2018 Recruiting - Football

I thought he was joining in with Herman’s dance for a second

We once had a player leave to become a fashion model
Junior might be our second

Jaylen Waddle (5'9,175) is #7 WR nationally and #6 overall in state per the 247 Composite. He has used all his OVs (Alabama, FSU, Oregon, TCU and aggy). However, he plans to make an unofficial visit to Texas this month.

“I plan on taking an unofficial visit some time during January. I have to fit it around basketball. I’ve been up there a lot and seen everything, but I want to have a good unofficial.”

“Slot production is what I’m really heavy on. They got it going this season. I think the future is bright there, especially with the recruiting class coming in.”

TFB on White and Ossai --

– Continue to hear good things for Texas on the Joseph Ossai front. Ossai tells me that he will not make an announcement however, until signing day.

– I continue to believe that Texas isn’t in a great spot with DaShaun White.

Herman doesn’t have to worry about teaching these guys to be physical. Overshown plays like his hair is on fire and Foster is WAY more physical than I remembered from his film. He’ll start next year.
Lots of Coburn, which I’m ambivalent about because my gut says he gone.

I'd love for some of these guys to redshirt, but I really would hate it if any of them started. Nothing against them personally, but I just don't like freshmen starting.

I think one can overgeneralize on starting freshman.

Good reasons to start a new freshman:
Head-n-shoulders the best man for the job

Bad reasons to start a freshman:
Lack of depth requires it
Hyped at the potential
Promised him he would start as a freshman

I think the most healthy programs around are the one's who have red-shirt juniors and seniors starting. They are older, experienced and physically filled out. If you are reloading every year with those kind of players then you are fully formed as a program.

Think about Baker Mayfield; he's 22 years old.

I'm trying to think of a time when a Freshmen was head and shoulders better than the guys we had on campus? Maybe Ricky Williams starting at fullback. Did Derek Johnson start as a freshmen, I know he was an impact player as a linebacker, but I don't think he started.

It just seems to me that every time we have had a freshmen starting is because we lacked depth at that position. Help me out here if you have an example I'm missing.

Excellent observation, bystander. Think back to the early- to mid-nineties with Nebraska - they redshirted the freshmet while they bulked up in the weight room and played on the scout team, then played a bit on special teams and as back-ups the next couple of years before sliding into starting positions for the last two years. And when the Huskers were well ahead in the late third quarter (as they were very frequently), Tom would pull the starters and let the backups finish the game - good reward for the backups, minimized the exposure to injury for the starters, and if a starter did get hurt, Tom could bring in a backup whop had some playing time under his belt. Great way to run a program.

Someone please help me understand. My understanding is that we are still trying to land another OL or two. I've heard of one juco target, but I just checked and I believe I counted seven uncommitted OL prospects in the ESPN 300. We have offered exactly ZERO of them. Does anyone know why?

DJ only had 1 start his freshman year because he was squarely behind the DD Lewis, Skyrone Jones, Everick Rawls group. But he was still 2nd on the team in tackles. Look at this line from his FRESHMAN year:
83 Tack (57 solo); 4.5 sacks; 13 TFL; 9 QBP; 3 PD; 1 FF; 2 FR

That's basically all-conference.

You don't have to look too far back. Not our program but shows it happens. Georgia QB came in as a true freshman and outplayed the Heisman trophy winner last weekend and now will be playing in the national championship.

Sounds like Dallas-area LB DaShaun White is about to flip from aggy to ou

Pretty cold of Riley to tweet out the gig'em thumbs-up like that

Poor aggy

A freshman that starts doesn’t have to be heads and shoulders better; Orlando and Herman just have to think they’re the best option. And plenty of times it’s worked, look at Walker Little. Plenty of times it hasn’t too. Early enrollees, like BJ, fare better generally. Hell, I can see Stearns, also an EE, starting too. Unless Jones picks it up. They will be at some point at least and it’s gonna be fun

Didn’t Earl Thomas start as a freshman? I’m sure Wikipedia could tell me....

No, he redshirted and then started all games as a redshirt freshman.

Article in today's Ft. Worth Star Telegram doesn't sound good for the ags. Looks like a battle between Fisher's bagman and Big Red.

Freshman to start at Texas?

I'm sure there have been a few, but here are two names for you?

Edwin Simmons

Butch Hadnot

Both of those started and ran through the vaunted OU defense like a John Deere cutting hay in a pasture. I expect the same from Mr Ingram.
