2018 Recruiting - Football

The name of one of the other grad transfer OLs is out there now
Not gonna post it here
But it sounds like we will have at least 3 of them visiting this weekend

I consider him being a decent/ok passer.

Interesting the different perceptions we have of Shane and Sam.
Shane was very accurate his first few games in 2016 but when he got injured he (understandably) lost quite a bit of it. I thought entering this year healthy would allow him to return to form but he hadn’t recovered and played like the injured Shane of the year before. Maybe struggling through the injury in 2016 and playing poorly took a toll on his confidence. I really can’t see another reason. If he were to somehow get back to form, he’s the best option at QB by far. That said, I’m not optimistic it will happen. He looks like he’s not playing with passion, so he’s definitely not practicing with it.
Ehlinger is very confident and a natural leader and more importantly the team rallies around him, but his skill set is largely mediocre and his decision making is downright horrific.
If Rising shows he can protect the ball early on, I honestly think he starts as he’s more skilled than Shane and unquestionably more skilled than Sam, both running and throwing.
Unless Shane experiences a renaissance, my bold prediction is Rising starts by the OU game.
Carry on.

Everything ou game will depend on USC (15 Sept.) and TCU (22 Sept.). Texas has to win both of those or Herman is going to be in trouble from the money crowd. Then losing to ou will really bring the heat.

ATH/DE Michael Williams (6'2,240) from LA will OV to Austin Jan 19
We have not yet offered. Williams is the #78 ATH in the country and #42 overall prospect in LA (per 247 Composite)

So it looks like our DL strategy is to bring in Vernon Jackson this weekend
Followed by Williams and Okechukwu the next weekend
It seems like a decent strategy, but Giles needs to close. I guess it helps the other coaches will be there

Williams does not have a UT offer yet. He has ~10 offers including Tenn, aggy, ASU, Ole Miss and LSU.

"Right now, Texas is at the top of my list. I haven’t received an offer from them, but one of the coaches told me when my position coach comes out to visit me, they’ll offer me.

“I started talking to them maybe in December. I’ve been talking to Oscar Giles and Jason Washington. They basically told me they wanted me to play outside linebacker/end, kind of a combo position.”

:e-thinking:

Phil Fulmer used to offer ~ 100 every year

Damn. I just really looked at the schedule for next year. USC, TCU, K State and blowU in a row is a helluva doozy. At least the first 2 are home games. But honestly I don't think USC, TCU and blowU will be nearly as good in 2018 as USC lost a QB that's likely going No. 1, Mayfield is gone, and TCU lost Hill at QB, who I thought was pretty damn good. As Texas fans we are all familiar with how important the QB position is. Unsure of K State's QB situation but we beat them this year so we got that going for us.

Again, four weeks in April, three weeks in August, thirteen weeks of season and neither improved on being able to read a defense. I would love to see improvement, but have seen nothing to give me encouragement.

So Sam has hit his ceiling after his freshman year? Give me a break... :rolleyes1: At least with Shane you can say youve seen 2 years with him.

We saw a season with Sam, minus a game and a few quarters. We saw very little of Shane. He was hurt and benched most all of the season. Shane's soph season was essentially non existent (oh yeah, he played the Maryland game where his defense gives up 51).

Youre just making my point more. To say either QB isnt going to develop at all from this point forward is a little much.

vague tweet is vague

At least its vague good and not vague bad. The summary of the post on this is that more players are trending to us right now than he thought.

"You should find out soon enough why there is an additional reason for Texas to be optimistic about closing well."
The dead period is over now, so things will start moving again
The contact period will run through Feb. 3. There will then by a one-day quiet period followed by a two-day dead period leading up to NSD on Feb 7

dang -- i was hoping we had this guy all wrapped up. In terms of need, I cant see anyone with more.

ps -- The good news/good rumor is that Anwar Richardson of OB has a source supposedly close to Anderson who claims he does want to return to Austin where he played HS

A little more on Calvin Anderson -- hard to see why a bright guy like this would willingly stain his stellar Rice undergrad record with an ou or Auburn followup, but we will see

"..... Anderson tells me that Texas was the first team to reach out after he announced his decision to transfer. He tells me that coach Beck will be in Houston tomorrow to meet Anderson for breakfast. And, coach Warehime will meet Anderson tomorrow for lunch.

Michigan’s Jim Harbaugh will be in Houston to personally see Anderson. The Sooners, Auburn and a number of other schools are sending coaches to Houston to visit with Calvin, as well.

Anderson does have some ties to Texas. He tells me that his step mother received her graduate degree and law degree from the University of Texas. He wasn’t shy about saying that she is rooting for Texas. I do expect Texas to receive one of his five official visits. However, it’s pretty clear that the final decision will be a business one. This was obviously a good year for Texas to have a left tackle projected to be a high draft pick. – (Super K)"

Here is an interesting OB/Jason Suchomel snippet, with some insight about our pursuit of grad transfer QBs last season, which leads into a discussion of 2018 grad transfer OT Calvin Anderson --

"If there is one thing Texas fans should know about coach Tom Herman, it’s that he is not a complacent when it comes to acquiring talent.

