China

The National Review managed to stay open for another day
Today they opine that China's "bad behavior in the wake of COVID-19 will leave it in its weakest global position in memory. "

"Sometime in late November the Chinese Communist Party apparat was aware that the ingredients of some sort of an epidemic were brewing in Wuhan. Soon after, it was also clear to them that a new type of coronavirus was on the loose, a threat they might have taken more seriously given the similar Chinese origins of the prior toxic SARS coronavirus and the resources of a Level 4 virology lab nearby.

Yet the government initially hid all that knowledge from its own people in particular and in general from the world at large. Translated into American terms, that disingenuousness ensured that over 10,000 Chinese nationals and foreigners living in China flew every day on direct flights into the United States (Washington and California especially) from late November to the beginning of February, until the Trump travel ban of January 31.

All this laxity was also known to the Communist apparat in Beijing, which must have been amused when Trump was roundly damned by his liberal critics as a xenophobe and racist for finally daring to stop the influx on January 31 — the first major leader to enact such a total ban.
* * * *

To the degree that we are suffering death and economic hurt from COVID-19, we can also attribute the toll to the Chinese Communist Party. Had it just called in the international medical community in late November, instituted early quarantines, and allowed its own citizens to use email and social media to apprise and warn others of the new disease, then the world and the U.S. would probably not have found themselves in the current panic. The reasons China did not act more responsibly may be inherent in communist governments, or they may involve more Byzantine causes left to be disclosed.

Add in the proximity of a Level 4 virology lab nearby Ground Zero of COVID-19, which fueled Internet conspiracy theories; the weird rumors about quite strange animals such as snakes and pangolins birthing the infection in primeval open meat markets stocked with live animals in filthy conditions in cages; and pirated videos of supposed patients dropping comatose in crowded hospital hallways. With all of that, we had the ingredients of a Hollywood zombie movie, adding to the frenzy.

Plus, 2020 is an election year — echoing how the 1976 swine flu was politicized. The Left and its media appendages saw COVID-19 as able to do what John Brennan, James Clapper, James Comey, and Andrew McCabe, the Mueller team, and impeachment could not: destroy the hated Trump presidency.

China will rue what it begat....."

Coronavirus Outbreak: China’s Botched Response Will Weaken It on World Stage | National Review

That statement makes no sense, people in two cities with type A had higher rates than type A people in the ‘general public’? Huh?

As of Jan 14, the WHO was telling the world the Wuhan virus was not contagious.
but these Chinese Govt knew at least by late Dec it was getting out of control. Indeed, we know for a fact they were in full mobilization by Jan 7.
If the WHO cannot be trusted, there is no reason for US taxpayers to keep funding it

If this was developed by China as a bio-weapon, it's a crappy one. Mostly only kills old people who are already sick. Not really gonna wipe out your enemy's troops with that one.

Most bio-weapon labs make bad stuff so that vaccines can be learned to be developed. It’s mostly a defensive position, not offensive, against bio-terrorism. Most people don’t know this.

Part of Hong Kong thinks they were developing it to clear the streets of Hong Kong without sending in the PLA and having another Tiananmen Square
Whether lab-created or not, it did effectively accomplish that goal

So it looks the the CCP kept news of the coronavirus under wraps until this deal was signed. They needed it, wanted it. They were throwing their own citizens in jail if they discussed it on social media (including doctors even). The timing certainly supports this theory. Additional support comes to one of the last minute changes the Chinese insisted upon -- they added a force majeure clause. Which I believe was added in late December.

Given all this, was this an act of war? Think of the age group most susceptible. They could have killed the president of the United States. Was it a war crime?

No matter your initial reaction to these questions, imagine this instead -- imagine the roles were reversed and it began in the US, Trump knew about it, had been exposed to it, did not tell the Chinese and flew to Beijing anyway for some meet and greet and signing ceremony. Think of the liberal reaction to that -- they would all be screaming at the top of their lungs. Not to mention the media reaction. There would already be new impeachment hearings, with Adam Schiff wearing a WWI era gasmask.
How would the CCP have reacted?

