2021 Recruiting - Football

This is from TFB

You may recall that former 4-star DB and FSU DB, Jaiden Woodbey recently entered the portal and after including Texas in his list of possible transfer destination, ultimately picked Boston College.

I recently spoke with someone close to Woodbey and was told the reason why Woodbey chose BC over Texas. Source told me that Jaiden himself said that he had Texas players telling him not to come there. Not as in they were trying to dissuade him from coming because they were afraid of competition but just more of the negative recruiting we’ve seen come from inside the program in the past.

If Herman is retained, this matter will need to be addressed somehow. It has cost Texas multiple players.

It happens to some degree at other schools but it’s excessive and too pervasive at Texas. It needs to be rooted out.
Nail in coffin

I laughed because I assume you just meant- 'another nail', not the 'final nail'. There have been plenty of other things I can point to that seemed to be to be the final nail but turned out to just be another nail.
Herman is like the psycho killer who keeps coming back to life after being stabbed, shot or having a spike driven into his chest. I wonder if his middle name is Jason?

I wonder what the Texas players told the portal dude. Herman's given in to all player demands this year, and even tried getting out in front of it by insulting the fans.

So are the Texas players saying he didn't do enough and don't like the fact that they have to stand around during the eyes, same way I have to sit through a speech by the CEO? Or are they coming from the other direction and saying that he didn't kick out the turds and so the season had issues from the start (doubtful - hard to imagine a current player wanting more discipline from a coach).

Either way, when your own players are telling others not to come here, it's as clear of a sign that the coach is terrible as any that you will get.

There's another possibility. The players with principle and commitment may doing this. It's a cancerous situation and they are saying so. Merely a possibility, perhaps not too likely.

I’m with you Duck, it would be significant to know the ‘what’. We all seem to have our opinions on why Herman has exceeded the limits but exactly what is the locker room mentality that would cause teammates to purposefully damage the team? It doesn’t get more significant than that. Football is hard and Herman brags on how hard they all work which always makes me think who wants to work that hard if you’re not winning.

It makes me wonder if the players think the University didnt do enough for BLM to satisfy them or is it Herman? Some of the malcontents have left but how many remain>? I guess there is noway we will have that answer until another incident rears its head. It will take a new coach to straighten this mess out. I just dont see that happening this year with what CDC has already said. I hope I am wrong.

Of all the mess we find ourselves involved with this player bad mouthing worried me the most. I mean there is NO recruiting you can do against that. I’d really like the inside scoop as to what it might be. Bugs the heck out of me cause those athletes are treated so well I would love to know the gripe.

and CDC is ok with him, unless you believe the Chip Kelly rumors...
I doubt CdC is ok with Herman, but finding someone who can get Texas back is difficult. Texas' last two HC experiments have failed horribly, and CdC doesn't want his pick to be the third in a row. Neither Kelly is right for Texas for various reasons including The one who has not excelled at the easiest school to enjoy success (ND) and the other cannot recruit to UCLA.

This all fell apart when the malcontents took over the locker room. Then every school in the country turned up the negative recruiting against Texas using the malcontents as their "evidence". Would you hesitate to commit to a school where even the band has gone rogue?

Consistently winning 10+ games a year with regular appearances in the CFP will take care of this.

One of the weirder aspects is that we still have a lot of guys coming back. Why do that if the locker room is acidic?

Below is the list I made earlier - we still dont know for sure about some seniors who may return. But the reality is we may have even more guys coming back (edit - can now add Black to the list)

Of these 3 groups, one group clearly thinks they can make an NFL roster. The second group is leaving bc they want to play and start. Of this portal group, it seems like a relatively low number to me -- just 3 portals when anyone can do it with no issues? Looking around the rest of the country, there is a record number of portal entries. On top of that, we already added one portal DB already and are abou to add another (see below). How do we explain all of this?
The third group begs the question, if our "locker room" is as bad as we are told, then why not take the free 'get out of jail card' and just go somewhere else?

Some part of this entire story does not make sense but I am not sure which part it is.