After watching Sam Ehlinger and Shane Buechele battle during spring practice, Herman did everything within his power to acquire former LSU grad transfer quarterback Brandon Harris. When Harris decided to attend North Carolina, Herman went all chips in on former Notre Dame grad transfer quarterback Malik Zaire, who eventually signed with Florida. Herman did not acquire the quarterbacks he desired, but he did not go out without a fight.

Herman had to endure an offensive line that did not live up to his expectations this season. Former Texas left tackle Connor Williams spent most of last season on the sidelines due to injury, while tackle Elijah Rodriguez did not play until the bowl game. With those players out of the lineup, Texas’ offensive line struggled in run and pass blocking last season. Herman used injuries to explain his team’s poor offensive line play to the media, but behind the scenes, he demanded more from his coaching staff. Specifically, offensive line coach Derek Warehime needed to do more, and he has a chance to add a player this weekend.

..... The good news, for Texas, is Anderson wants to play for the Longhorns....."

So Sam has hit his ceiling after his freshman year

I never said that. I have said repeatedly that I knew Todd Dodge taught Sam to read a defense, but suddenly while driving from West Travis County to 21st street, he forgot it all? I simply pointed out that in all those weeks throughout the year, both QBs had made ZERO progress under the coaching staff, and had indeed regressed. Thus, another three weeks of practice wasn't going to help. I put the blame squarely on the coaching staff, and on Herman and Beck specifically. Without a QB who can make his reads, this team is going nowhere. Yes, the OL is not what we want, but the inability to make reads at the LOS before the ball is snapped, to not know where the LBs & safeties are, is inexcusable for a HS QB much less one at The University of Texas.

Comparing High School football to Big 12 Football is a real stretch. And when you are running for your life being able to read a defense is it really help you that much. When plays don't have time to develop being able to read a defense doesn't help you that much. I'm not a stupid person but your post pretty clearly implied that Sam & Shane ain't going to get better and that we need one of these freshmen to somehow supplant them.

If Sam doesn't make a few boneheaded mistakes at the end of a couple of games we are at least a nine win team right now in spite of the horrible offense of line play. It's a fine line but I'm not going to blame a true freshman and imply that he hasn't gotten any better.

here is some more about letting Carrington out on the road

'Recruits praise Carrington: 'So many of us can relate to him'
Recruits haven't been shy when mentioning Bryan Carrington's presence as something that's set Texas apart from other programs."

" ..... As Carrington heads out on the road for his first day recruiting for the Longhorns away from campus, Herman isn’t making a calculated move by placing him in such a role. It’s more of a case where the head coach is unleashing one of the program’s best-kept secrets in hopes that the nation’s No. 3-ranked recruiting haul will be even stronger by the time the dust settles on National Signing Day.

Need proof of how important Carrington has been during the current cycle?

Just ask DaShaun White, the U.S. Army All-American linebacker from North Richland Hills who recently committed to Oklahoma.

When Horns247 asked White what made the recruiting efforts of the Texas staff different from how other schools recruited him, it was one name that was top of mind for White.

“Bryan Carrington is probably the biggest difference from any school that’s recruited me,” White said. “Coach (Todd) Orlando is my leading recruiter, but (Carrington is) the leading recruiter for everyone in the class.

“He’s what drives that thing, to be honest.”

Texas didn’t land White, but the Longhorns will finish the cycle on Feb. 7 with one of the top 2018 classes in the country. According to the recruits who have already put pen to paper, Carrington deserves a proper share of the credit for making that happen.

Countless members of Herman’s first full-cycle class have cited Carrington’s prowess as a recruiter as one of the biggest pluses Texas had working in its favor during the process. As four-star U.S. Army All-American cornerback signee Anthony Cook put it, Carrington’s swagger and ability to relate to high school seniors played a big role in Texas getting more than a few of the current 19 signees and 21 total members of the class in the fold.

“I feel like so many of us can relate to Bryan because he’s around our age,” Cook said. “He’s a young dude, so we can relate to him because he’s not old or anything like that.” ....."

BFS! Make your initial reads, then secondary after the snap. If you aren't going to have time, quick timing throws, not "punts" into double & triple coverage.

D-1 is bigger and faster, some disguises are better, but the reads are the same. Sam could make them at Westlake, but can't now? Why?

Yes, a few bonehead plays could have turned the season, just like Mack not sucking up to Phil Simms in Texas Stadium would have put us playing for another National Championship rather than getting embarrassed by Colorado, or the horrid option in Pasadena that cost us another National Championship, or another National Championship when Fred didn't put Feldt back to receive the punt in the Cotton Bowl. Mistakes happen, but if they happen every game, either you need to change players or the coaches aren't doing their jobs. I choose the latter.
