2018 Roster

Most days I believe Gary Johnson is the most influential/essential player we have on the roster as far as culture goes.

I agree. What stands out to me about GJ, aside from his obvious talent, is a sense of gratitude to be where he is and a strong work ethic. In other words, the polar opposite of entitlement.

Agree. Defense is 80% effort and desire; need to find 10 more with the same attitude.

I think Ingram will be the first to start on offense, but I expect Rising to start by OU. I expect to see a lot of Woodard, Eagles, Foster, Sterns, Coburn, Green as the season progresses.

Everyone, including myself, seems to discount Thompson, but the kid has stayed true to is commitment against extreme pressure in the Dust Bowl. I was hoping he could redshirt and learn the system, but he could be the darkhorse of this class.

How sweet would it be for him to beat OU?

This sounds about right...after all we have a real steak going on starting true Freshmen QB's...a real problem for the Horns seems to be gaining some real experience at the QB position.

2018 ?
2017 Ehlinger
2016 Buechele
2015 Heard
2014 Swoopes (Think he was a RS Freshman)

Quote on how Mikey Grandy looks so far --

"Grandy is a huge human being.
He looks like an NFL guard right now.
He needs to be an early contributor”

I'm happy we have such talented freshmen, but I hope none of them start until around mid-October. My real hope is we can red shirt 25 of them.

I'm hoping for/expecting a productive battle between Leitao and Brewer at tight end. I believe Brewer was about to break out a little prior to injury.

Love the tight end position and can't wait to see it working for us

They are going to get plenty of chances. The Herman preferred offense keeps one on the field most of the time

And it was not my intent to "discount" the other tight end options. Beck's experience, Epps' huge upside/potential, and Cummins' whom obviously the coaches must see potential in all - all have a shot to contribute, though wouldn't surprise to see Epps redshirt.

"We were soft at some spots on the DL"

Poona should have been at the combine. I expect him to have success in the NFL. I'm sure those scouts know a lot more than me, but they are sometimes wrong.
Poona has a good motor and is a baller...will be one of if not the most missed starter(s) this upcoming season for us unless someone really steps up... hard shoes to fill.

I heard somewhere that it was probably a good thing Poona didn't go to combine.
His size just doesn't match up in that environment.
Compared him to Casey Hampton.
Poona will be in the NFL next season.

So Malik thinks we were soft along the DL? Isn't this the guy who got benched for his lack of effort? Isn't he the guy who seemed to have trouble defeating blocks?
I guess he should know what "soft" is.

I kind of thought it sounded like he was looking to the DL to give him the opportunity to be better.

Scholarship QBs

Casey Thompson has been hitting the weights! I’m looking forward to the competition this spring. Still a lot of youth but we may have solid depth beginning here.

Boo looks bigger to me too.

Sure hope this group bonds and stays together. Only one can start but I remember Major went from 3rd team to starter in the blink of an eye due to freak injuries.

The dime is our base defense now
Three of the true freshmen DBs on campus now are expected to be playing in it -- Anthony Cook (who has added muscle), BJ Foster and Caden Sterns.

The Center position is still up in the air
Shackelford has competition. So far, we have tried Elijah Rodriguez, Denzel Okafor, and Derek Kerstetter there.
If we sign Calvin Anderson (something we will learn shortly) then there is a good chance Sam Cosmi kicks out to RT (for the one year we would have Anderson)
If so, then Kerstetter would be freed to start at center

I'd be ok having shack and ker in the middle. that sounds like we aren't hemorrhaging and in dire need of OL. that sounds like normal depth.

IT saying neither Chris Nelson and Ed Freeman will be on roster come August
Freeman we knew about
Nelson is one I was hoping would stick it out
Bizarre hearing that about Chris Nelson. He was basically a shoe in to be a starter and certainly has a shot at the NFL. Why would he transfer for his last season? Would certainly like to know the detail in that one.
