Cotton Bowl: Horns-Buckeyes Game Thread

I think Coach spent way too much time trying not to hurt feeling and stroking egos. 1st and goal on the 1 yard line twice and our BEST RUNNING QB is on the sidelines??? Makes no sense. I feel so bad for this team, especially the seniors. I hope the way we finish doesn't affect any of our return talent.
Agree.

First & goal. Heavy package hasn’t worked all year against a decent team. Here’s an idea. Fake the run and throw a pass from that package. Have we done that all year?

Second and goal. We have been unable to run wide against teams that had athletes, all year, in the red zone, like Georgia or Ohio State.

You’ve got a dynamic playmaker who’s about 6’4” and 235 on the sideline. Geez.

We might’ve lost the game anyway, but Sark didn’t give this team a reasonable chance of scoring the tying TD, and that’s on him.

My final thought is this. The final score in no way reflects what kind of game this was. Most people thought we'd get blown out of the stadium. Hell, Herbie and Fowler sure as hell did. We played them toe to toe. A penalty here, a good bounce there, no brain lapses by the coaches and we win. Things just didn't go enough our way. I don't like OSU but they are a damn good football team. I don't think ND can hang with them.

Oh well, we don't like each other, or at least each other's opinions, after a loss. The internet isn't always fun, but at least this isn't shaggybevo...

This 13-3 team will finish in the top 4. They go into next season stacked, with the #3, #6, and #1 recruiting classes over the past three years. And with whatever Sark can pull in off of the portal. This team will continue to improve. And I believe Sark will too. Just four years ago they finished 5-7 and couldn't beat Kansas.
Texas is ranked #4 in final AP poll. There is no more polling after the CFP.

None of that means jack without conference and/or national titles.

Texas has run a short yardage formation with either Wisner or Blue in pistol and Gibson offset for potential quick hitter. Had to be a better second and third down option than a deep pitch when the defense is all ag the line due to the ball at the 2. Ewers was not the same after the oblique injury and his passes seemed to have less zip and more float later in games.

Arch is a dual threat and will play great. But he'd pretty much have to be junior year Vince Young to get a favorable rating from a majority of Texas fans.
In this very forum I was called an idiot when i disputed the assertion that a hot shot recruit from Louisiana was going to replace Young in the starting lineup. This was after Vince played like Superman against Michigan in the Rose Bowl.

Oh, I know and that happens a lot in football. QBs can sometimes get out of it but with Ewers lack of mobility and lack of pocket presence a sack/turnover happens constantly.
I think he managed pretty well with a weak running game and an offensive line that can't run block very well.

Holding that wasn’t called was huge. We should have run a qb sneak 4 times in a row, or how about even once. Maybe roll Ewers out or Manning. Simplicity in crucial situations is all we needed.
^^^^^ THIS. Sark and Coach K cost us the game by not adhering to this simple axiom.

The game really turned on the holding on Simmons not called on third down. Would have been third and 18 or so if called and back them up to around their 25. Texas had momentum and would have gotten good field position with a tie game. Still you cannot have first and goal at the 2 and not score and you certainly can’t have a play call that pitches the ball backwards six yards against a fast defense. We will see next year if Ewers not being a real running threat negatively influenced Sarks play calling. One other thought, Williams clearly was not anywhere near 100%. Goosby should have been in there.

Arch fumbles EVERY TIME he touches the ball! We are gonna miss Ewers! Arch ain't as good as you guys think! Please bookmark this!
