2019 Recruiting - Football

From a 247 West Coast site on Bru McCoy...

"Texas WR coach Drew Mehringer just left the McCoy home after a four hour visit. Bru probably has a closer relationship with Mehringer than any other coach recruiting him and the entire family really likes him a lot. I was told the visit was a home run and the interest in UT remains extremely high right now. Mehringer will be back in next Tuesday with Tom Herman."

--------------------
But, at about the same time .....

that's what I'm worried about...

Wish the young man the best.
But in my opinion we can be very selective at this position.
Leave room for Bru, and I’ll call it early Garrett.
Won’t surprise me if urban Liar has his intentions leaked of stepping away, again.
If only I could predict scores

TFB on Sanders -- ..

RB Trey Sanders was very fond of former Alabama OC Mike Locksley (Kai's father). With Locksley being re-hired by Maryland this week, that supposedly leaves a "sizable" window for Florida and Texas to make a bigger move with him.

Couple of JUCO OLs we are after OT Myron Cunningham (Iowa Central CC) probably the top of the list
Also, Hand is in Calif looking at JUCO OL Jay Williams -- no offer yet but maybe after the visit

JUCO OL Myron Cunningham will OV to Texas Dec 14

The next Calvin Anderson?

Grad transfer OT Tommy Kennedy (6'5,290) with a 3.0 GPA at Butler is getting a lot of run now. He played LT. Hand spoke to yesterday and will see him today and is trying to set up a visit

He is #74 (they dont have the little circles like HUDL does)

OB says commit Peyton Powell (Odessa Permian) will be take an OV to Baylor this weekend. Also talking to Texas Tech.
There is an idea out there that our staff thinks it can parlay the Sugar Bowl invite into some higher ranked recruits. We will see.

IT says Oregon doesn’t feel confident with regard to JUCO LB Caleb Johnson. If we do land him, expect him to be playing next season.

A couple of quotes from Bru McCoy (via Texas 247) after our in-home:

"Coach Mehringer is awesome. I’m closer to him than any other coach by far, it’s not even close. He’s young and and such a cool dude. He told me that of course he wants me at Texas but no matter where I go, he’s going to support me and we’re going to stay in touch all though college. I know a lot of coaches say that but with him, I believe it.
* * *
“They have a specific plan in place for me. Right now, it looks like both Lil’Jordan Humphrey and Collin Johnson could leave early for the Draft. Humphrey really blew up this year and plays the X receiver, which is where they want me to come in and play."

“They said they really don’t have anyone else on the roster who can play that position and that’s their key spot in the offense. Coach Mehringer said if I didn’t come in, they would probably not even utilize that position in the offense because there is no one else who could play that spot."

“They showed me how perfect I fit in there and obviously there is nothing guaranteed but I would have a great chance to come in and make an immediate impact there and that’s huge....."

On USC --

“I saw they just hired Kliff Kingsbury and I’m really excited about that. I’ve heard nothing but great things about him as a person and I’m excited to meet him. USC was supposed to come in this week for a home visit but they pushed it back so they could come to my game and coach Kingsbury is supposed to be there as well."

“I know a lot about his offense and how they run it and if you’re a wide receiver, you can’t help but be excited. They play four wide receivers and rotate six and seven guys so you’re going to get playing time. I love the up tempo, full spread offense, it’s exactly what we have been doing at Mater Dei the last three years and I know JT (Daniels, USC QB) is super excited to play in this system too. It fits him perfectly."

“Watching the old USC offense and seeing all the two wide receivers sets on 3rd and long was so frustrating. When you have as many athletes as USC does, you have to use them. ...."

Craig Naivar just did his in-home with Catalon ( Mansfield Legacy). He was supposed to commit at the UA game in early Jan, but has now pushed the timing back.

Inside Texas says "This one has been trending Arkansas for awhile, but Texas keeps swinging" And "the Horned Frogs are in this as much as anyone."

“It was good, real good. We really enjoyed it. I love coach Naivar. He keeps it '100' with me and keeps up with me on a daily basis. We have a great relationship.”

“I'm taking more time because it’s a 40-year decision, not four-year decision."

Not liking his words about CJ and LJH.

Think about it this way -- Imagine YOU were the staff assistant whose job it was to get him committed, what would you be saying to him about this?

A couple weeks ago, many of us thought we would be losing one or maybe even both of them. We may still.
It seems like as of now, both LJH and CJ are going to wait and see what their draft grades are. There has been some discussion of letting LJH play outside next season to get more film for the NFL. We could do that since both Jake and Whittington can play slot (plus we have Moore already).

And last, a blast from the past -- a Higgybear sighting

We will in-home with WR Elijah Higgins (Austin Bowie) this week.

Texas 247 is saying his recruitment looks like it will come down to the Stanford admissions process. Given that, he may not be signed as of signing day.

OB says commit Peyton Powell (Odessa Permian) will be take an OV to Baylor this weekend. Also talking to Texas Tech......

Texas247 says the story here is that one of Powell's high school teammates is visiting BU and Powell may go with him.
