2022 Transfer Season

Was expecting this one. I'm still upset that Esmery didn't get to enroll at Texas after she signed her paperwork with Aston.

 
Looks like A&M has lost 2022 signee Brianna McDaniel from Illinois. Figured that would happen as she was probably close to Kelly Bond-White.

I'm not sure either makes much sense. Texas is younger and very deep at PF and I wouldn't think Owusu would transfer somewhere to be a backup. She seems to be a ball dominant player and no matter what kind of success she had at Maryland, I don't see her unseating Rori.

Well, Katie Benzan (one time Texas grad-transfer signee) was also playing PG for Maryland the last 2 seasons. Don't for sure know Owusu's natural position, or what she is projected to play as a professional. She has the size/height to play SG or SF, IMO.

Martinez is such a good rebounder, and her offense has improved greatly the last 3 seasons. While undersized, she has the physical demeanor to play inside the paint.

If April is following them, it could be impulse; or, she might actually think they can help Texas for one season in some capacity. Martinez did follow April back on IG.
 
Coach April following Brianna McDaniel and Ashely Owusu on twitter; they appear as recent follows to me, but nothing is for sure.

I remembered that Owusu was classified as a PG coming out of high school and it looks like she played there as a freshman but then was considered a SG during the 20-21 season because she won the Ann Meyers-Drysdale award in 2021 (top SG). A bit weird because she led the Terrapins in assists by a LOT (171 to Benzan's 96) but that could have simply been a function of that almost :hookem3: unstoppable Maryland offense.

Vic will go for Esmery, she is very strong both defensively and rebounding the ball.
 
Out of the players currently in the portal who do you all believe Texas will go after? I would say…
-Esmery Martinez
- Priscilla Williams
- Myah Taylor(maybe)
I would say Owusu but, I don’t think she fits with Schaefer and she is a point guard. Harmon has that spot locked. I haven’t seen any bigs who stand out besides Soares but I didn’t see her name officially in the portal as of yet. I’m sure I’m missing some but we need a backup pg, a wing, and a true big.

In addition to the players on your list, I wouldn’t be surprised if Vic kicks the tires on Lou Lopez-Senechal the 6-1” F from Fairfield, Connecticut.

She seems like Vic’s type of player. She would likely be one-and-done and would add another much needed offensive threat to our line-up.

Do you have access to the portal? :p

The tweet about Soares lists some pretty telling details that indicate she is in the transfer portal and looking to play her last season at a Division I school.

Unless there are players transferring out that we don't know about, I would pass on Martinez. Owusu is a different story. She's a special player offensively when she's healthy with her size and versatility as a big guard which is also a need.

If you can convince her to play off the ball seeing all the guards touch the ball a lot in Vic's offense, then you try to get her. With that being said, I don't want to sound like a broken record but they need a legit center with size in the worst way.

All I know is that Stanford killed us on the boards. Yeah, we crush the battle on the boards against teams like Iowa State; but if we are serious about improving our rebounding against the teams who ended our seasons the last 2 years (South Carolina and Stanford), then we need to address that area of weakness.

Taylor Jones led the PAC 12 in rebounding in 2020-21, I believe. And, we know firsthand what Esmery Martinez can do in the rebounding department.

It will be a bit abnormal if we don't lose at least 1 player to the transfer portal before the May 1 deadline; so, I'm counting that we will have 4 'ships available (unless Ebo decides to come back for another season).

All of this.. but have my doubts about Owusu being able to play Vic's defense.

Aston wanted Taylor Jones really bad. She was at her Texas camp that I attended and Aston spent a lot of time talking to her Dad. Her Dad is an Aggie and the thinking back when she was being recruited was that they had the inside track for her. Obviously not. She never did show a lot of interest for Texas when I saw her attending games. I think she was set on going out of state. I see her coming back to a Texas school now. Not positive but I think she was injured on and off during her career at Oregon State where she did play center. I watched her play as at OS and she was good but not elite. I think her best year was when she was a Freshman and they had a good team that year. She's a perfect fit for the Aggies.