We lose to dreams of the NFL
Sam Cosmi
Joseph Ossai
Brennan Eagles
Caden Sterns
Chris Brown
TaQuon Graham

We lose to the Portal
Xavion Alford
Ja’Quinden Jackson
Daniel Carson

We get back
Tope Imade
Brenden Schooler
Denzel Okafor
Cade Brewer
Jacoby Jones
DeMarvion Overshown
D’Shawn Jamison
Josh Thompson

GT DB Jonathan Alexander (6'3,205) of KSU (from Ft Worth originally). He also played at couple smaller schools before ending up at K St. Has good size. Maybe another safety/LB hybrid
He opted out of the 2020 season after a positive covid test

So what's the deal with Keaontay? I don't see him in portal but also don't see him getting much playing time next year either.

Both 247 and IT said he was going to portal, but so far he has not submitted
Maybe he is waiting to see what happens with coach?
I think he will have a chance to be a better pro than college player - he has a good skill set (except for that one irritating issue that keeps coming up)

Occam's razor... what we really know is this: Herman is not developing players. He's losing to schools with lessor talent by all objective measures. Texas' players openly labeled the core values of the University as racist. Then add in the obvious problems with trying to persuade someone to come to Austin versus Ohio State and Alabama, two schools locked in on the CFB playoffs EVERY YEAR. Even OU is clearly a choice as they have won the Big 12 SIX YEARS IN A ROW. The last time we won was FOURTEEN YEARS AGO. And now, Jimbo has Aggy looking strong.

We know all of this. Rumors are not what we need to focus on. The open truth provides us with much understanding.

Perhaps keontay feels like he has to do something extra special when he has the ball and so he tries too hard takes too much of a risk, but if he gets into the right system where he feels like he can just go with the flow without trying to be Superman then maybe he wouldn't have his fumbling issues. Maybe he just needs to be coached up that way. Just speculating.

Just conjecture, but maybe it was Alford? Perhaps he realized we were looking to add DBs and tried to thwart it. But he failed so then he portaled himself.
We have already landed one DB and it looks like we are about to land another.

I wasn't calling you out. Just pointing out that the blame is pretty obvious for someone like me who has no insight at all except for your posts! :)

(1) I think everyone gets why he's leaving (assuming he actually does)
(2) But, agree, he can be better than he showed here. NFL teams like RBs with his combination so I would not be surprised to see him running in the league some day

Dont worry about it - that didnt even cross my mind. I am just thinking out loud about several things with regard to our team today -- we have lots of things going on all at once

On top of everything else, there is also this (from that Thamel/Yahoo article I posted above)

Why would the NFL have more appeal than a job like Texas or USC? Few jobs in sports promise to change as precipitously as college football coaching in the next 12 months. The absolute control that so many of these coaches coveted is now waning, with the transfer portal, one-time transfer exemption and Name Image and Likeness rules all shifting the power away from the coaches. This isn’t an endorsement or indictment of that shift, just acknowledging facts.
As college football coaching changes, Urban Meyer isn't only one who could jump to NFL

My 2 cents - "we" are in a good position to take advantage of these coming changes. it's something that should be to our benefit. Hopefully we dont blow it (like we did the last 2 coaching moves)

Totally agree with this. I've always thought the college game to be more difficult due to recruiting. I know I don't have the temperament to deal with the ego's and back-stabbing that goes on with the players as the string the schools along. I wouldn't last long because I'd probably mouth off about it.

BUT... throw me $5 million per year and maybe I'll read a book about Zen and smile my way through it all.

The NIL, which is really just product endorsement but sounds less cheap (no one is buying granny's needlepoint of a player's image) is going to be the biggest change in college ball since scholarship limits.

Boosters can just legally buy players onto a team, then next year, another team's boosters can up their bid and hire him away. Going to be wild ride.

But, as I was told over and over again, at least a staving 240 pound player will be able to afford a pizza, which apparently isn't currently happening, despite the team buffet table.

Agreed. That was my thought all along. The Boosters will buy all the likeness that a player sells of themselves. It just goes back to the highest bidder except now it's legal. What if Red McCombs contacted Ewers and said, I'll spend $5 million on T-shirts with your name on it. I'll give you 50% up front.
