2020 Presidential Election: let the jockeying commence

You are letting your TDS cloud your brain.
Please get the facts. They are out there.
The SS funds were not lined in the 2021 approved budget . The budget of SS is 1.5 million Do you have any idea how many items are in the DOD budget that is part of the entire budget?
Do you really think this is something Trump would be asked about and approved or is this just a way to show your anti Trump cred?
The shutdown was announced by a Lt Col. but we need to find out who omitted Stars and Stripes funds from budget

All I said that if this true he is walking back because of pissing off his base. He was done this time and time again. It isn't my distain for Trump its fact.

If I understand what happened the funds for the Stars and Stripes were not listed in the 2021 budget. Did someone at the DOD decide not to fund SS anymore? Doesn't seem likely. More likely an oversight. It is after all only 1,5 mil and seems automatic after 150 or so yrs.
What is funny is how all the TDS haters jumped on it to try to blame Trump.

It wasn't an oversight. There was an affirmative order for it to shutdown.

Yep. Obama will have no blame for the spying on Trump's campaign, yet hysteria ensues because Trump micro manages the process of this budget as it is happening, supposedly.

What a crock of ****, yet again.

If John McCain could have used his right arm he should have punch this douche right square in the mouth.

Nope, they were best buddies. McCain would kiss the *** of anyone who could help his image.

I say this as a veteran and a combat solider. John McCain was a horrible Senator, and by most accounts, a terrible person.

He abandoned his wife after he returned from Vietnam, in favor of a rich heiress who could finance his entry into politics.

He traded influence for money in the Keating 5 S&L scandal.

He ran a terrible campaign for the R nomination in 2000, then spent the next 8 years being bitter that Republican primary voters didn't want him to run, knowing what a loser he would be.

He craved the love of the media, trading backstabbing quotes about President Bush to them for scraps of praise.

He ran the worst campaign for President I remember in my 40 years of watching them. Mondale, Dukakis, even Dole ran better campaigns than McCain. He had the bizarre notion of wanting to pick a member of the other party for his VP (Joe Lieberman), who was his friend, though they had, allegedly, drastically different views on domestic policy, and was resentful when his advisors told him that was not going to work as a pick.

By the end of the 2008 race, his campaign consisted of staffers who competed with each other for the worst, most back stabbing quotes they could plant with the media in return for not being personally blamed for the putrid state of that organization.

He was called crazy, insane, a war criminal, a scarred little dwarf of a man by the media during the election, when it was technically possible he could have won. Then after the election did he hold a grudge against them - no sir, it was just fun and games. He crawled back to be in their good graces.

It takes a special type of insecure, craven, empty vessel to need the love of those who you know hate you. John McCain was that type of man.

He called the Tea Party, as close to a grass roots conservative movement that his country has seen, "hobbits" and other names, again to curry favor with the media.

He and his staff peddled the Russian Dossier, a paid for collection of lies by Hillary Clinton, to the FBI and media to launder it as a legitimate information source.

He ran for office in 2016 promising to vote against Obamacare, only to stab his voters in the back and preserve a large chunk of it, again in return for media love.

While suffering from terminal brain cancer, and unable to fulfill his duties as Senator, he selflessly stayed in office so that he could die as a sitting Senator with all the pomp and circumstance that comes with it.

As a final petty insult, he forbid Sarah Palin from attending his funeral, his running mate who never had anything but a kind word to say about him, despite the slandering she took from his staff. Again, for media love.

John McCain was the biggest piece of **** I've ever had the misfortune to vote for. Glad he's dead, and wish he'd died in 2006 or so, such I would not have voted for him.

Let me tell you something - being a veteran, as a veteran, does not give you a lifetime pass for your behavior. You served your country in time of war and peace, and are to be commended for that. You should be judged for what you do with the rest of your life the same as anyone else.

Not to mention, although you sort of did about his lousy campaign, that he disparaged Trump more after he became POTUS than he did campaigning against Obama. As you said, all to curry favor with the media. Shows how stupid he really was to think they would admire that.

Mr D
I was suggesting SS being left out of the DOD budget Could have been an oversight.
You know how massive the DOD budget is and 1.5 mil isnt even a rounding error on one line item.
But as it turns out the DOD did make the decision. It makes sense in today 's 24/7 internet world . I wonder how many active duty troops etc read it?
The other question is did someone from DOD inform POTUS.Hard to think they inform him of every item in the DOD budget. Did anyone inform Congress who had to approve it?

This has turned about to be much ado about nothing except a chance to get a dig in at Trump

Best post I've seen on west mall. I served as well, McCain over time became the poster boy for The Swamp.

