2023 Transfer Portal

Texas needs to add about 4-5 players from the portal. Right now it’s not looking to good. Only one who seems to have serious interest in Texas is Reese Dixon Waters from USC. We seriously need about two guards, two forwards at the 3 and 4 spot and a true big.

I really want to believe and I'm trying to hold back my commentary, but it's getting harder by the day. I'll stay quiet and hopefully something will shake out soon. We need some top talent transfers.
I’m at the same stage right now. I know it’s still early but all the top talent is coming off the board and if they are still in the portal we aren’t in their list of final schools. You would think we would clean up in the portal but so far we aren’t doing so well and I don’t want to settle for less than when all the top talent is gone.

This was my concern with Terry being named the head coach. Not a splash hire. I thought the elite 8 run would give him momentum to recruit in the portal, along with minutes and minutes of playing time to offer potential transfers. Maybe it will change, but with no mention of the Horns in on any difference makers in the portal, it sure feels like all momentum has been lost. Possible that Terry is a good to great high school recruiter and not do much in the portal. Keep hope alive

Its ironic that its crickets from the "we have to move fast to keep rt crowd". Right now he is just what he has always been, a mid level coach. Yes this team loved him but that doesnt make you a good coach. It makes you likable but for 3m+ you better produce. I am certain that shaka and if we played beard next year they would have a field day with rt. Saw he is bringing back Frank Haith. Not sure if thats good or not. Dont recall Haith being very successful on his own either. Lets hope we dont lose more kids and hopefully we can pick up a few more.

Borrowed this data from another poster, but you can see how late in the cycle
all of our players from last years team committed. I am anxious too but I need to just chill and let the staff work. More players entering the portal all the time as well.

2022
Sir’Jabari: entered March 29th, committed April 19th
Tyrese: entered April 18th, committed May 27th
2021
Carr: entered March 17th, committed July 19th
Timmy: entered March 26th, committed April 13th
Disu: entered April 21st, committed April 26th
Bishop: entered March 31st, committed April 16th

Great information. Thanks! That probably took some time to put together. Let's revisit this at the end of May and see where we're at.

How DARE you bring perspective and facts to the conversation! Talk about a wet blanket, sheesh!

It’s quiet because nobody is worrying as much as you seem to be. Terry is a great coach and the man for the job. Everything will be just fine I promise. Why are you acting as if Beard did everything on his own? As Terry said he recruited 3 of our starters last year so he will get his guys just give it time. We all want things to happen now but that’s just unrealistic at this time.

As far as the Haith hire it’s a homerun hire. He has the ability to recruit and more importantly he is one of the best X and O guys in the country. Please stop worrying and give RT a chance to actually do his job.

Yes, JJ, one of legend's primary themes against Rodney Terry has been that "some coaches are great as assistants, but not cut out for the HC role". He has made multiple arguments suggesting this is the case for RT.

Yet now that RT has hired coach Haith, who was a FABULOUS assistant to Rick Barnes, and an ace recruiter for him - but didn't do all that well as a head coach, legend somehow twists this into a negative against Rodney Terry too. For me, this logical inconsistency only reinforces my belief that legend simply doesn't like RT, never has, and probably never will, so every time he posts about RT it will contain the most negative and pessimistic outlook about the man and his program possible.

Guys here is the only stat I look at:

On his own, he is a .500 coach. You guys just swallow the hook like a large mouth bass coming out of the water. This Texas team was not RT's, it was Beards. Yes RT was a recruiter for 3 starters but he was not recruiting them to play for RT. Doesn't seem that hard to figure out to me but whatever. You dont have to wonder on this issue, the stats are posted right above here on his record on his own. If you like that then good for Sangre and JJ. I just think Texas should not have to experiment like they have been doing in most sports for the last 10 years. In fairness Beard wasnt my choice either just because of his previous volatility and my concerns played out on a late December night. He is a good coach and will do well at ole miss. If rt turns out to be ok then good for him and Texas but the stats above seem so show a much different expectation. Now if we really do lose Morris, thats a big blow as that guy is electric and by all accounts will be a star and I had hoped that would be at Texas. Like I said, I look at facts and you guys are going from emotion. Just 2 different approaches.

The gloves are coming off a little here. I think this is a total back-stab after the university stood behind him in spite of the allegations. Even after firing Beard. No respect for this guy. There is zero loyalty and I don't blame it on Rodney. It's ridiculous that he's leaving.

Over here on the men’s side yal are frantic. Morris leaving ain’t just that big of a deal. It seems like it because yal want us to make a move but not that big. Also, whether it be Beard, Terry, or whomever we was going to struggle next year we was going struggle next year in my opinion. This team was older and the next team was going to be high turnover because we didn’t have a big 23 class coming in. I know we want to swing for the fences with big names but trust if you follow the portal you know there is really quality players to be got in there so just chill. Even if we take from our conf (which seems to be a trend) Okie state has 3 quality players in the portal that would fit and several other mid major players trying to come to the big fight. The way I see it Morris leaving frees up a ship for the next Rice

I think it's a huge loss. I won't get into the legal aspects, but this guy has DJ Augustine type talent. He didn't play much this year because of the guys ahead of him and now those guys are gone. And it takes almost all Freshmen time to develop unless their name is Durant. Shaka never did anything with 5* Freshmen and then they were gone.

He could've had a breakout soph. year and I don't see any Rice's in the portal. It ain't over until its over but right now the portal isn't looking very good at all for Texas. Nothing like what Beard was able to do.

Brumbaugh was also a top 100 player. RT needs to pull a rabbit out of the hat at this point.

I thought one of the strong points in favor of Terry was that the players loved him. Guess that was only partially true. Morris tweet or instagram saying he wanted to go somewhere he could develop his basketball skills ( something to that effect anyway) is not confidence inspiring. On the other hand he just may need to leave the state. He could transfer to ole’ miss and reunite with his fellow traveler.

I wondered if he was headed to ole miss as well. Big loss to Texas so hopefully we can find some replacement but we also lost Brumbaugh.

Terry isn't an idiot, but 2023-24 is going to be rough. We could pull 5-6 of the 2nd tier portal guys and still have a very mediocre season.

We're kind of banking on Hunter returning to be the primary PG, Disu to be "the man," Cunningham to put in more minutes, and Anamekwe to bring some of that intensity he had in HS. Beyond that? We're pretty much ending up with either garbage Power-5 guys or mid level DI kids who weren't getting noticed at weak programs.

Losing Morris is very telling. He could blossom and yet he bailed. Was it $$$? Was it that he thought the team would regress due to all the player losses? Such a shame.
