2018 Roster

Sabre is right. HC is boss - you play his game. Its about the TEAM - not you.

Your personal respect is earned on the field.

Ask any kid that played for DKR. They ALL respected him, all feared him on some level, most loved him as a coach that challenged to be them better.
This is all true, and he certainly earned it on the field but if Herman was willing to move merihinger to outside wr coach in efforts to hold on to rhm and ljh clearly the players weren’t the problem.

I wasn’t around when dkr was but from what I hear this coaching staff doesn’t come close as of yet so I would imagine the level of respect he commanded hasn’t been earned yet by Herman and his staff by all players judging by the mass exodus taking place.

judging by the mass exodus taking place
Looking from outside it does appear that Herman has some issues with his offensive staff. Is this because the staff doesn't understand Herman's offense or there really isn't an offense plan? Who knows. However the "mass exodus" is almost all Strong's recruits who did not buy into the program. Happens with all college coaching changes. After 3 years of Strong's efforts and 1 year of Herman's effort it is clear that a majority of Strong's recruits never should have been recruited by Texas.

I think times have changed since Mack started at Texas and kids who are 3-star kind of recruits now feel more a sense of entitlement as to playing time and scheme and what works best for them. I don't think of this as an indictment of Herman as it is the system and just college sports in general.

Looking at the 1997-99 rosters and the eventual turnover for several guys, it seems like the turnover wasn't that bad, and a lot of them left for non-football reasons instead of scheme or whatever. Plus, there wasn't twitter or Instagram around for the kids to publicly vent about it either.

David Aaron
Dustin Armstrong
Greg Cicero (victim of Applewhite's greatness)
Will Goodloe
Levar Jenkins
Cedric Mitchell
Josh Spoerl
Josh Taft (baseball?)

In all, if you discount the draft and who's entering it, we're having similar turnover issues now. Maybe it's just poor retention of star athletes.

Another thing to consider is the whole graduate early and grad transfer phenomenon that I think the NCAA will eventually start to rein back in. Originally it seemed like a reward for student athletes who stayed in school and performed well enough to want to continue going, but since Russell Wilson, more and more kids seems to be getting the advice to strike while the iron's hot. Not including the draft, it looks like we're losing 3-4 due to graduation, which is "strange" by old standards of just finishing out your eligibility.

I wouldn’t go that far because most of these kids were wanted by plenty of other high profile schools but charlie & co just didn’t develop anybody

A snippet from IT on practices and the EEs

QB Cameron Rising: He's been mistaken for a tight end a couple of times because of his size. He's a thick kid at 6-foot-2, 230 pounds.

LB Ayodele Adeoye: I was interested to hear how he moved during agility drills. I heard he looks pretty good and moves well, though he needs to come under control. That will happen as he gets more reps in the drill. The important aspect is he doesn't appear to be lacking in foot quickness and mobility.

CB Anthony Cook: His slight frame has caught the attention of some but so too have his quick feet. Don't worry about that frame. He'll be physically ready to go come August.

DB's BJ Foster and Caden Sterns: Hard workers in the weight room and very fluid in field drills. Both have determined attitudes.

---------------

More from TFB --

CB, Anthony Cook. Cook is one of the more polished young DBs and has great short area quickness but speed has been questioned. I asked a source about what he’s looked so far, “he’s been impressive. Runs better than expected and you’re not going to outwork him”.

.... fom a physical standpoint, Cam Rising looks exceptional…bigger than Ehlinger. Have heard Rising is throwing the ball around but is still not planting hard on the leg he injured this past season.

Great news, the DB group is for real

Speculation on the WR lineup for Spring

With Reggie Hemphill-Mapps moving on (he's still in school but he isn't participating in any team activities) the slot position will be Lil'Jordan Humphrey and Jerrod Heard. Maybe Davion Curtis as well

John Burt is one of the outside positions, along with Curtis who will play both inside and out

Collin Johnson is the other outside position, with Brennan Eagles (on campus now) working behind him.

Two other guys who, like Curtis, will be tried both inside and out are - Jordan Pouncey (who the staff likes) and Al'Vonte Woodard (who is also a possible RS).

Sounds like we are not making any plans for Devin Duvernay

Nash,

It's no wonder you hardly knew him, unless you are one of our assistant coaches, who refused to use his size advantage (6'6" against 5'10") plus his 38" vertical leap. You would never want to use his athleticism against a freshman DB, who every other team exploited. Kid will be a killer at the next level with coaches that recognize his talent and have a QB that can read a defense.

Chip Brown, now and then --

Now --
I think Shane loves being at Texas for a lot of reasons. So I'll be surprised if he packs and leaves. Herman will give a fair shot to anyone who can lead the offense to points consistently in an efficient way.

Then (just before the first ever early signing period) --
According to sources, Buechele’s parents aren’t crazy about the way Herman is running the program - even thinking Shane would be better off playing baseball. According to sources, Steve Buechele has told other parents of players the way the coaches are coming down so hard on the players with everything from constantly having to pass hydration tests to cleaning the weight room at 4:30 am as punishment to eating burnt breakfasts for being on the losing team at practice, he doesn’t think players are enjoying the game they love - especially when the team is 6-6.

According to sources, Steve Buechele, a bench coach with the Texas Rangers, has told other parents UT coaches are running the program harder and with less feeling than the Rangers run spring training - adding the Rangers get paid, while UT football players don’t.

This stuff is absolutely rich. I wouldn't know Chip Brown if he knocked on my door and probably wouldn't let him in. This BS about 'love' and the 'program caring' is really good fodder for the Hollywood group. Coach Royal was as strict and unbending as any person on earth. Coach Campbell was absolutely scary. Virtually everybody who played for either would have crossed Guadalupe to the other side if they saw them coming. But fair, you bet. Anybody would have done anything for either. These empowered 'darlings' in today's touchy-feely world are too much. Bomar ring a familiar note? What's supposed to happen? There are only 11 positions on each side. Somebody, definitionally, isn't going to get the playing time they imagine they are entitled to. Get a grip. Play hard, play hurt (not dangerously, but every day everybody hurts a lot), or Don't. SImple as that. Just don't play. It isn't mandatory.

Bomar was kicked off the team for the Big Red scandal. How does that relate to players transferring due to lack of playing time?

OB says Devin and Donovan Duvernay are "not leaving Texas anytime soon."
Both are participating in winter conditioning and are supposed to participate in spring practice. Things can always change but our staff does not think they will leave anytime soon.

Here are some Ojomo quotes, a guy who does not do many interviews. BTW, in Nigeria they use the British school system so he started school two years earlier than kids do in America.

“It feels god. I’m finally happy to get to work, workout and get better, get ready to compete for possibly a starting position, become a better player. I always pride myself on improving every single year I play football, always want to improve my play.”

“I didn’t really know until the end. To be frankly honest with you, it was between OU, Oregon and Texas. I really loved all three places, really saw a future at all three. They were great places, great coaches, amazing facilities. It was a heart-breaking decision because they were all great places.

“I actually decided on Monday. I just felt a feeling from God. It just felt like the right place to go. My family is really religious, and it just felt like the best fit.”

“I didn’t have that crazy of a junior year. That’s number one. I had a good junior year, but became a more consistent player (as a senior). My senior year tape came out kind of late. Also, I feel people feel connected to people they’ve known for a long time. I feel my tape speaks for myself. I was playing at 275 so it’s not much different than what I am now.”

Awesome, that’s a big-time save (with Devin mainly)
