2023 Transfer Portal

Anyone heard how Abams visit went yesterday? I can't find anything on it.
Jeff Howe: "He went to the baseball game last night and had breakfast with the staff this morning before a campus tour. I'm told things are going very
well and from what I've heard from multiple people, confidence is building regarding Texas' chances of landing the Oral Roberts transfer"

One things for sure. He'd get a TON of playing time. We only have a couple of players right now.

Reports Arterio may be going to Kansas = I'm suicidal
Reports Mitchell thinking about not going pro = I'm elated
Reports Donewald is leaving = I'm suicidal
Reports Abmas visit going well = I'm elated
Reports Shedrick visiting Duke last = I'm suicidal
Reports Disu probably coming back = I'm elated

This off-season has been a bipolar beating.

I don't want to hear Morris' name mentioned around here again. The University stood behind him after his allegations and took the usual beating for doing so. Then he bails and possibly goes to this guy:

I’ll believe it when he signs. Transfer recruiting is not going “very well”, as was forecast.

Morris might also just be kicking some NIL tires. I don't know if RT would go the Sark route (kick players off for entering the portal), but I don't believe the basketball program has that kind of luxury at the moment. Wanna come back? Sure. Maybe get those charges dropped though.

Watched a bunch of film yesterday and today. Top remaining guys thoughts:

Taran Armstrong: Cal Baptist
The Aussie might have the strangest ability set I've seen from a top recruit like... ever. He looks like he's out of control on any given offensive possession, and then the ball somehow ends up in a teammate's hands on a great assist or in the net with a weird floater. Either way, I'd take him. Even if he can't get the minutes he was getting in the WAC, he'd definitely be a fan favorite with those crazy moves.

Matthew Cleveland: FSU
I know it's silly to say that a top portal prospect looks like he would be a good fit at Texas, but his style of play really reminds me of Sir'Jabari Rice. He plays everywhere on the court and is quick. He doesn't mind doing the "glue guy" stuff like take fouls and diving for loose balls.

Jaden Bradley: Bama
Circus freak and gym freak. For a 6'3" guy, he plays way above his height. I'd be super-happy with him coming to Austin after watching some of his clips against Houston and Memphis.

this is quite a bit smaller than your last list and the quality of the recruits has also deteriorated. Guess beggars cannot be choosers.

1) New Head Coach

All of the other variables you listed were already in play when Beard and staff successfully built the team that went to the Elite 8. Good coaches can sell a vision that get players to come whether HS recruits or top tier transfers. Terry claims he had a big role in recruiting that team so we'll see how this plays out this time around.
I don’t doubt that RT was in on the recruiting of great players for Barnes and Beard. But the HC is the big dog that has to close the deal. It remains to be seen whether or not RT is a big time closer.
Barnes and Beard have years of skins on the wall of closing the deal with big time players. We’ll know in a couple of years whether RT can do this at a winning level in a tough power conference.

I’m hoping like heck he can.

There is an aura that big time head coaches bring to the table and recruiting probably has a process of building up to that moment. RT needs his own RT and RT needs to develop aura. Does he have it? I don't know. Is he boring or is he soothing to parents? Does he project an absolute command of all the things it takes to run a big-time program and not just on the floor? People like to be impressed. They like to feel a part of something important, modern and full of vigor and growth.

I felt RT proved himself enough and should get the job because he "deserved it."

Maybe I was wrong. But, I don't like to knee-jerk. Yet, things are very shaky at the moment. We all knew the team was losing a bunch of players but felt we had great recruits, some young returnees including he who shall not be mentioned and then the faith in the portal as Beard had proven his adeptness at loading up quickly. But change occurred and even with the great season, the culture/vibe of the team is now RT's and not Beard's. Not everyone will be on-board.

We shall see.

Still nothing on Abmas based on social media. The KSU people have been doing a social media blitz of their own to get him to sign. I heard he had a good time with his Austin hosts (Disu and Brock).

In big news, Daimion Collins out of little Atlanta (Texas) announced his transfer from UK. He was a huge miss for the Texas schools back in the 2021 class when he was a top-10 recruit. I think a lot of people thought BU at the time would be good for him. He hasn't accrued much playing time for Calipari, so very little to go off of with his stats. But he's big and strong.

No News is not good news based on recent recruiting events.

my money would be on KSU, again based on recent recruiting events.

“ORU transfer guard Max Abmas is wrapping up his official visit this morning. There is definitely a level of confidence on the Texas side (yes, there has been the feeling prior that went the other direction).
A key will be if Abmas shuts it down. Doesn’t go to Wichita State. The vast majority don’t expect him to end up there, of course, but still shutting it down gets to decision time.
Don’t think Texas is quite as confident on Virginia transfer big Kadin Shedrick. He went to Missouri after Texas. The key here is making the Duke trip next weekend. He’s from Holly Springs NC… and Mom preferred closer once before. There has been questions how hard Duke was truly going after him, so that does have to play out a little. “

So no real news but the guy (Abmas) just left here.

Thanks for the update

Rodney Terry and staff is supposed to have an him home visit with Abmas this weekend as is Kansas state. This is a must get no matter which way you put it Terry has to get it done.

And now Harrison Ingram is off the board as he just committed to UNC. RT gonna have to come with it at this point we don’t even have a team screw one recruit like come on now.

According to BON, Disu officially announced he is returning to Us.

now, if Abmas would commit that would be a start.
I see Abmas committing to us is not looking good since he did not commit during his visit.

Maybe he told them that he'd commit if Disu, Hunter and Mitchell all came back. Or 2 out of 3. If so, we have a bit more time to wait. Nobody wants to play for a team that gets it's head kicked in every night in front of about twenty fans that bothered to show up.

Whew good job I’ll take the win along with Disu coming back now we need guards and wings. This kid gives some length we didn’t have this year but he still mobile like DD in some ways. Along with Texas’s S&C.( which is one of the best in the country) he will hopefully be good for us.