The death rate in Wuhan is falling

" .... But lately, the 4 percent death figure has drifted downward. For instance, the fatality rate in Wuhan, China, where the outbreak is believed to have begun, is now estimated at 1.4 percent, according to a study cited in the New England Journal of Medicine. The study was supported by National Health Commission of China and designed by the investigators. The study was approved by the institutional review board of the National Health Commission

If one factors in those patients who are infected, but do not get sick or tested, scientists say the rate is exponentially lower.

The current U.S. mortality rate, based on public statistics, has been hovering around 1.5 percent.

Is coronavirus really becoming less deadly? Or is our math getting better? ...."

Coronavirus death rate drops: Better math, better treatment or more testing?

Salvini wanted to close their ports and airports

Now he is showing army trucks full of coffins leaving Lombardy for cremation -- There’s no more space for them in the hospitals.

Executives from some of biggest asset managers told BoE governor that financial markets should close for two weeks – WSJ

So South Korea gave the Govt extraordinary powers after the last virus outbreak there 5 years ago (which they did not handle well)
Among their new tools is the power to look at everyones credit card receipts, plus phone and car GPS info (without a warrant or other application to a court)
They have the stats and data of everywhere everyone has been
They then run algorithms to determine who is most at risk based on this data
Then they aggressively targeted those people
This is supposed to have been one of their best tools for success against the Wuhan coronavirus

From reading, it looks like the average SK citizen is fine with this setup and use of their private information. I am not sure US citizens would feel the same, not to mention that pesky Constitution thing that would be in the way

Is chloroquine the solution?

Recent well controlled clinical study in France: 100% of patients that received a combo of HCQ and Azithromycin tested negative and were virologically cured within 6 days of treatment.
Chloroquine for COVID19

Also, South Korea is significantly reducing lethality of coronavirus by prescribing a chloroquine diphosphate salt + zinc treatment combo to block COVID-19 viral enzyme @ 500 mg per day of chloroquine + zinc for 10 days

March 18, 2020 - CHEAP TVS, EXPENSIVE FLU

"CHEAP TVS, EXPENSIVE FLU"

"Here's a thought: While self-quarantining with their families in multimillion-dollar Manhattan co-ops, Wall Street wives ought to have a chat with their Master of the Universe husbands about China, globalism and political correctness. Those are the vectors of their robber-baron wealth.

Thanks to “globalism” -- i.e., cheap goods from China -- we’ve gotten many wondrous things, for example:

-- Toothpaste on American shelves made with a poison found in antifreeze.

-- Toxic Chinese drywall installed in about 100,000 U.S. homes, emitting noxious fumes that destroyed electrical wiring and metal fixtures and sickened homeowners. Replacement of the drywall, pipes and wiring cost Americans billions of dollars.

-- Hundreds, possibly thousands, of American dogs killed by melamine-laced Chinese dog food in 2007.

-- The loss of about 200,000 beautiful maple trees lining the streets of small New England towns, eaten by Asian long-horned beetles that arrived on Chinese cargo ships in 1996. The U.S. taxpayer spends hundreds of millions of dollars to eradicate the repeated outbreaks that continue to this day, despite promises from the Chinese to do better.

-- Viral pandemics -- H1N1 (from China), bird flu (from China), SARS (from China) and now the Wuhan virus (from China).

Is it really worth paying $3 for a T-shirt at Walmart, rather than $9? The precise reason Chinese goods are so cheap is that they skip the crucial quality-control step...."

There was a critical period from Jan 15 to Feb 5 which required action by our Govt in DC. Quick and decisive action during this period might have prevented much of what we are seeing today. By our entire Govt was tied up 100% in another completely wasteful matter.
Are you old enough to remember those days?

Disgusting. I'm surprised there haven't been more pandemics.

The rest of the world has been conditioned not to call out Chinese culture for this or anything else. We saw an example of what happens in that regard this week. Meanwhile they are devastating wildlife populations around the globe.

Also, a couple things about the SARS virus --
(a) the VOX death total is an estimate (something they should have acknowledged but didnt). China never let Westerners in to look at it and so only the Chinese Govt has an idea how many Chinese citizens actually died from it. The real number is almost certainly much higher than what they gave in the video
(b) it's been 17+ years since that outbreak and we still don't have a vaccine
