2020 Recruiting - Football

Sputtering since 2010, the direction of the program changed dramatically with the hiring of Tom Herman, and I believe that the change began to be validated on the field last September 15th with the decisive victory over USC. Sitting in the stands before that game my buddy and I agreed that we had no idea what to expect. For me, the world of Longhorn football took a quantum leap that night.

We might not be in the same neighborhood as Alabama and Clemson yet, but I think we may be much closer than almost anyone believes. If I’m right, the Zack Evanses of the world will be looking at Texas very differently as this season progresses.

So intelligence levels are maintained, I know that, just picked the best two programs in the country and then mentioned that, as the best conference in college football, the $EC has a recruiting advantage with their record of putting players in the NFL.....OU is also rolling along with Ohio State (both also not in the $EC.....

You have to be an aggsy. That attitude is straight out the aggsy fish camp.

It was just 2 seasons ago that Texas dominated the Texas top 20. I'm talking 7 of the top 10 and 12 of the top 20.

Texas has 2 top 5 recruiting classes in a row. So give it up, some guys don't want to play at Texas, and some do. We might suck at Running back recruiting, but our QB recruiting is stellar. As is our WR LB and DB recruiting. Oline recruiting has gotten a lot better. Texas is in position to compete with every team in the country outside of Bama and Clemson. But with a little more time we will be on the same level as Bama and Clemson.

And there ya go....a little more time......which means a couple more seasons....regarding recruiting, it seems we're just a little behind the teams I mentioned. Nope, Bill, not an Aggie......I'm the 5 star 4 star guy....some here liked to attack me for not playing on a team so my points are invalid. Herman's just got to keep the mojo going...and we'll get there....
 
5-star CB Kelee Ringo from Scottsdale has confirmed he will be in for the big June 22 weekend

Ditto for 5-star RB Jase McClellan from Aledo (ou commit) -- will be an OV.
 
I suppose there's an undefined grey zone somewhere between bringing in a healthy dose of realism, and throwing a wet blanket over other folks' enthusiasm. This very thing seems to cause much consternation on these boards and similar sites.

I hope we win them all every year. Frankly, I sometimes enjoy drinking the kool aid. But, realistically, I see some weaknesses and lack of depth that concern me. I think we're "back"--which I define as the sort of team that wins around 10 games a year, is in the top 10, challenges for the conference title, and maybe gets to the playoff. We made the conference championship game and split with OU last year, after all. But we may be a few years and a few more very good recruiting classes away from Clemson and Bama's level.

Some comments on a few players from Sam Spiegelman who is the Texas/Louisiana regional guy for Rivals.

VERNON BROUGHTON--The Buzz: Broughton has toyed with quite a few different schools and eventually settled on a top six of Texas, Texas A&M, Ohio State, Alabama, LSU and Arkansas. The Rivals100 defensive lineman already took his official visit to Texas and there’s no doubt that the Longhorns have a hefty lead in Broughton’s recruitment. Arkansas made a strong impression on the four-star defensive lineman and Ohio State will gets its chance to sit down with the family later in June. We’ll see if the out-of-state schools can make up ground, but Texas has a sizable advantage.

QUENTIN JOHNSTON-- The Buzz: Johnston takes the humble approach in his recruitment, which is why he rarely gets on social media or posts photos from visits. This is shaping up to be a Red River battle for the newly minted Rivals100 wide receiver, who resides less than an hour outside of Austin. The Texas coaches have made Johnston feel very comfortable and are in a good position to land the state’s second-ranked pass-catcher.

PRINCE DORBAH--The Buzz: Dorbah has sliced his list of contenders to two — Texas and LSU — and a decision may be on the way. The Longhorns have been after the Highland Park four-star for some time, but LSU offered this spring and has since put the full-court press on the Dallas stud. Dorbah was at both team’s spring games and both staffs are actively pushing. Because of the long-lasting bond, Texas may hold a slight edge.

CHAD LINDBERG--The Buzz: Several major powers are in the mix for the Rivals100 tackle, most notably Texas, Texas A&M, Stanford, Georgia and LSU. Lindberg is also keeping Northwestern and Clemson in the fold. Lindberg has raved about the game atmosphere in Tiger Stadium and his relationship with Georgia offensive line coach Sam Pittman, as well as the degree he could walk away with in Palo Alto. However, Texas is a hometown favorite that has shown Lindberg he’s a priority in 2020

JAHARI ROGERS --The Buzz: Being an Oklahoma legacy, the Sooners were in a good spot early on with the new four-star. That momentum has since faded and opened up a door for Texas and Florida, and watch out for Notre Dame as well. Rogers has noted that he has a great bond with the Longhorns’ coaches, but don’t sleep on the Gators to make this a tight race down the stretch.

