2018 Recruiting - Football

It's beginning to look a lot like ......
no not Christmas
but rather a lot like Year 2 of Charlie Strong
We are losing a lot of players

It's good for recruiting which is what this sub forum is all about. We can certainly sell playing time. Again.

And it has to also be noted that Herman's recruiting is going better than Strong's was at the same point in time. Herman and crew are aggressive recruiters and they are getting great results. But the bad news is that this 2018 class is not filling up with studs where we need the studs the most. Both lines. It's just a matter of fate that this was not a great year in state for OLs and DLs. There are, of course, great linemen out of state but if we were going to land highly ranked out of state players in this class, we needed to win this season. And we didnt.

The 2019 class in state looks much better for the lines and hopefully we will mop up then. But I am growing increasingly concerned about the fate of the team next year, and the fate of the program again. Charlie never recovered from his Year 2 swan dive. The losses and poor team performances were one thing with such a young team. But when you combined that with his stubbornness in making obviously needed upgrades among his assistant coaches, it turned into disaster from which Strong was not going to recover.

How much does this sound like where we are right now?

maybe if we underpaid our assistant coaches instead of overpaying them we might get better results...just a thought.
Well I guess that is a stupid thought.

Herman may be going for the turnover record. 1/3 of the entire roster?
And we definitely need more than 25 schollies. Unfortunately, the rules have changed and we can no longer easily oversign and apply the EEs to last years class. It's much harder than it used to be. Bad timing for this change because we could probably sign 40

The latest on JUCO OT Badara Traore is that he is down to Texas and LSU but "he is still deciding between the two.” LSU did just get a commitment from another JUCO OL
There are not many ready-to-play LTs out there
Obviously a huge need for us
Another bonus, Traore graduates in December and so will be an EE

Recent quote --

“Texas is still in great standing. I’m a JUCO player, so I want to come in and have a chance to win the starting job. That’s a big thing for me, and I know Texas has that to offer.”

We are very much in it for LB Damone Clark (LSU commit)
He is good friends with Malcolm Roach.
Clark likes what UT offers in terms of "life after football"
He is a possible EE, which means the decision should come sooner than later

Full release
He is from Manvel and we recruited him at one time
But the taint of that program might be too much

Todd Orlando did an in-home Monday night with 4-star LB DaShaun White (Richland) current aggy commit. After which, recruiting Mike Roach said he's close to putting in a CB of White to Texas. Coincidence?

White is friends with fellow LB and Texas commit Byron Hobbs. They would make for a nice Dallas area LB tandem

We seem to be entering the next phase of our recruiting strategy
Depending on how you look at it -- We've realized who is not coming back and the numbers we have and either
(a) we are expanding our scope based on the increased numbers, or
(b) we are striking out on our Plan As and moving onto the Plans Bs, or
(c) there were a handful of guys were were waiting to see their senior film on are now making offers to the best of that bunch
Take your pick

Another DL on the radar is Courtre Alexander from Owasso, OK
Listed at 6'5, 260
Film looks good

At least check out the hit at 56 seconds - lol

I can’t find where Elliot declared. Link? Also, what would be the reason for Boyd or Carter leaving? Boyd improved but IMO isn’t NFL ready, and Carter played a lot for a freshman despite Young taking over in the last few games.

Regardless this is absolutely nuts. Of course the o-line is a HUGE concern and I see why Herman is throwing out all these JC OL offers. Let’s hope we hit on at least a couple. I see 4 decent to good returning OL, 5 if Kerstetter improves. So zero depth.

One thing is for sure: we’ll have a lot of depth at WR.

But on a positive note this is this class has the highest number of highly rated players we’ve had in a long time, and is exponentially better than last year’s though losing to Tech and general shoddy coaching will likely lead to some attrition and put us out of the race for some key targets.

Interesting comment on TFB about Cam Rising
Nut sure if I agree but here it is

In my opinion, no one will prove more important to this class and Tom Herman’s future at Texas than Cam Rising. Tim Beck is expected to visit Rising today.

And maybe not the best news either that Beck is still the guy

http://texas.thefootballbrainiacs.com/2017/11/open-post-monday-november-27th/

I think Rising starts the opener next year. I think he’s better than Sam based on his film. Kid is gonna be a stud.

DBs -- We probably have the best 2018 DB class nationally (our commits are ranked #2, 3, 5 and 9 overall in state). If Cooks (#1) joins, we will. This class is overweighted with stud DBs which is one of the main reasons for our #2 natl ranking. But Overshown may spin down (the next Elliott?). And all of them are 100% takes.

WRs -- We look great at WR as well with Eagles (#1 WR in state), Woodard (#10 overall) and Moore (#1 overall in KY). If we add Marshall or Waddle, it will be a top class

RB -- Ingram is the best RB in the state.

QB -- probably a top 10 natl QB class with Rising and Thompson

TE -- We have Epps now and if we get lucky with Ford, it would instantly become a top TE class. We missed here on some players we wanted but next season season doesnt look so bad with Epps added to Beck, Brewer, and Leitao.

K - our kicker verbal is #2 nationally

The three areas of concern are OL, DL and LB.

OL -- It is not a great year in state for OLs. We currently have the #2 and 3 ranked in state OLs (both 4-stars). Reese Moore in particular is having a great 2018 and his stock is rising. We are currently after multiple OLs, including out of state OT Angilau (#19 OT nationally) and high school OTs Frank Filip and Kaitori Leveston. We are also after several JUCOs including Traore (#1 JUCO OT) and Grandy. If we land Moore, Ghirmai, Angilau, Traore plus Grandy, and/or Leveston we will be in as good as shape as we could hope under the circumstances.

DL -- We have Coburn (#7 DT natl) now. If we add Vernon Jackson and Jarrett Jackson it would be a pretty good class. Hopefully another.

LB -- We already have Hobbs and Adeoye. Close out with White, and Ossai and this too is a good class.

Gandy will OV Dec. 15

More on Gandy, the OL offer today --

He originally committed to but never enrolled at San Jose St. Instead, he "went and fought MMA for like six months." Then he ended up at the College of San Mateo the next spring. He played there one season, which means he is a qualifier and will have 4 seasons to play 3 more. His current offer list is Hawaii, Fresno St, and Louisville, with interest from Oregon and USC

Warehime went to California to meet Grandy face to face, after the film review. Made the offer in person

Here is his film. He moves pretty well but probably not well enough to be an LT. Maybe an RT, maybe inside too. We are going to be somewhat desperate for experienced players in 2018, including the OL. So I am in favor of prowling the JUCO ranks for the right guys.

Traore got a CB to LSU
Steve Wiltfong 247 natl guy
