Coronavirus

Wonder why the press stopped the “no tests for nobody” cry? Trump solved the problem that Obama left him:

Roche, the Swiss drug company that is one of several companies working with the administration to increase the supply of tests, has started shipping tests to labs across the US.

  • ROCHE STARTS SHIPMENTS OF COVID-19 TESTS TO LABS ACROSS U.S.
  • ROCHE BEGINS SHIPMENTS OF FIRST 400,000 COVID-19 TESTS TO LABS
  • ROCHE: PLANS TO SHIP AN ADDED 400,000 TESTS PER WEEK

My city banned eating out starting tomorrow. So it was margaritas and tacos al carbon for the last meal tonight. I felt pretty bad for my favorite waiter but he said he would stayed employed making the deliveries, which will still be allowed. Good luck to all those people.

Joe,

I did the same thing. The owners have told the staff they will pay them for the two weeks and beyond unless the feds make this thing semi permanent. It really bothers me that our future is in the hands of the dumbest, most unscrupulous people I know - politicians.

UW is doing 2000 tests per day in Washington. Only 6.5% positive. Which means there is too much, not too little testing. Equivalent to TP hoarding.

This plan of social distancing and closures seems like a medically induced coma allowing the virus to hopefully run out of people to feed on even as the weather heats up, more testing is available
And treatments are worked on.
The alternative seems to be to do nothing and hope herd immunity happens.

Is this the plan you Trump haters prefer? Or do you have another plan?

Im not sure this cure is better than the disease. I feel terrible for the thousands of businesses that will likely go out of business and hundreds of thousands that will lose their jobs. Things are going to get really bad.

You have a better way to allocate scarcity?

Restrictions on buying ludicrous amounts has helped a bit and seems to be the best solution.

Isn't always done intelligently - for example my sister (who was only buying the amount of bottled water she normally buys anyway) couldn't get 2 packs of 6 each, but the woman ahead of her could buy the super super 40-whatnot pack.

You didn’t answer my question. What about the people who are too busy to go to multiple stores or wait for hours to get their TP stipend? Raising price on a scarce good insures it is available at a price.

In this case, it's raising price on a good that is available in abundance. Either way some segment of people are screwed. Either those who get in line first hoard it, or those who can afford to horde it keep it away from others.

I can't speak for all Trump haters, but I'm
all for social distancing to buy some time and save some lives.

The hand sanitizer and toilet paper issues come down to a supply and demand balance thrown out whack by people who bought massive amounts to resell at considerable profit. The New York Times did a piece on a guy who went all over Kentucky buying out all the hand sanitizer at major and minor retaers. He has inventory of 17000 bottles, but can't sell it because of AMAZON policies against price gouging.

That's happening, but I don't think that's what's driving this. I don't think most of the toilet paper is being bought out by opportunistic toilet paper resellers.

To the extent that it is happening, it's only happening because we're idiots. A reasonably intelligent person would simply tell the dude selling TP out of his garage for $5 per roll, "no thanks. I'm going to Walmart next week to buy a whole package of that stuff for the same price."

Price gouging is happening, but idiocy is driving this.

Guess that would depend on whether a reasonably intelligent person had alternative *** cleaning alternatives in the interim.

Why wouldn't they have such an alternative? TP is sold in stores, and there has been no disruption in supply. The only thing that has changed is a collosal and irrational boost in demand.

Hey: I'm fine. I just bought a 12 roll pack two weeks ago. But if I hadn't bought when I had 2 rolls left, I would be a little worried when I faced a barren TP aisle.

I think thats reasonable but I just don't understand the long-term strategy. What's the point of hunkering down for only a few weeks? Will the virus die out in that timeframe? I doubt it.

In the meantime, we are ruining thousands of small businesses. I just hope its worth it.

Hey Crockett, I have finally seen the light and now agree that socialism and big government is the best thing for the good ol USA. Mind if I drop by your place and we can discuss my awakening?

Dude, He's been President for over 3 years. So there's that. Then, if we'd have used the WHO tests that had already been validated this wouldn't have been a problem. Faulty COVID-19 Test Kits Tilt Scales in Coronavirus's Favor | The Motley Fool They call it a world class bottleneck. I call it an administrative decision that will cost lives. I'm curious as to why we didn't us the WHO tests. I guess that a future sub-comittee will bore out that hole.

FWIW, heat seems to not have any impact on this virus.

I've not experienced any heat yet.

It's way too early to throw in the towel on that eventuality.

I wonder about sitting here looking to destroy Trump (let's just get real about it) because of this. I don't wake up thinking about that. I wake up thinking this is like WWII. I wake up thinking the weather is the weather. I'm not swayed by one side pretending to have all the answers as long as we agree to tax increases and trust their handling of it. I'm not swayed by the side that attacked Trump over the China tariffs when China is the biggest enemy of the world. I'm not swayed by the side that waves people over from south of the border with hate-filled racist accusations as their weapon to run interference for them (not to mention sanctuary cities, abolishment of ICE, benefits and amnesty without a lock on the border so we don't end up back here again). I'm not swayed by the side that ignores why vetting a legitimate port of entry is important.

So the heat comment is disappointing to me. I think you're being political because Trump mentioned it. Maybe not. But a comment about warmer weather (which works like a charm on the flu) is about hope at a minimum. I don't think saying, "We're all F'd so get ready for natural selection to be the final judge" helps.

Bubba
If the point of social distancing is to not have groups of people in small places then warmer weather will get people spread out. That alone will help.
You are right. We do not know if warmer weather will slow down the ability of this virus to replicate as it seemd to slow down others.
Neither do we know it won't.

I think the opposite. Most of the places where the virus is growing exponentially are colder climates. Look at the John Hopkins heatmap. Warmer climates have fewer cases and lower growth rates. Houston is doing much better than expected given the population density and number of travellers. I think that is mostly due to the warmer temperatures.

Liz Waren said yesterday on MSNBC that if Trump and McConnell don't start acting on the coronavirus outbreak now we are in real trouble.

This always hysterical former lawyer and schoolteacher will say ANYTHING to get people to listen / pay attention to her rants. Her drinking a beer video was so awkward and phony.

Dude, I'm basing it on the fact that the virus is spreading in places that are not cool at the present time - Miami is a good example. I thought the same thing before (back on probably page 7 or so) so I'm not being political about it.

WSJ says that there is a generational war going on over COVID-19 and I agree.

If you've seen the pictures of Daytona Beach filled with young folks frolicking and hooking up or young girls licking toilet seats, you know that many young people are not taking virus prevention seriously at all. In fact, they seem to be daring it to strike them in the belief that they won't be very sick. They could carry it around for weeks without even knowing it, meanwhile infecting older folks (like me) who could die from it. Selfish, irresponsible, and potentially self destructive, not to mention stupid.
