Cotton Bowl: Horns-Buckeyes Game Thread

so we lose by 7 instead of 14...
Huh? Without that play it's 14-14 instead of 14-21, so we obviously don't go for it on 4th and goal from the 8, we kick a FG for the 17-14 lead.

Overall though, can't blame the defense or Pete. Offense was a non-factor for the majority of the game. Way too much talent to put up 14, 15, and 16 in regulation the only times we played top level opponents.

this is 2 years in a row we lose in the final 4 due to terrible play calling and poor execution
I don't know about that. Penix was the most accurate QB I think I'd ever seen when we played him. Against Michigan? He missed guys that were wide open. If he had played like that we would have won that game.
But I think we played a great game tonight, except for two boneheaded calls by the coaches so I agree with that part of your statement.

1st and goal from the one and we end up giving up a touchdown the other way. Why did he not bring Arch in to go up the middle?

20 seconds left in the half we decide to blitz and they saw it coming, throw a screen and it goes for a 75 yard TD.

That's your ball game. Two plays.

But Quinn missing that 3rd down throw for a first down really turned it.

The game really turned on the holding on Simmons not called on third down. Would have been third and 18 or so if called and back them up to around their 25. Texas had momentum and would have gotten good field position with a tie game. Still you cannot have first and goal at the 2 and not score and you certainly can’t have a play call that pitches the ball backwards six yards against a fast defense. We will see next year if Ewers not being a real running threat negatively influenced Sarks play calling. One other thought, Williams clearly was not anywhere near 100%. Goosby should have been in there.

Yep. Sawyer completely beat Williams on the fumble/TD.

An OSU v. Neutered Dame. One of them has to win. Who do we despise more? My Axis of Evil has been: 1) aggy, 2) land thieves, 3) nd. However, I really despise an OSU fans. NC game will be watched through the bottom of multiple gin & tonics. Will be Beefeater gin. I want alcohol, not too concerned about taste. Tanqueray would be used for watching Texas in the NC game. Ada Lovelace for celebrating a Natty. See ya next year, Ada

Pete gave away the middle pass all night long. The defense kept us in it with the opportunity to tie it up and have the chance to win.

I dont like to whine about the officiating. But that 3rd and long on OSU's drive for their third TD with the throw to Gatlin, or whatever his name is was the back breaker. Because that was an obvious hold against Simmons. To me, that was a huge turning point. I think OSU holds on every play, like OU, knowing it won't get called on every play. But that was huge, IMO. But we still had a chance. I credit the kids, and especially Ewers for leading us back down the field. I know a lot of guys on here don't like him and I don't think he's perfect. But I admire him.

I think Coach spent way too much time trying not to hurt feeling and stroking egos. 1st and goal on the 1 yard line twice and our BEST RUNNING QB is on the sidelines??? Makes no sense. I feel so bad for this team, especially the seniors. I hope the way we finish doesn't affect any of our return talent.

Agree

Right tackle got whipped all night long. Take a look at the scoop and score on 4th down.

Oh, I know and that happens a lot in football. QBs can sometimes get out of it but with Ewers lack of mobility and lack of pocket presence a sack/turnover happens constantly.

Losing like this is usually a motivating tool.
We'll see if that pans out.

Constantly is an inaccurate statement. I'm sick of guys ripping on Ewers. The dude isn't perfect but he's got brass. He wants to win. And his teammates love him. That means more to me than a bunch of Monday morning QBs (yes, I'm one, too).

Horns Lost this game because of two bone headed calls by the coaches.
first: Coach K calls a blitz with 29 seconds left in the first half which causes the defense to lose containment. The osu kid takes it to the house. A giveaway touchdown. We are down 7 instead of tied going into the third quarter. We score in the third quarter to tie the game at 14.
It should have been 14-7 horns after our third quarter td.

second: Horns have the ball on the osu 1 yard line. Two minutes left and we are behind by 7 instead of tied at 14 like it should be. It's second and goal at the one yard line. Instead of quick straight ahead run or a r/p option Sark calls an end run wide left. A slow developing play. OSU has speed to burn at LB and Safety and cornerback. They beat our blockers and the running back to the spot. The play was dead before it got going.
Now its 3rd and goal from the 8. The odds of scoring drop dramatically in this obvious passing situation.

Had the bonehead D call in the second quarter not been called we could have burned clock and kicked a field goal for the win. But no. our coaches overthought the situations and outsmarted themselves.

Game over.

Our players deserved better from the coaches tonight.

He did have Reggie bush on the sideline back in the day on a crucial 4th down. Granted Lindell white was on a roll, but better shot was watching form outside the lines.

Oh well, we don't like each other, or at least each other's opinions, after a loss. The internet isn't always fun, but at least this isn't shaggybevo...

This 13-3 team will finish in the top 4. They go into next season stacked, with the #3, #6, and #1 recruiting classes over the past three years. And with whatever Sark can pull in off of the portal. This team will continue to improve. And I believe Sark will too. Just four years ago they finished 5-7 and couldn't beat Kansas.
