Coronavirus

Obama did pretty good with Ebola despite what trump said.

I'm not particularly critical of what Obama did with Ebola, but do you actually think the two outbreaks are comparable? Ebola had about 29,000 cases worldwide, and virtually all of them were in Africa. The US had the most Ebola cases outside of Africa with 11. There are almost 2.2 million Covid-19 cases worldwide cases that we know about and that China and the WHO are willing to tell us about, and they're spread all over the world. It's pretty obvious that it's a hell of a lot easier to transmit Covid-19 despite wildly more onerous containment measures worldwide. Ebola was horrific if you got it, but in terms of how big of a public health threat it was, Ebola was infinitesimal by comparison.

What specifically should Trump have done an exactly when?

That's the wrong inquiry because it allows for Monday morning quarterbacking. What Democrats are saying now is like someone saying that Bush should have grounded American Flight 11 and United Flights 175 and 93 on 9/11. Well, no ****.

The better inquiry is at the time that we supposedly should have been taking more aggressive action, who was calling for that action, and what was that action? That's what matters, and that's where Democrats come up empty. Most of them had nothing meaningful to say about the matter, and most of those who did were saying to let thousands of Chinese citizens come into the US and cough on people and the guy in charge in the Coronavirus epicenter was saying not to socially distance or to change behaviors.

Germany is starting to reopen. Link. Italy and Austria are starting to as well. Link. It's not sudden. They're doing to gradually, but they're reopening. And for the most part, people aren't crapping in their pants about it.

Who’s to say it’s fake. That’s a denial. Is this the same doctor that said trump was healthier than he was?
Who's to say ABC reporting using "unnamed sources" is real?
Ugly Trump Bias Confession Gives ABC News Another Black Eye

ABC News demonstrates ‘left-wing bias’ leading up to midterms, critics say

Pressing the secretary, Stephanopoulos asked, "So, you would have known if there was briefed to the National Security Council in December, wouldn't you?"

Esper said, "Yes. I'm not aware of that."

I think trump is his boss. I’d call that oversight.
Of course you would, and you would be wrong yet again.

The Committee on Energy and Commerce has broad jurisdiction over health care matters, including the major policies and operating divisions of HHS. Some of these issue areas include federal requirements and regulations pertaining to: private and public health insurance (Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act, Medicare, Medicaid, CHIP); biomedical research and development, including the National Institutes of Health (NIH); hospital construction; mental health; health information technology, privacy, and cybersecurity; the 340B drug discount program; the regulation of food, drugs, and cosmetics through the Food and Drug Administration (FDA); substance abuse and mental health, including the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Administration (SAMHSA); public health, including the Centers for Disease Control (CDC); and the Indian Health Service. 1 HHS states that its mission is to enhance and protect the health and well-being of all Americans.2 HHS has 11 operating divisions, including eight agencies in the U.S. Public Health Service and three human services agencies. These divisions administer a wide variety of health and human services programs. In FY 2017, total outlays for HHS were $1.13 trillion dollars and the Department employed nearly 80,000 individuals (full-time equivalents).

Who has a majority in the House of Representatives? Democrats. Why didn't they do their job as it relates to pandemic response?

I think he did well. We led the global fight against it. Part of the problem with the WHO is that we are not a leader internationally anymore and China has taken a leadership role in our absence.
He did horrible compared to Trump.
How exactly has China taken a leadership role in our supposed "absence" at the WHO?

I am starting to compile a list of the changes I have noticed. So far, I have from above --
-- I gained a couple pounds too, despite exercising about the same
-- there is more trash in the can (its heavier to roll out)
-- We run the dishwasher much more often
-- Electrical bill will be up, but gasolene will offset somewhat (+ less cost of TP, of course!)
Today I am adding --
-- I just noticed for the first time the vet assistant who came out to the car to pick up the dogs is pretty cute

Adding to this list -- traffic is increasing
Y'all noticing this too?
I had been taking some bike runs down the middle of some usually high trafficked streets - that is now over

Traffic in San Antonio is still light compared to normal. But, yes, I think people are wanting to get on with their lives, even if it means taking a small chance.

I heard old singer Christopher Cross is recovering from the virus. Strangely it left his legs paralyzed! They say it's extreme muscular fatigue and that he'll recover. Hadn't heard of that one before.

Seems like this virus can cause damage beyond the common flu which is normally aimed at the respiratory system. This one can damage kidneys, liver and apparently cause heart and circulatory issues.

So, just to be clear, the President has no responsibility over Health and Human Services? The department who's an appointed position who is a direct report to the President?

How did he do horrible?

I listened to an interview from someone who used to be involved with pandemic response. We used to be a leader in WHO, NATO, etc.. On Ebola we took on one of the countries and put boots on the ground there to keep the disease there. We twisted arms of France and UK to get them each involved with "ownership" in a country as well. We were the loud voice in the room. China is now the loud voice in the room and they aren't as benevolent.

I listened to an interview with someone that was formerly involved with the pandemic response and they said Obama was horrible and ineffective. Ebola was isolated in ******** countries with minimal travel, neither communicable through the air nor while folks were asymptomatic, and we were months slower, compared to Trump and Covid19, in taking action. We didn’t get enough countries involved, nor did we speak loud enough.
As far as NATO, Trump has dragged members by the nose in order to get them to provide more funding.
Who’s on the leadership team at the WHO?

CDC Novel H1N1 Flu | The 2009 H1N1 Pandemic: Summary Highlights, April 2009-April 2010

H1N1 2009. First year of Obama's presidency. Like 3 months in.

Virus detected on 4/15/09.
WHO declared it a global emergency on 4/25/2009.
A test kit was developed and released within two weeks of 4/15/2009.
CDC started shipping testing kits on 5/1/2009. 1,000 per pack.
40 states were cleared to do their own lab testing on 5/18/2009.

I really think President Bush and Obama should be praised for the infrastructure that responded to H1N1.

I swear you just typed the opposite of of everything I just typed.

Ha! Been doing the same. Riding right down the yellow line.

I have been saying this for the past 2 weeks. The curve is like a balloon where if you push on one side, you get a bulge on the other. As soon as Americans realize we are all getting it, more and more people will return to normal.

It’s amazing how Obama transformed the CDC three months into his first term. What a bad ***.

treating this pandemic as a political issue is a dead end. Instead of watching televisions for "news" go online and hit the medical and scientific journals. This is nowhere close to being over or reaching its peak and we wont know when that will come and wont for a while.

As for Trump, he is guilty, if anything, of not looking at the ball, which is a characteristic reaction to these events down through history. And there is a long history of humans dealing with various epidemics of varying destructiveness

The level of denial still pervasive here and abroad is par for the course in such events.

There is not going to be a football season this fall but there are going to be a lot of funerals.

The really bad news if you have been reading the epidemiologists over the decades is that this is not the worst one the race is going to have to deal with in time.

If you have any land in the country I would suggest you put in a crop of items that can be canned or frozen because the economic consequences are going to be a lot more severe than this hiccup we are having now.

And lay in some ammunition because our less civilized brethren are not going to sit around and starve to death or do without their fixes.
