2018 Recruiting - Football

Stanford OL Casey Tucker is supposed to be in Austin this weekend (this is from OB so ......)

Tucker will also visit Colorado and TCU.

"...... In terms of competition, Colorado returns a part-time starter at right tackle next season, while TCU lost three of four starters along the offensive line, including both tackles.

Since it’s questionable whether Tucker can effectively play the left tackle position, the Horned Frogs probably hold the edge in opportunity over the Longhorns. From the Texas perspective, Tucker was more highly regarded out of high school than Rice transfer Calvin Anderson, who is also a target for the ‘Horns — Tucker was a top-100 prospect ranked among the 10 best offensive tackles in the 2014 class. However, Anderson probably has the edge in pass protection, which is the biggest need for position coach Derek Warehime.

Still, the pursuit of Tucker makes sense and landing him would certainly improve the 2018 Longhorns offensive line."

Steve Wifong post UA Game comment --

"..... Junior Angilau will be a multi-year starter, team captain type. Good athlete for an offensive lineman, a thick, kind of rocked up offensive lineman with the traits to really control things at the point of attack. This class is really good with the standouts showing out during bowl week."

Calvin Anderson quote from TFB --

“They’re very interested, likely will plan a visit there soon. I have had multiple conversations with coach Warehime since getting my release”.

Picking up Anderson to go along with Grandy and the development of the young guys, plus the added competition in the QB room with the addition of Rising and Thompson…now you’re talking! – (Super K)

i don't see the QB competition occurring as much as others with the new guys. i'm not saying i don't like them in the future, but i don't see them as a realistic #1 option over shane and sam next fall.

I agree. But with injuries that have occurred so much over the last several years it seems 2 QB's are not enough these days.

If you are correct, it's going to be a long damn season. Hoping that one of the freshman is coachable or can already read a defense.

Again, four weeks in April, three weeks in August, thirteen weeks of season and neither improved on being able to read a defense. I would love to see improvement, but have seen nothing to give me encouragement.

For all that there was to complain about with Greg Davis, that is one thing he must have taught well. They all seemed to have an out and/or hot route that both the QB and WR were in sync with. Agree, you never saw it this year.

Several CBs for WR Joshua Moore to Oregon, where will OV on the last weekend.
FSU also very interested in him
We get his OV this weekend

Vernon Jackson (6'3,240) from Boling last said he is still ‘pretty solid’ to Alabama. But we are still pursuing

“The coaches have been telling me that they need a player like me to finish out the class. They’ve been saying how we could do something special.”

“I don’t know what my interest is. I’m trying to see how I feel after the visit.”

There are rumors we will be hosting more grad transfers this weekend than just Tucker (but we are trying to keep the names from getting out -- which probably sounds like a dog whistle to Chip Brown).
Also visiting are some 2018 players who have already committed and signed, such as Sterns
So we will be surrounding the grad transfers and Moore with future Longhorns.

Although aggy seems to be trying to avoid making a public statement about it, it looks like DL coach Terry Price is out (Jimbo hired Jerry Montgomery). Price and Chavis have not been listed on the aggy website as coaches for awhile and Chavis was announced today as the Piglet DC. So it looks like they may have been dragging this out, in part at least, in the hope of keeping Joseph Ossai in the fold. Ossai is a big fan of Price.

Two of the Texas paysites are at odds over Ossai. One is convinced he sticks with aggy but the other thinks Texas is in great shape. We will see who is correct.

Now it looks like Terry Price will stay at aggy.
I thought he might go to ARK with Chavis
Hurts us with Ossai
As great as this class is, we nonetheless are sucking it at certain positions, such as the DL

The Baylor coach might be leaving for the NFL
They have a sneaky good 2018 recruiting class, but it looks like most have already signed, including Swirl Williams who we were after but too late
Here is the list

Baylor will not like the fall out from this! Even if he does not take the Colts job. What a douche bag for even taking an interview after just one year and thinking about ditching his kids he just signed wow, epic dirt bag

agreed. some think thompson and rising have good shots at pushing a healthy sam and a healthy shane for the start. i don't see it.

i really like them, but they aren't
Former Alabama QB Greg McElroy believes Jalen Hurts may transfer to Texas
TCU might make more sense for him
Hope that doesnt happen

he doesn't throw enough, does he?

X,

I told the people sitting in front of me during the first half of the OU game that next year Rising would start that game. Neither QB has shown me anything since to make me believe different - that's on the coaching staff not the kids. We will have an incredibly talented and underused WR corp, and next year Mr Ingram will be there to start at RB. We need a QB.

Neither Hurts nor Tua??? received the quality coaching that Shane & Sam received in HS, but both are light years ahead of either of our QBs playing the game, reading the defenses, and looking off DBs.

I'm not so sure I blame him.

I'm sure he looked around and thought - what the hell did I get myself into!?!

Yea, not good for his recruits, but he has a bigger responsibility to his family.

Jackson will OV to Austin this weekend
Would be a nice flip if we can do it

He came from Temple! Now making a mil plus a year in Waco and agreed to 7 year deal. how do you look kids in the eye and leave em like that. Oh my

How can he look his wife and kids in the eye if he doesn't take a better deal?

"Don't ever choose a school because of a coach because chances are he won't be there as long as you are." - OA Phillips to Steve Worster while recruiting him to go to Third Ward.

Could not disagree more. There is a chance that one of the freshmen are some sort of QB sevant, but they don't come around often. For the first time in over a decade we actually have QB depth, what we need is to stick with the guys that have experience. Do you realize we said the same thing about Colt McCoy after his Redshirt Sophomore year, and Vince Young after his Redshirt freshmen year, hell we were bitching about Vince for most of his Redshirt Sophomore year. We didn't start believing Vince was Vince until after the Kansas and Michigan game.

This program needs continuity and the only way to get that is to trust that the system will produce players.

As for Alabama, Jalen Hurts was ineffective against Georgia because the Bulldogs have coaches that had the defense ready for him, Tua was effective because the defense had no idea how to defend him. Do you remember Jerrod Heard putting up 500 yards of offense against Cal, do you remember him doing it again? No, because once defenses got film on him, they were able to take away what he did well and left him with no game.

For the first time in over a decade we actually have QB depth,
This. Shane is a very accurate QB but he has trouble staying healthy and buying time in the pocket or scrambling when the play breaks down. Sam was great at creating positive plays when things broke down but had turnover problems (you know because he was 18 when the season started and had a bad o-line).

Both good QBs - the last time we had two good QBs was Major and Chris Simms (maybe Vince and Chance Mock).

I have never liked Hurts as a passer. He is not as accurate as Shane or Sam. All his success has come with an NFL caliber o-line and every team playing to stop the run. Even with those advantages he only has 500 more yards passing than Shane (playing in 8 more games) and a lower completion percentage. His real advantage is rushing yards and rushing TDs.

I would take him as a running back or slot receiver or safety. Not a QB.

Tua was a 5* and the #1 dual QB recruit last year. Hurts is an eite athlete, but he is comparable to our guys in terms of his prospects. Maybe you're right. That would be great imo.

Having a better OL like Alabama has is grossly neglected when it comes to analyzing how well a QB does.

Rich Rodriquez is out at Zona. Looking at their unsigned commitments, here are two of potential interes ..... RB Martell Irby https://247sports.com/Player/Martell-Irby-46040637 Both Bryan Carrington and Derek Chang (Director of Player Personnel) started following him, and he just started following Jason Washington

Besides Washington, Chang and Carrington, now Mehringer is following former Arizona commit Martell Irby.
