, showing Street and Danny Lester against Tennessee, was from the January 1, 1969 Cotton Bowl. We won that 36-13, and it could have been worse--we led 28-0 at the half, with over 300 yards offense, before coasting most of the second half. My brother remarked, after Royal was told by the post-game TV interviewer that the Horns had come up one yard short of a CB total-offense record (over 500), that Darrell's surprised "You don't say?" look seemed to suggest that he was thinking, "Maybe I should have kept Worster in a play or two longer!"
I'm pretty sure the second picture is of our offensive starters from the 1970 team--guys like Worster, Bertelsen, Eddie Phillips, Jerry Sizemore, Derryl Comer, etc. Really neat--thanks again!