XAVION ALFORD--The Buzz: Alford was able to narrow his impressive offer sheet down to 10, but upon further review, we’re looking at LSU, Texas, Michigan and Texas A&M as the favorites here. The four-star safety has visited LSU and Texas the most this spring. He said the offer from the Wolverines was an eye-opener and he has connections to Texas A&M that can’t be ignored. This could several different ways, but I like the Longhorns’ chances.​

How many commits this month? I could see one or two more in June but they might push into July depending on timing for guys.

Next five commits, will more be on offense or defense? Next five if I had to pick possibilities will be some group of Jahari Rogers, Kitan Crawford, Bijan Robinson, Chris Thompson, and maybe Prince Dorbah.

Do you still have confidence that we’ll land Chad Lindberg? I think so. I think Texas has done everything they could and they've won the family over. Georgia concerns me a bit.
Isn’t Georgia full? They already have 3 tackles You would think, but I've been told they are still pushing hard. They are the only team that would really worry me for Lindberg.

Mike out of the 3 named how many do you think Texas lands? Vernon Broughton, Alfred Collins, Prince Dorbah. I still think they get 2 of 3 on that D-line group.

Is Jase really listening? I don’t think he been on campus but once this year I think so, but he's calculating and he won't do anything rash. I think it's likely he takes an OV

Who do You think is the one guy that if he was to commit, it would influence other players to give Texas a harder look? I think Ja'Quinden Jackson was one of those guys. I think Chris Thompson could be another.

What national position do you think Texas finishes at? I'd say top 8 is probably my pick with a ceiling of top 5 and a floor of top 15.​

So Tom Herman takes over for a failure of a coach and immediately gets Texas to a winning season and a bowl win.

Then he hands a top 3 class and dominates the state.

Then he takes Texas to a 10 win season and a major bowl win over a top 10 team.

Then he hands Texas another top 3 class.

Now he has Texas in position again for another top class.

Still not enough for you?

You might claim to be a Longhorn but you are an aggsy or the most unrealistic fan in the history of college football. Tom hasn't been flawless but he has Texas going the right direction. And he is doing it in a situation that Mack Brown never had to deal with. When was the last time there were so many OOS schools stealing away Texas talent? The answer would be back in the 80's when the SWC was a boat anchor around the Texas schools and teams like Notre Dame, Miami, FSU, Michigan and UCLA were walking away with all the top talent.

Herman is doing something that no other Texas coach has done, and that is recruiting the country. If top Texas talent wants to play in the SEC then go to Utah, Arizona, and California and get top kids that want to be here.

Bottom line is all the little arrows are pointing up and until proven otherwise, Tom Herman is the right guy to get Texas back.

Then you have no balls, that's pretty much all there is. If you are a Texas fan, then you have no balls so you chicken little around here hoping for someone to pay attention to you.

So which is it waldo? An aggsy troll, or a ball-less coward?

There is a third option and that is that you just want attention and will say anything to make others converse with you.

If I had to chose between Bijan Robinson and Jase I'm taking Bijan every time. Bijan's game is tailor made for the Big 12. He isn't a 20 carries a game guy but he is explosive and will touch the ball 12 to 15 times a game for about 100 to 150 per game.

I keep saying this. Beware of Aledo kids. Jase looks amazing in his film but he is surrounded by so much talent that is well coached you just can't tell how much is him and how much is the guys around him.

What I see from Jase is what we got from Ced Benson, a guy that will be a work horse and give you 85 to 110 a game on about 18 carries, but he isn't explosive nor is he a guy that pound the opponent like Ricky Williams. This means that DC's aren't going to fear him like they would Bijan. No fear means they won't game plan to stop him. I want someone that puts fear into the opposing DC, so much so they game plan to stop him and in turn open things up for the rest of the offense.

What is the point of this board but to converse about subjects. Not sure where your animosity comes from but in this case it's on you, brother. I'm lost as to where your position vs mine was that different to where you got that ticked off. A troll (I think) would say Texas sucks always has always will. Not sure where the ball-less coward thing comes from. I call it like I see it, man. I'm being polite here on this board because that's what the rules say. You should look 'em up. I'm all for Texas winning, am behind the team 100%. Was just comparing relatively speaking where Texas is vs the other programs mentioned. Didn't even have "aggsy" in the conversation. If you have a problem with that, then it's yours alone. Step off.

