2018 Recruiting - WBB

thanks for the observations, Zig.
I wasn't sure where to post this, so I'm posting it under 2018 Recruiting. Since it is only fair to the player to mask her identity, please consider the seven players in the 2017 and 2018 classes.

I was discussing a particular player with someone close to the program. S/he thought this person could become the the most dominant player in Texas history. Before the conversation, I would probably have placed this person third, maybe even fourth on the list, so I was quite surprised.

I received an education I did not request, but it makes sense. The women's game is evolving. Traditional roles for each position, guard, forward, post, do not fit the advanced skill set and physical attributes that modern women athletes bring to the top programs like Texas. This has me excited to see how this person develops. Hopefully, in three years, this observation will prove correct and the player will be obvious to all.
This is so true. While I still use the traditional positions in my pregame write-ups, I know that the ebb and flow of the game pretty much makes that only a placesetter. Where a player plays depends on her versatility, skills and how she matches up with opponents. Which makes the development of our players such an exciting thing to watch over the four years they are here.

Ebb and flow...place-setter, that's a good way to put it.

Wow I like this kind of speculation Zig! 2017 & 18 are 2 amazing recruiting classes for Texas. I have my ideas on who you might be talking about but it takes a village to raise a child and all these girls have a lot to learn. But no doubt with this Coaching staff there is Greatness in their and our future! Hook'em!

The Houston Chronicle has a pay wall and I have copied it below.

Barbers Hill basketball star Charli Collier forging her own path
Like phenoms before her, UT pledge helps advance area girls basketball

MONT BELVIEU - Charli Collier spent her 18th birthday creating a social media firestorm.

The Barbers Hill forward decommitted from Connecticut and verbally committed to Texas in September.

In doing so, she exchanged Geno Auriemma for the Forty Acres and a chance to build the game's premier college program closer to home instead of joining the one that already rules the roost.

"Whenever I have my mind set on something, I just do it," said Collier, who said she knew some would look sideways at the country's No. 2-ranked player turning down UConn. "I don't really think about it too much. I feel like it was the best decision for me and my family. It wasn't any hesitation or anything."

Much like the Houston-area's past girls basketball stars, Collier is forging her own path.

  • She's done it all in the prep game and then some - triumphing in the Nike Elite Youth Basketball League, winning district titles, earning a bronze medal with the 2016 USA U17 national team at the FIBA World Championships and leading a proud Barbers Hill program back to the state tournament last year for the first time since 2012.

Right now, all she and the Eagles have to worry about is a vacant spot for the program's third state title and first since 1997.

Wiling role model

Houston's track record in pushing girls basketball forward is noted.

Last year, North Shore's Chasity Patterson broke school records for fun. Patterson is at Texas now, and Collier will get to team up with her.

In 2014, Brianna Turner led Manvel to state title glory and continues building a legacy at Notre Dame.

Clear Springs' Brooke McCarty, who was in Turner's class, is doing the same at Texas.

WNBA stars and Cy-Fair products Nneka and Chiney Ogwumike are ambassadors of the sport. Nimitz product Brittney Griner and Dulles' Kelsey Bone changed the game, too.

All of that is hard for Collier to miss. The 6-5 forward only knows it's her turn.

"I guess most people would think of me as a role model, so I just have to take on that role," Collier said. "Being like (former Dulles star) Kelsey Bone. I looked up to her. I looked up to Brianna Turner. Now I'm that person."

Collier spoke about assuming that role at the espnW: Women & Sports Summit last month. It's where she was invited to discuss handling the spotlight at such a young age.

Collier has done well with that. She was offered by Texas as an eighth grader and committed before re-opening her recruitment as a freshman in high school.

Then came the EYBL circuit and the spotlight that comes with that.

Then came the national team triumphs, even if they weren't. Collier helped the national team win bronze shortly after her father, Elliott, died from cancer.

Barbers Hill coach Tri Danley said the only banners that get hung at Barbers Hill are of the state championship kind.

The Eagles were close last year. They made the Class 5A state semifinal before falling to a vaunted Canyon team 66-39.

Extra motivation

Danley has dangled that score in front of Collier and her teammates a lot this offseason. The team returns all but two starters.

Danley didn't have to expand on Collier's rare talent. She's not only tall but skilled in traffic, can rebound and is mobile with a versatile game.

Danley did touch on her credentials in her career and how the only thing missing is a state title. It's not just Collier hungry to leave that mark at Barbers Hill, but her teammates as well.

The coach said it's nothing he has to preach.

"To hear them say we're worried about Sam Rayburn, which is Friday, that's what it's about," Danley said

If a Baylor poster made a claim that Charli or Sedona really wanted to go to Baylor but was not offered, I think we would see through that for what it was. So don't be surprised if a Baylor fan claims sour grapes to this, but I believe this info from two sources to be accurate.

