2020 Recruiting - Football

OU has been taking a large share of north Texas HS talent for 70 straight years; no point in acting like Herman or anyone else is going to wave a magic wand and make it stop.
Obviously it's not going to stop completely - but I would like to see Texas get the top ones they want and not lose them to ou. I sincerely hope Tom can make that happen.

Note I said "slow down" the exodus. Right now Texas has the commitment of 2 of the top players from the DFW area (although the one from Bishop Dunne has to be considered suspect due to the level of competition he played against - nothing against the player he could only play against who was on the schedule).

I count three, considering Prosper as part of the DFW area. It's still early in the 2020 recruiting cycle, but 3 of 6 of our current commitments are from DFW. A decent, though not spectacular, start in DFW as Tom and staff appear to be working it hard these days.

I forgot about the Prosper player so 3 is correct.

"Fast-rising" 4-star(per 247) 2020 DE Van Fillinger (6'3,255) from Utah (orig from Detroit) - #3 in state.

My take: Strong bull rush, sheds blockers well, dogged pursuit, practically lives in opponents' backfields, blocks punts from the DL position (you don't see that too often). The film shows him playing as much inside as at end--looks well suited to a traditional 3-4 DE.

Apparently you guys have forgotten how Mack Brown locked down Texas for quite a few years. There are too many good players for Texas to take them all but Charlie Strong put a serious dent on the Longhorns and only winning will fix that. Texas has had a strong class the last 2 years but that has been bolstered by out of state kids. It seems like we are late to the party on lots of in state kids. OU , LSU & TAMU have been much more aggressive & successful with recruiting the Texas kids. TAMU is the new buzz with Jimbo, OU was steady when we fell on the sword with Charlie Strong & LSU has certainly done well recruiting the golden triangle. Tom appears to have the program headed in he right direction but they must win this year to change the perception, beat blowu again and win the Big12.

I think Tom has officially lost his grip on Houston, but he has time to prove me wrong.
Well some years we will recruit well in some areas and not well in other areas. It's almost cyclical but mostly orbitrary. Tom will keep us winning and we will get our good recruits. I believe that '21 is going to be a great year of recruiting for the good guys- top 3 again...has ty Jordan committed anywhere.,just wondering.

this isn't a knock on Mack, this is trying to be fair to Charlie. I have 2 names that chap my hide every time people act like Mack did no wrong...Adrian Peterson and Tommie Harris. ALL WORLD players. Mack did NOT lock down Texas.

Mack's best years were 99 , 00 01 and 02, that was when he really locked down the state. Then Stoops took over for a little while, Fran had a couple good years as well. After 02 Mack a couple years where he dominated the state but then he had years where stoops kicked his butt.

No one is going to consistently lock down the state. Herman has had a good run the last couple of years, but he needs to win and prove he can win the conference before he will really prove he can take talent to the next level. The reason we aren't getting some of this top talent is we need to prove we can win and put kids in the NFL as high draft picks. We do that then the talent will come.

quit panicking about about Herman and recruiting. What bull ****. The guy has had excellent classes every real class he's recruited. He started from crap, Texas may not win much next year but come the following year and then on the game is on.

It's about 90% QB in college football and he has studs now and in the ranks. You take away Vince and Colt from those teams and they win maybe 8-9 games.

Sounds like the recruitment of DE Princely Umanmielen (Manor) has a long way to go. He recently said aggy is his "slight leader." And ou thinks they are in good shape too (see below from an ou mod)
He will be in Austin for the big June 22 weekend

If Charlie can pull a top 10 class after coming to a school with no realistic in state ties and then getting flack for going out of state to recruit and 5 win seasons I think Herman will do just fine. Especially after they find a way to get Samples out recruiting DFW

27 players from the 2005 team played in the NFL. At least 15 from the 2009 team played in the NFL by my quick count.

Collins has the sort of tall and lean build that strength and conditioning coaches love to work with. He's got the frame, he's new to football, and will put some meat on the bones in a good S&C program. Hope we get him.

We keep throwing a wider net for DLs
2020 DE Riyad Wilmot (6'3,248) from Fort Lauderdale wil be in for the big June 22 weekend

Seems like so, assuming this is a result on our top targets not going as planned.

At some point, Herman is going to have no choice but to address the issue of his under performing position recruiters. While we do have some good-to-great recruiters (as indicated by back-to-back top 3 classes), we also still have a couple who are seriously lacking. To his credit, Herman recognized and addressed his staff OL deficiency pretty quick, which was great. But he has stubbornly let professional malpractice sloth forth at a couple of other positions. I just cant see this persisting much longer - we are losing in-state guys who wanted to come to Texas. It cant be allowed to go on like this.

Agree, Giles and Drayton do a great job of developing talent, but at some point you have to start closing.

The problem is that Giles and Drayton are such fantastic coaches you can't let them go. Maybe both should become Assistant Athletic Directors and make Samples the Dline Caoch and Beaty the RB coach. That gets these two on the road talking to players and Drayton and Giles coaching up the players like they do best.

One Sugar Bowl win doesn't equate to what Alabama, Clemson and other $EC teams have to show..... Best conference, solid path to NFL, etc etc. Winning makes recruiting easier, and OU's won 46 games in 4 years. We're not there yet, and it'll take a couple more 9-10 win seasons plus a conference title and major bowl wins to make these youngsters look at us differently. It may be a ploy, but Zach Evans didn't even list us in his top 5.....a year or so ago, not one Rivals top 10 player from Texas committed to a Texas school. I think OU got ONE of the top 10.....Texas is the flagship university of this state. Winning will cure all.....but Texas has to get back to winning, like OU is winning....

I agree with your sentiment.

One minor point: not to nitpick, but Clemson is in the ACC.
