2022 Transfer Season

While I do not hold a PhD in psychology, I do have some counseling experience and an above average understanding of the various ways we respond to trauma. Saying that to gently suggest that we all get more familiar with the fact that everyone responds differently. I always cringe a little when we as a collective society respond with “I would’ve done this or that” as a reason to invalidate or even cast doubt on someone’s account of events. Ashley’s social media posts in early 2021 or the lack of portal entrants thus far as an indication that her story may not check out or be solely based on playing time is kind of dangerous.

If we look at the big picture of things that could happen within a program, she’s really not even alleging anything all that scandalous (IMO). My interpretation was that (in her view) this staff and the support system around the campus did not meet expectations in handling her unique situation that seems to have even predated her time on the 40. I am quite sure we all know people in our own lives who deal with abuse in their homes or verbal/physical assaults in the work place and so many other things on a much grander scale (think of the BU scandal) where those who are suffering do not report the incidents in a “timely” manner (if at all) and/or continue to put on brave public faces despite the internal feelings. That should not diminish their voice in the slightest.

I do not believe it was anyones outright intent to deflect or be dismissive so please don’t take this as me making an accusation or casting aspersions, just merely offering a perspective.

The whole thing... particularly the timing of it as the transfer portal heats up... sounds like and appears to be calculated and orchestrated with help from others (parents, Gerlich, etc.). There are social media posts and pictures from the same period (her time at Texas) that contradict what Ashley writes about. It's an obvious case of a player scorned over lack of playing time, and not worth giving any energy. Can't wait to see the matchups next year.
:hookem2:

As far as I'm concerned, Ashley's and her Mom's tweets (and other social media) since last April to the time she decided to transfer in November don't align with her story about the issues she supposedly encountered at Texas. So, she either never told her Mom (despite how close they suggest they are) what she was personally enduring at Texas, or she did tell her Mom and her Mom ( a high school head coach) encouraged her to continue her career at Texas.

This was her first full summer and offseason at Texas; and, she came back for the Fall semester, as well. It wasn't until November (when the actual season was underway), that she announced she was leaving the program.

I’m sorry for Ashley’s pain, but the pairing of her with Gerlich seems perfect. Gerlich failed to take responsibility for berating the scorekeeper and after being confronted with her behavior , attempted to paint Vic as anti women. Ashley now, even though she AND her mother’s posts during that time frame contradict it, cast blame at our program and staff, even bringing in her teammates. I think Ashley found the right place... Let the games begin!!!

Out of everything Ashley wrote, this is most concerning to me. What is she saying about her teammates? That they're turning to drugs/alcohol/eating disorders? She said she wanted to tell "her truth" but including her (former) teammates casts doubt on their behavior, which is unfair to every teammate she had at Texas.

Yes and a DELIBERATE attempt to harm our program and throw her teammates under the bus. Sorry, but there is no “delicate balance” here. This wreaks of bitterness over losing the pg position to Rori. The posts by both she and her mother contradict her claims. The timing of this is both deliberate and calculated.

Her only former teammate that seems to have done anything with her post is Kyndall - Ashley's post showed up in her IG stories along with Owusu's announcement.

I expect a Hunter transfer announcement any day to be honest. I wish AC well but tech might be the best place for her. She shouldn’t ever have to compete for playing time. College sports is a business and not for faint of heart. To be the best you have to compete with the best. Unfortunately not everyone’s best is enough.

Yep. And when she announced where she was going, Kyndall was the only teammate from this year who acknowledged it from IG stories.

I am thinking Geno has the right approach. If a player wants to go, let them go. Help them pack. Wish them well. If a player isn’t working out, encourage them to seek their place elsewhere, sooner rather than later. I notice that a lot of UConn’s transfers in recent years happen early such as Freshman Poffenbarger at the end of the first semester this past season (she was an early entrant last Spring.)

I believe that AC's post will fail to thwart anyone's interest in Texas. It will be easy to discount her comments by stating the obvious that it is sour grapes over her lack of playing time. If Texas was losing one of its best performers for the same reasons, it would raise hairs. Finally, a word to AC...while you work on your mental health why don't you and Mom also work on your vindictiveness?

I’m afraid AC might have Kyndall’s ear when KH should look no further than her teammate Shay Holle who came into the program much less heralded but has laid out a blueprint of how to get more minutes after hardly seeing the floor her freshman year. I’d hate to lose her but it will be her decision ultimately.

