2023 Transfer Portal

Losing Morris is very telling. He could blossom and yet he bailed. Was it $$$? Was it that he thought the team would regress due to all the player losses? Such a shame.

I know it sounds dumb, but he hasn't had his charges dropped (like Beard) and I bet Terry alluded to it privately with him. Morris will probably end up at Baylor. Because... you know... Baylor.

At this rate, we need to start selling the playing time angle to anyone who will listen.

Dillon Mitchell declares for NBA Draft as exodus continues for Texas men's basketball team

And the hits just keep on coming. Hopefully, this is just to get an evaluation. If not, then I venture to say, we are possibly doomed, pending a flood of transfers in the coming weeks.

Mitchell was always supposed to be a 1-and-done. His numbers don't indicate it, but he'll get some serious looks in the Draft. His athleticism alone is superior to Jaxson Hayes and others we've had recently.

Just saw where AJ Johnson apparently has decommitted to go play pro in Australia. If Mitchell stays in the draft or does something similar like go overseas or g-league or whatever (or Hunter doing the same) we are just going to have to have to offer anyone who will come just to have enough bodies for a team.

Projected '24 NBA lotto pick opts NBL over Horns

This is now a dumpster fire.

I was on board with giving Rodney a chance. But I was also pissed at Dick Vitale for sticking his nose into the situation. He is a shill and a virtue signaling clown with no accountability. If we fell for the pressure then that was a mistake. I sincerely hope our leaders were strong enough to make the decision to hire Rodney without any influence from outside the program.

Wow. What's next RT? Of the 9 players in our rotation last season, only Cunningham has confirmed his return.

Terry was the recruiter for Johnson, so it's not like something changed internally. I think that's just more on Johnson to do what's best for him.

We really need Olivari to just say "I'm doing this whether everyone else bails or not," and that might be enough to secure a couple other guys with more eligibility left. This portal situation isn't good.

I agree that Johnson (probably doesn't want to mess with academics) and Brumbaugh (just wanted to go home) would have bailed even if Beard was still the coach. Who knows on the others? But we need to start getting portal commits.

Decommitting to re-open recruitment could be a Terry issue, but decommitting to move to another hemisphere to play professionally, probably has zero to do with Terry. Could be grade trouble, money trouble, girlfriend trouble or all of the above.

I followed Abmas a little at Jesuit and he has that same style as J'Covan Brown (hopefully without the mental issues). Quick to the basket. Likes to jack up threes on occasion but it's not his bread and butter. His lankiness for someone so little is why he got few looks from basketball powerhouses.

Like I said, at this point we need bodies. A guard lineup of Hunter (assuming he doesn't leave too), Olivari, and Abmas would be enough to keep us in the middle of the pack in the XII. But with zero depth beyond that, we're definitely not a top-25 team at all. Maybe not even top-40.

What do you mean no depth? Gavin Perryman hasn't entered the portal yet.

I dont know much about the Rice transfer target but doesnt seem like a home run if he picks Texas. I also dont thing Mitchell should leave as he has unbelievable athletic ability but was very weak offensively unless he got a dunk. He has potential thru the roof but its not there yet. Hunter had a few superb games last year but he doesnt jump out as a sure thing in the NBA so hope he returns. LJ Cryer from baylor would be a home run but time will tell if we are really in that game. In this day and time its all about the benjamins. Drew has the coaching skins to say he stays so not sure why he is considering leaving Baylor.

Cryer committed to Houston already.

Agree! He also needs to clean up his defense. I saw few times that he elevated to block a shot but then would hack on the way down. Block would have been clean otherwise.

Supposedly, Abmas is visiting KState this weekend. And I heard on a podcast yesterday speculation that Scott Drew might get involved since he now has to replace Cryer. If that happens, we would be competing with three coaches in the Scott Drew circle (including Drew himself) for Abmas. Is seems like the level of difficulty on this one is going up by the day.

Because often times, it's not about the coach. You apply EVERYTHING through the lens of who is the coach (except for the good things that happen under the guidance of UT coaches you dislike), and that's just not how it works for many of today's players.

Coach is like qb, you get praise not deserved and blame not deserved. Maybe rt gets both here like the coaching stats I posted, you dont like his stats and therefore you disregard them. Losing Morris is a big deal. Losing the recruit Johnson is a big deal. Now Mitchell has declared for the draft which is a big mistake in my opinion. Like my original post stated, you and jj love rt not on his record but on hope and like I said, good for you. I just think 3m +/yr deserves more than hope.

Legend, you are totally correct on Mitchell.

I understand your issue with the money, but what do you tell a top-level recruit when he says, "You want me to come to Texas when you pay the HC significantly less than most other top teams? Something is wrong so thanks, but no thanks." It is a delicate balance,

I agree on what you are saying about paying the coach. My issue has always been we are paying a guy who is a mid level coach at programs far inferior to Texas. In the business world you would never do that. Texas has lots of money so they are/were stuck on this issue. I dont expect RT to produce anything other than a mid level result next year based on his history. If I am wrong then Texas wins in the long run. I would have made his contract lean heavily to the money based on actual results. Some would see that as a problem and perhaps it is. Hate Texas wasting money on Charlie Strong, Tom Herman, and the rest of the people attached to the Texas sugar tit! This is like any government entity, sound decisions are not required because money flows regardless of results. CDC is a rock solid AD so I presume he did what he had to do. Lets just hope for the best.

In this new era of portel,NIL,and recruiting,it seems the only thing motivating these kids is money. I really cant tell whether school, education or coaches has anything to do with school choice. This is making college sports a lot less interesting to me. I personally cant see what texas pays a coach would interest a 18 year kid looking for a school. In this world there are too many other variables to be concerned about.

Agree you, Sabre and I wouldn't pay midlevel executives Senior Executive level pay, but the business world is full of organizations that did and continue to do so (especially in the financial and IT worlds).
