2018 Recruiting - Football

Potential grad transfer (and potential 2018 Texas starting LT) Calvin Anderson liked some tweets by Poona Ford and Coach Warehime after our bowl game

As a reminder, grad transfers do not count against the 25 man limit. Anderson was a three year starter at LT. Not that we need an experienced LT or anything

On the grad transfer OL question, here was Nahlin's answer in a Q&A. Based on this, it sounds like we might be in on at least one other grad transfer OL besides Anderson (possibly the Stanford guy I mentioned several pages back -- Casey Tucker). Another is Antonio Riles JR (Florida).

Q: Have you heard of any grad transfer wanting to come to Texas?

A couple OL looking at UT. Should get a visit soon from one of them. Not putting his name out because I’m not sure his school knows.

Some more Calvin Anderson - see chart below from PFF on his pass blocking efficiency ranking for 2017

If we are able to sign him, it would set several things in motion
(1) Probably means we would get to RS all the 2018s
(2) Would not be forced to start RS Freshmen Cosmo at such a key position
(3) Allows Rodriguez to go to interior line

Maybe something like --
LT Anderson/Cosmi
LG Grandy or Vahe
C Shack or Rodriguez
RG Hudson/Angilau or another grad transfer
RT Kerstetter/Okafor

To follow up on the above, IT says we should be getting a visit from Standford OT Casey Tucker. And soon. IT thinks if we get him, he will be the starter. Also as noted several pages back, Tucker coming out of high school was a composite high 4-star. And he "was a starter on the sensational 2015 Cardinal line." But then he got injured (2016). Meanwhile Stanford continued to sigh high ranked OTs (if that sounded like jealousy, it probably was). So, Tucker realizes it is time for him to move on.

"It would be a good get and last season’s greatest weakness would certainly be on the road to repair."

He is #77 here. Big strong guy. Listed at 6'6,300 but to me looks like he could be 300+

Even with 2 QBs already, we are still pursuing 2018 QB Tanner McKee (6'6,220) from Corona Calif. Why? Because he plans to go on a Mormon mission following graduation and wont enroll until 2020

2,147 yards
63% completion percentage
23 TDs/2 ints
59 rushes for 675 yards and 11 TDs

McKee visited Texas on back Oct 7 (KSU game). He also OVd to aggy, Washington, Alabama, and Stanford, and UOVd to UCLA/USC. Herman has not yet used his in-home

“I talk to Texas really frequently. I talk to coach (Tim) Beck mostly. He’s been down on a home visit, and we really keep in contact.”

“You’re going to have to compete wherever you go, especially at a top program like Texas. I feel like there’s going to be tons of guys they have to compete with so that’s just part of the deal.”

“I feel like we run really similar offenses. So I feel like I can jump in and be really effective. Texas has some great athletes. Coach Herman is a great coach. He’s really going to make the program very successful.”

More on potential grad transfer OT Casey Tucker
Coming out, he was the #2 ranked recruit from AZ behind QB Kyle Allen

As a Sophomore in 2015, he was the starter at RT for 14g. As noted above, that 2015 Stanford offense (with Christian McCaffrey) was pretty rugged, ranking as the #14 rushing offense, #29 total offense and #11 in "Offensive Efficiency."

A a junior in 2016, Phil Steele listed him as preseason All-Pac-12 second team, while Athlon had him as preseason All-Pac-12 fourth team. He ended up playing in only 8g in 2016, starting at LT for 2g and RT for 6g.

If we can add both Anderson and Tucker, both 5th year OLs, to this line it would be awesome. They are your immediate starters at OT. Which would allow us to start the best trio of all the remaining OLs we have at the interior spots (Kerstetter, Rodriguez, Hudson/Gandy?). Do that, and the prospects for the 2018 offense suddenly look a lot better. I am not yet predicting it means we win the conference, but I am saying it would improve our chances tremendously.

If all of this^ happens and we have reasonably good health on the OL and yet we still end up sucking at offense, then that should be the end for Warehime

At the UA Game, Coburn fell in love with an interior lineman from Wash, DC that does not have a big offer list (UMass, UConn, Syr). Josh Johnson (6'2,295) is probably a center

And so looks like Derek Chang started following Josh Jefferson. And Jefferson has started following some Texas twitters. Apparently he has taken no OVs to date
edit -- Carrington has also started following Josh Jefferson

I lived in DC for long time and did some tutoring at some of the local schools. In general, the facilities and coaching are poor. Very poor based on what I saw. Although I cant say that for certain about his school

Warren noticed him too

The third potential grad transfer OL is Antonio Riles, JR who has also started following Warehime on twitter.

It would appear that the grad transfer OLs took a look at our OL play in 2017 and all came to the same conclusion -- "hey, I could start for those guys and live in Austin."

Would not be surprising if more than these 3 have been in contact with our coaches

Riles is a converted DL

Rising SSDE Caleb Okechukwu (6'4,240)
Interestingly enough, he is from the same DC area HS as the center (Joshua Jefferson) I mentioned above (St. John's College HS)

Freshman to start at Texas?

I'm sure there have been a few, but here are two names for you?

Edwin Simmons

Butch Hadnot

Both of those started and ran through the vaunted OU defense like a John Deere cutting hay in a pasture. I expect the same from Mr Ingram.

We had a much more disciplined, trained, and developed OLine when those guys played.

Stanford OL Casey Tucker is supposed to be in Austin this weekend (this is from OB so ......)

DE Caleb Okechukwu from DC who just played in the UA All-American is supoosed to be taking an OV to Texas this weekend (from 247)

Although aggy seems to be trying to avoid making a public statement about it, it looks like DL coach Terry Price is out (Jimbo hired Jerry Montgomery). Price and Chavis have not been listed on the aggy website as coaches for awhile and Chavis was announced today as the Piglet DC. So it looks like they may have been dragging this out, in part at least, in the hope of keeping Joseph Ossai in the fold. Ossai is a big fan of Price.

Two of the Texas paysites are at odds over Ossai. One is convinced he sticks with aggy but the other thinks Texas is in great shape. We will see who is correct.