I won't mention total numbers or names until after NSD, but several Baylor verbals had Texas #1, but were not offered. I was surprised by how many. For some, it was just not a cultural fit. Texas wants team-first players, not just high recruiting rankings. For one, Texas was genuinely interested, but that changed after Charli's verbal.

I see a direct correlation of this Baylor recruiting strategy to the high attrition rate.
I'm anxious to read more about you have to share, when the time is right.

When you think back to us having verbal commitments from Charli and Sedona pretty much through their Freshman seasons, one would assume our staff was no longer recruiting any Centers or Power Forwards for the 2018 class. So, perhaps we weren't involved with Na'Lyssa Smith or Queen Egbo at that time. But, when Charli and then Sedona de-committed, it made sense that our coaching staff had to recruit all four of those players hard in order to try and land 2 of them.

I recall Baylor posters, and even some on here, predicting that Charli would end up committing to Baylor. She attended their summer camp prior to her junior season, but not ours. Then, she visited UConn unofficially. Shortly afterwards, she commits to UConn; it wasn't until after that that Baylor officially offered Queen Egbo a scholarship (as per her twitter).

For us, getting Sedona to re-commit last Fall was huge; needed a true Center, IMO, with this class. Staff continued to recruit Smith and Egbo. When Smith announced who her top 4, and we weren't one of them, I think our staff moved on and really focused on Egbo. She comes in Labor Day weekend for her official visit; but, as we found out later, lots of stuff was happening behind the scenes with Charli and her eventual de-commitment from UConn, and commitment to us.

At that point, as much as I wanted Egbo to be a Longhorn, it was gonna be tough to make the numbers work. And, I honestly couldn't figure out how we could justify taking 3 frontcourt players in the same class. What was communicated between our coaching staff and Egbo after Charli's commitment is something we might never know; she made have still had an offer, or both parties might have decided to part ways based on recent events. Plus, if you take 3 post players in 2018, that pretty much means we don't take one (like Taylor Jones) in the 2019 class.

Glad to hear Taylor starts out good. Has anyone actually seen Warren play? Being from Saginaw Boswell HS, not a lot of exposure. I plan on getting out and seeing her play during the Thanksgiving tourneys. Hope her high school is playing in a decent tourney. Unless I have missed it, there is not a lot of info on her out there. Seems like she was a transfer in from Ohio and played at SB last winter. I don’t know a lot about her game. A little chatter about 3 point threat but my early impression was more a slasher. Don’t want her game to get lost in the euphoria of Collier, Prince and Taylor commitments.

I was planning to see her play this season. Was trying to find SB’s updated schedule last night.

Audrey Warren actually moved from Missouri to Texas prior to her junior season.

I think I had added some links earlier in this thread about her. There might even be a link to a video of her last second long-range 3-point shot made which helped her team advance in a playoff game, I believe, or at least sent it to OT.

Mooooo....I will .....or may not .....search through 35 pages of threads on Warren. And I like the in-person eye-ball test. I found Boswell’s schedule and I am going to see her play on 11-28 at The Colony....or 12-05 at Hebron. Since both are about 15 minutes away, that makes sense. Boswell plays 11-07(Tuesday) at Southlake Carroll at 6:30 pm. I might go to that but would entail fighting traffic. DFW Horn.....if any of those make sense for you, we could co-scout her at one of those games.

At the risk of remembering wrong, I believe Ellis21D was at some of our camp this past summer, and said that he thought Warren was perhaps the best 3 point shooter there. (I hope I'm not misquoting.)

I am very glad to see Texas has an offer out to Audrey Warren! She was at our camp and she stood out to me as the best 3 point shooter in attendance! It didn't seem like she missed during the drills and she made it deep into the finals of the 1 on 1 contest. 2 spots left to complete the 2018 class and it will be interesting to see who we get from the offers on the table!
Page 22: Ellis' post. But I believe "our camp" was his camp, not UT's camp.

Would be great but I’m much more FW than D. I was going to catch a Saginaw home game - work in downtown FW and it’s not that far up 35.

JoeDallas I was at the UT Camp and Audrey Warren was with out a doubt the best 3 point shooter at the camp. She really stood out to me. I look forward to following her senior season for the Boswell Pioneers. Also hope DFW and Flash give us an update if they attend a Thanksgiving tournament with her team participating.

Audrey Warren's schedule. It appears her team will be playing in three varsity tournaments this year, in Marble Falls Nov 16-18 and Buda Hays Nov 30, Dec 1 & 2. Both close to the Austin area. The third is the M. T. Rice tournament in Waco Dec 28-30. Look forward to hearing any reports from flash and DFW is they attend any of her games.

Thanks for the effort. I found it on page 22. And, her 3 point shot was at the buzzer to force OT.

If you want to see some of Warren’s play, open the link that Mooo provided from the Star-Telegram just above. There is a good video from Birdville’s victory from Feb 17 which includes the game tying 3 pointer from Warren. She is more than a 3 point shooter. Really good handle and other. I am going to bite. Going to go see her tomorrow night at Southlake Carroll. Report here after. I think she may be better than represented.
