2018 Recruiting - WBB

Must see TV! The Texas vs BU rivalry will be one of the most intense in all of WBB in the upcoming years.

I still feel its valuable to have an extra ship to give for 2019 or for an unexpected transfer.

Looks like Queen picked Baylor, per Rauol.
Well darn is all I’ve got to say!
Baylor ended up with one heck of a recruiting class. But all said I am extremely happy with the Texas 2018 commitments! Charli really rounded it out! Audrey is going to surprise a lot of people and Joanne Allen-Taylor is way under rated at #56 on the ESPN list. And of course Sedona is a future Super Star!
Bring it on Mulkey....for years to come it appears! Love the competition!!

I'm not sure how you think we have "an extra ship" for 2019??? We will have 14 on scholarship after Joyner returns in December. We have 3 seniors graduating with 4 coming in next year. That leaves a total of 15 (max ships allowed) for the 2018-19 team. Assuming all the Juniors come back for there final year we do have 5 Juniors on the rosters now which is the number of ships we should have available for the 2019 class. I personally don't believe the overall 2019 class is as strong as the 2020 class so I do hope we save some of those ships for the 2020 group. I'm sure Coach KA and her staff will make the best decision. Now we can move on to the 2019 recruiting string.

Since we were pursuing Christyn Williams, I have to assume we had a spot for her, which would mean someone on the current roster wouldn't be returning next season, regardless of the reason. Since we won't be using that 'ship for Christyn, then it would still be available, IMO.

Our numbers for next season with no attrition appear to be at 15:

Seniors: 5
Juniors: 3
Sophs: 3
Fresh: 4

We'll see what happens next in our recruiting.

What are others thoughts on Shae Routt? If she decides to re-commit to Texas, will the staff accept her back? (If we indeed have a scholarship available).

Like Ellis, I really like our 2018 class. Pretty balanced overall. Queen would have been really nice but having Charli recommit to Texas just makes that miss not so tough to take.

Still wondering if one of Khale or Jatarie will not use their RS year. Both should be in grad school next year if they elect to come back. We will be pretty strong inside if either comes back, especially Jatarie.

My biggest disappointment with the 2018 class it that we couldn't seem to get any interest from Zarielle Green, who I think would have been a perfect replacement for Ariel Atkins at SG/SF. Of course, I'm assuming our staff was interested in her, but who knows for sure with such an early commitment from Shae Routt and then the additional commitment from Lolo Davenport. Still, with all the connections we have to the Duncanville program, it just puzzles me that we were a non-factor in her recruitment.

Then, of course, we got back in the Christyn Williams sweepstakes, even though most pegged her as a shoe-in to choose UConn

Mack Brown said it best, "Worry about the ones you got, not who you lost."

Great post! One thing I know is the Texas roster is already loaded. Aston has gotten, is getting, and will continue to get the players she needs. I am thrilled with the last couple of recruiting classes and the one coming in.

My thoughts as well. I believe Z. Green my have decommitted from KU??? Her recruitment has been puzzling to me.

Prospect Nation shows her committing to Tennessee now. I have also been told that one of the other girls from Duncanville has changed her commitment from Kansas to Houston.

I totally missed the de-commit from Sedona. In fact I was going to make some comment that she's added muscle to her overall frame since the first pictures I saw of her when she committed. I guess that's the risk (commit-decommit-recommit) when you get a verbal 2 years out.

At the Pot Luck today, coach Aston stepped up to the mike to ask if anyone had questions, but she first said, "Okay, I want to first talk about this since I've been asked about it. We're done with scholarships. We're done with our 2018 class."

And then later said "I can't say who they are, but most of you already know"

I think that puts a definitive END to the mythical "we've probably got another scholarship depending on...." talk.

Thanks for that info.

Then why bring Christyn Williams in for an official visit if there wasn't a spot for her? We might be done with the class NOW that Williams eliminated us, but there would be a spot for her if she had wanted to come.

I think there may be a misunderstanding. Coach did not address scholarship numbers. She was simply indicating that there would be no more signings in the 2018 class other than the four we already have.

If there is another ship, they made the decision it will be saved. Unlike several other highly ranked recruits, Texas wanted Christyn, but the back-story there is for another day.

That was my first thought, too, Moooooo. We wouldn't have been recruiting Christyn if we did not have the room for her.

Our 2019 class may be a bit smaller than this year but, hopefully, just as talented or better.

Well, now that it appears our 2018 class will be composed of four players, then that means there would be 5 'ships available for the 2019 class and 3 'ships available fort the 2020 class. I wouldn't mind using 4 for 2019 and 4 for 2020 and get classes a bit more balanced; but, if the right players want to come in 2019, you take them.

If a Baylor poster made a claim that Charli or Sedona really wanted to go to Baylor but was not offered, I think we would see through that for what it was. So don't be surprised if a Baylor fan claims sour grapes to this, but I believe this info from two sources to be accurate.

I won't mention total numbers or names until after NSD, but several Baylor verbals had Texas #1, but were not offered. I was surprised by how many. For some, it was just not a cultural fit. Texas wants team-first players, not just high recruiting rankings. For one, Texas was genuinely interested, but that changed after Charli's verbal.

I see a direct correlation of this Baylor recruiting strategy to the high attrition rate.

I wasn't sure where to post this, so I'm posting it under 2018 Recruiting. Since it is only fair to the player to mask her identity, please consider the seven players in the 2017 and 2018 classes, none of which has played a minute of college ball.

I was discussing a particular player with someone close to the program. S/he thought this person could become the the most dominant player in Texas history. Before the conversation, I would probably have placed this person third, maybe even fourth on the list, so I was quite surprised.

I received an education I did not request, but it makes sense. The women's game is evolving. Traditional roles for each position, guard, forward, post, do not fit the advanced skill set and physical attributes that modern women athletes bring to the top programs like Texas. This has me excited to see how this person develops. Hopefully, in three years, this observation will prove correct and the player will be obvious to all.
