Band and Cheer Stuff

@TEXnSEATTLE, so a cheerleader question from long ago that you may know the answer to.

The 1977 squad had Daryl Stowe that I knew. It also had a extremely cute blonde woman named Pam, that my brother, who was a student at the time, still remember and talk about from time to time. She had a short Dorothy Hamel kind of hairstyle...

What was her last name?
I was with Daryl on the 1976 squad and the lady that you speak of is Pam McGee....I think....she was one of my favorites. I got to stunt with her at many reunions throughout the years and knew her new husband from my time in the band, a great guy!...there was also a Pam Burkhalter who was the lady that tumbled the length of the field....Daryl and Pam McGee are both deceased, now. Pam was attacked by her dogs and a friends and killed....google her name and the story will pop up. This happened about 15 years ago, I think...

It was Pam McGee. OMG that is just HORRIBLE about the dog attack and her death!!! I did not know Daryl Stowe passed away.... both deaths are sad to learn about.

I will read the link you copied on Pam. Thanks

yeah, it was HORRIBLE....still remember sitting out on a roof top pizza place in downtown Austin with her, laughing....last memory I have of her....having kept an Eagle Eye on the cheerleaders over the years, Pam was #2 out of all of them over all the years....she was that good....

DKR credited our band with being instrumental (pun fully intended) in our win over Arkansas in 69.

You are slightly mistaken. In photo two of each cheerleader, each is thinking 'That's a cute hornfans poster.' (Obviously, a reference to me. Sorry, Chop, but I hear the aggy yell leaders said the same about you.) ;)

That Rice cheerleader is fairly smoking. Queen of the campus I would say.

Well, from a purely "improve the genetic stock of your family line" standpoint, Rice has got to be one of the best places to meet persons of the opposite sex. Of course, as it turns out in the real world, that sort of rational thinking rarely enters into such decisions...

On edit: UT students, forget cruising 6th Street and the bars for your dates, you should be cruising RLM, Cockrell Hall and the Gates Dell Complex...

Now here's some attractive young ladies who have the right idea:

I am hoping the MOB is going to poke fun at the Longhorn Band over the Eyes…sorry but that would be funny.
They probably will, but I have no idea what angle the MOB would take on that debate.
Would someone at the game please report on the MOB's show for those that are watching on TV and miss it?

Here's some good stuff.
From after the game vs. U. of Louisiana,
right behind the percussion section!

There's a lot more to it than just banging on the drums, folks.
Excerpt from the UT Marching Percussion Handbook below:

"Snares, tenors, and bass drums all play at the flattest angle possible. This is the first step to achieving our sound. It ensures maximum rebound from the drumhead, and a dark, fundamental based tone. The second part of this equation is the use of a heavy, legato stroke. When playing a drum, you should feel as though the sticks or mallets are sinking into the head, not crushing it. This analogy should help in avoiding a high velocity, pounding stroke. Let the weight of your hands and sticks do most of the work, and avoid a tense, tight grip on the sticks.

Stick Heights

Accurate stick heights promote musical and visual uniformity within the percussion section. Each stick height refers to the distance between the bead and the playing surface:

Sforzando* = 15” Stroke, which is initiated by the forearm
12” Stroke
9” Stroke
6” Stroke
3” Stroke
1” Stroke"

*An accented tone; root word = Sforza = Italian for strong; also Milan's powerful Sforza family (the Dukes of Milan)--one of the leading families that created the Italian Renaissance and thereby created the modern world, patrons of DaVinci and many others. Watch THE BORGIAS for more on this...

Our son played trumpet for three years. This was a staple for us after every game. We would find him and stand in front of him. It's great to experience live at least once.

I love that part of our fight song where it's basically just the trumpets playing a series of (8, or maybe 8-8-8-6, non-musician here...) notes together real fast with the booming bass drum beat --

"Yay Orange! Yay White! Yay Longhorns! Fight Fight Fight! Texas Fight! Texas Fight! Yay Texas Fight! Texas Fight! Texas Fight! Yay Texas Fight!"

That section, plus the trombones really distinguish Texas Fight from all those run-of-the-mill college fight songs that often sound almost the same.

Disappointed that the MOB was not in attendance last night, but we did play their School Song before the “EYES”….