I agree with much of this^^post. I really hope we can get Robinson; just as I really hope we find a way to get Zach back on the trail to get in the fold. Our Running Backs coach has whiffed on a few 5 stars recently and that concerns me.

We need a great running back at UT to help us get back to the TOP. Another Heisman level talent to go with Earl and Ricky!! :hookem2:
 
Here is what Super K of TFB says about the 4 OVs this weekend --

Prince Dorbah – Dorbah, I believe, still has his LSU visit scheduled for next weekend. So, this may be the last time Dorbah is on campus before he makes a decision. He’s eyeing a summer decision. My guess is to look for something no later than July. Would obviously be great if they could seal him up this weekend and ask him to team up with J Jackson and start building this class.

Hudson Card – Card says he will take his official visit this weekend. Can’t hurt having him on campus to recruit three of the top players in the country.

Lathan Ransom – I think Texas has a punchers chance here and I would not have said that a couple weeks ago before his unofficial visit. I’d make the priority here, coach Herman spending as much time with Ransom and his family as possible. He’s noted to me that he has a strong relationship with coach O at LSU and coach Day at Ohio State. I believe that matters to him.

Jase McClellan – Really don’t know how much of a chance Texas has in this one. Again, every time I’ve spoken to Jase, he seemed solid to OU. But anytime you have an in-state kid, there’s a big card to play there. The fact that he’s taking an OV says something. In the past when he’d visit Texas, it always seemed like he was just going along for the ride with a friend. This is intentional. We’ll see what it means, if anything, after the visit.​

" .... With the Longhorns securing commitments from Duncanville QB Ja’Quinden Jackson and Dallas (Skyline) WR Quaydarius Davis, a lot of attention and credit has been given to Assistant WR Coach Ra’Shaad Samples, and rightfully so.

Similar to Texas Director of Recruiting Bryan Carrington, Samples is very young with a ton of energy, he’s disarming and personable, he’s a minority coach in a sport that has flush with minority athletes, and he has a great reputation in the city that he is from. Without Samples on staff, Texas doesn’t have commitments from the aforementioned young men.

In 2018, it was Carrington that had a tremendous influence on a class that was dominated by the Longhorns in-state with an influx of top talent hailing from the Houston-area, where Carrington is from. It is very plausible that Texas does not land all of Jalen Green, Anthony Cook, D’Shawn Jamison, Brennan Eagles, Joseph Ossai, and Malcolm Epps without Carrington’s presence on staff.

Texas has a bit of a dynamic duo brewing and they have roots in the two of the most fertile recruiting grounds in the country. What Texas has done with Samples makes me wonder if it is something that we will see become more common in major College Football....."​

This list has some great talent. I think my top three hopefuls are: Bijan, tunmise, and Clayton, with Honorable mention to kelee and Johnny- I know I can't believe they are Honorable mention!:hookem3:

If you're gonna anoint the $EC as the best conference, you better use an *. Only playing 8 conference games and continuously scheduling FCS teams are signs of weakness to me.

" ..... What is the status on defensive line recruiting? Vernon Broughton is still the big fish, who is OV’ing to Ohio State this weekend and Texas A&M next weekend. Once those wrap up, it’ll be interesting to see the Cy-Ridge defensive lineman’s next move. His sister’s recruitment will be something to follow. Broughton recently visited LSU but sources there don't think they did enough. He didn't have that look in his eye. Texas is still most likely but nobody is taking him for granted and the staff is pulling out all the stops.

Alfred Collins is hard to read. Doesn’t say much, and he knows Texas, A&M, and Alabama all want him. The feeling is he'll stick closer to home and UT is doing a fine job of recruiting him but nobody knows exactly what he's thinking....

What's going on with offensive line recruiting? Andrej Karic from Southlake Carroll is a take. You can find better high school offensive linemen than him but the list of guys the staff feels will be better in college is pretty short. Texas is still recruiting Chad Lindberg, of course, but they’re taking all precautions since the supposed UT lean might not be leaning burnt orange as much as he was previously. They still like Nate Anderson and Herb Hand is still in contact but from our vantage they're waiting to see how Lindberg/Karic plays out."

RB Jase McClellan did make it to Austin for his OV

And I can tell you the ou people are definitely disturbed by this, so maybe it really does have legs?