I’d like to think when AC “grows up” she’ll regret throwing a program under the bus no matter how much truth is in her claims. And I know we’re not supposed to question any of it, but considering what she’s said and how she’s handled it, it’s pretty hard not to. She’s kind of painted herself into a corner so I sure hope she has a good experience at Tech

I agree with so many of the comments made about AC's post but I am still shaking my head with disbelief. Ok she leaves in the middle of the season and her first post concerning her problems at Texas was a little alarming but I believe clearly related to lack of her playing time behind Rori. Rori was being touted by Vic as a future great and all American PG. Ok but when AC announced her possible transfer points and Stanford was on the list. I thought this girl is delusional or just padding her ego. This sent red flags and shivers up my spine. This last post really concerns me in that it shows outright true HATE and animosity for Texas and her experience there and the fact that she wanted to flame it out to the world that she was treated like this!! The more she talks the worse she sounds. I really hate she is going to Tech. This issue will be brought up every time we play them. I can just hear the announcers comment on the problems AC had at Texas. I would think the attention she has brought on herself with this vindictive hardened hate will be worse for her mental health than anything she could have done.

I want to make it clear that what I have said is not meant in any way to minimize Ashley’s pain. I’m truly sorry for that. BUT to say she was DESTROYED BY AN UNFIT ENVIRONMENT as were some teammates is serious SH—. IF it was so unfit, then WHY come back??? All we can do is form our own conclusions based on the evidence which simply doesn’t add up....

AC thought because she had been at UT for a year and worked hard (I have no doubt that she worked extremely hard) that the keys to the team should be handed to her. She got bumped by an All-Everything freshman... someone whose abilities AC should have been well aware of. End of story.

If anyone buys into this whole BS then they need not be a part of what we're building anyway. I also agree that Geno has it right. Let 'em go. More will come, more will go, more will come... etc, etc, etc.

I think she could have done a better job communicating her story without purposely dragging others through the mud. She said she re-wrote it a hundred times; makes you wonder what blurbs needed refinement:

- destroyed by an unfit environment
- the dark whole that I was stuck in while in Austin
- unwelcoming and harmful environments
- witnessed it do the same to my teammates
- relieve their own burdens in both unhealthy and dangerous ways

She's either been fake (on her social media) the whole time she was at Texas prior to leaving the program, or is bitter about things not turning out like she expected in her second season. Either way, her removing herself from the program is definitely best for all parties; we'll see how things turn out for her; I'll be shocked if she ends up finishing her college career at Tech.

Whatever. Why bother signing a bunch of Top 10 recruits if you intend to bury them on the bench? Doing them a disservice.

Which is why I don't really have a problem with it. The other highly touted players on the bench will eventually transfer out. At least you would think that they would.

South Carolina has become what Tennessee and UConn were for decades, in that they will continue to haul in and stockpile talent upon talent upon talent... much of which will either leave or never get developed due to lack of playing time. La Tech and Baylor to certain degrees were the same way.

The staffs are there to build the very best of the best team they can year in and year out. They don't care if highly-regarded recruits who weren't playing much leave, because they know more will be on the way.

Only when recruits and their families start recognizing the trend will it taper off. That typically takes quite a while. I don't like it... never did... I hate to see talent wasted, but it's the way it is.

Sucks for those freshman and upcoming sophomores. Kardoso will likely be impacted the most regarding playing time. They will bring in transfers but they will also lose some young players which is not what you want to do but I guess it doesn’t matter with the transfer portal these days.

Owusu could be a good fit as a one year player. Gamecocks pg just concluded her college career and next year’s projected pg starter will be a redshirt freshman coming off an injury, if I recall correctly. Anyway this website is notoriously unreliable. Appears to just speculate or repeat gossip.

Another reason why I respect Vic Schaefer so much because he has said multiple times he won’t bring in a player with one year of eligibility that will affect the development of his younger players.

I think that statement is HIGHLY dependent on the player. Certain talents propel you into that real “contender” status and as a fan of the program I would hope/expect he’d consider that option should the opportunity present itself.

I was sure hoping Vic might have a chance for Angel Reese. She would be a great fit for his system and she brings a nice average points per game with her. This transfer portal has really changed the complexion of college basketball. Maybe the NIL and Texas's influence could change her mind??

I think the exception comes in with players Jackson, Blackwell, Reese and those you know will fit in good with your system and also players who have more than 1 year of eligibility. Texas has that immediate need for those type of players. With South Carolina they don’t have those needs as they have talented players waiting to fill that role but you’re right it definitely depends on the player.

I too have noticed SC immediately jumps on "high profile" players even if they don't have a need for the player's position. I call it "player hoarding". Does Dawn even recruit anymore or just "play the portal"?