I 1000% agree....I have done 8 combat tours and to me that does not matter. My tours are just a small fraction of my life. I want to be judged as a grandfather, dad and husband first.

The odds of it being an oversight are pretty much nil. Yes, their budget is tiny compared to the overall defense budget. However, budget writers don't make these line items up out of their heads according to memory. They start with last year's budget and line items and fill in new numbers. Furthermore, if it had been an oversight, the Pentagon wouldn't have assumed it and issued an order. They would have called the budget writers and said, "hey dumbasses, put the Stars and Stripes funding back in there."

The order was issued because somebody with a lot of power wanted it shutdown and issued an order. Any other explanation is as implausible as Kamala Harris saying, "I didn't know that was Willie Brown's junk." Who was that person? Maybe it was Trump. Maybe it was somebody else, but it was somebody, and it was intentional.

Lots of people read it. Printed copies are in pretty much every military waiting room. They also publish online, and the articles are frequently shared to social media groups that are followed by thousands and even tens of thousands of military personnel and their family members.

I don't think anybody would tell you that S and S is some great publication. It's ok, but what's nice about it is that it's geared toward the military and DoD personnel. It covers stuff that affects them and covers stories in their local areas in English.

For example, consider this article. It's about overseas post offices taking handwritten customs forms. Would other media outlets cover this? No, because who gives a crap? If you're overseas and use the APO system, you do care about it.

So you think POTUS sits down and draws up the military budget?

I didn't say that. I said that the DoD ordered the shutdown of Stars and Stripes. The POTUS is the head of the DoD as he is the head of the entire executive branch. If the order was issued against the wishes of the POTUS (as you and other Trump apologists suggest), the Administration should identify and fire that person immediately.

Mr D
What did Trump do when he found out?
Do you sincerely think someone from the DOD apprised him of this beforehand?

You do realize this is intended to turn military members away from him just as the fake story of him calling WWI Marines losers.

Right. Normally level headed Mr. Deez said it was a stupid move by Trump and is now doing what he says Trump did, which was walk back eliminating S&S. It is unreasonable to think that Trump would be involved directly with that sort of task and like you said, when he found out about it, he said it wasn't going to happen.

A nothing burger that the media is running with. But, we are just Trump apologists, even though every story like this the last 4 years has turned out to be BS.

I could very well be wrong. It's possible that some rogue officer ordered this within the DoD. However, if that's true, it should be very easy to identify that person and remove him. It would not just happen anonymously.

I know you guys will do anything not to think Trump has done something stupid, but your explanations simply aren't plausible.

Let's say he did it. Ticked off a lot of people. Unlike most in DC or anywhere else, he took that and reversed his decision. Solved except that the media just can't let it go.

Good for him if he reversed himself. I don't have a problem with him doing that. To me, changing course when you've obviously made the wrong call is a good thing. I'm just not willing to ******** and play stupid about it just because it might be politically expedient.

I ask again Mr D
Do you sincerely think Trump knew about this before?

Yes, I think he did. I think he made a rash decision, saw the blowback from a constituency that he needs, and then reversed his decision. Maybe he was reading S and S while he was taking a dump and saw an article he didn't like. Who knows what prompted it? But I don't think some rogue official in DoD ordered it on his own. Far too easy to get caught.

Mr D
Use some common sense on this one. The DOD budget is 704.5 Billion. Do you have any idea how many pages that would be? How many pages the entire budge would be?
The Comptroller And Esper announced in mid Feb they were not including money for the SS in the 2021 budget. Those funds are 35% of SS operating costs.
Do you sincerely think something that was 0.000022% of budget is something Trump would have known about?
In February, the Pentagon released a $705.4 billion fiscal year 2021 budget that included a proposed cut to funding for Stars and Stripes. Esper told reporters that the money would be used for “higher-priority issues,” like purchasing modern weapons.

“We have essentially decided coming into the modern age that newspaper is probably not the best way we communicate any longer,” Elaine McCusker, the Pentagon’s acting comptroller, said at the time.

The story is falling apart, folks.

And, once again, this whole Atlantic "story" happened 2 years ago, right? Yet again, when the timing is right, they bring it out now. If it was so terrible and true, why did these sources wait until now? And then the S and S thing conveniently happens. Amazing that anyone with intellect can believe this is not all orchestrated by the Swamp.

Like hic pointed out it is funny that there are 2 Trump is anti military stories making the rounds of media. Why is that?
One a piddlyass story that broke in mid Feb. Was there a big outcry by the military back then? Or anytime since. Now the the news is Trump knew about something that was a miniscule part of a huge budget and only now is walking it back
The question for me is why would anyone allege that except to try to hurt Trump.

The other a WWI Marine Memorial in France story is even sketchier and still MSM won't let it go.
