2018 Recruiting - Football

Kelly to UCLA does bring up one potential issue
Cam Rising is a high 4-star QB from Newbury Park, CA (near Oxnard, north of LA). He has been committed to us since April, but has the type of game Chip might like. Based on his twitter, he thinks he might be able to start at Texas next season
UCLA already has one commit from a top dual threat QB, so we will see if anything happens here

Anything will be possible after that demonstration last night?

Shane in HS

Sam in HS

Cam in HS

Thompson in HS

Based on these vids, well I’ll just say I really hope he signs with us. Just needs to learn to tuck the ball. Like Thompson a lot too, hands down best runner.

It’s premature of course, e.g. the Sam-like throw at 1:10 is a little scary, but ******* we have to hit at QB at some point.

We going to hit at QB with Johnson in 2019. It's going to feel like a long wait. It seems to me our 2018 candidates have average stats or slightly better this past season.

Based on the above, is it possible we start a freshman QB four straight years? Oh my ... hold my beer

I'm hoping Johnson gets a redshirt because either Thompson or the kid from California are playing. Roschon isn't very big. Not sure he can take the pounding if we don't get some OLs. Besides, he needs to come in early or redshirt to compensate for the lack of coaching at PNG.

I think the film above of both Rising and Thompson is their junior years
Rising is 247's #7 ranked Pro Style QB nationally (.9314)
Thompson is 247's #12 Dual Threat nationally (.9062 = barely a 4-star)

Here is something from a game this year of Thompson -- more film will come out later on both

aggy recruits we have interest in --

Max Wright - they say he loves the aggy cult culture. But Herman is still working on him
Joseph Ossai - is not committed yet but, like Wright, he likes the whacky aggy cult stuff. Nonetheless, we have a shot
DaShaun White - flippable. Us or ou the two likely spots
Vernon Jackson - Bama commit who we have been chasing, along with aggy. If he decided he would rather stay in state, we are in pretty good shape
Bobby Brown has a solid relationship with DL coach Terry Price. If Price is retained, then Brown will probably stick with them. If not, then Bama is also in the picture

Here is the TFB guy on the topic of the current Texas QBs

Sam Ehlinger: I’ve gone on record before the season, during the season, and now saying that I have never thought that QB’s Sam Ehlinger or Shane Buechele are the long term answers for Texas to get them back to the top. I have said that Ehlinger gives them the best shot to win games though. He’s played really well at times, but Friday was his 3rd game of the season where he’s had a turnover that has either lost the game for Texas right then and there or a TO that pretty much sealed Texas’ fate. That’s something that can’t happen, and the main hope is that this is something he can improve with as he gains more experience.

Like I’ve said before, keeping Ehlinger healthy will be the biggest key moving forward.

"Bonitto - he says the staff Texas hosted 2018 LB, Nik Bonitto (Fort Lauderdale, FL) this past weekend and he came away impressed. “It was amazing. The environment overall was great and the staff just really welcomed me in. And I really got along with the commits that were there this weekend”.
......

We are doing an in-home with 4-star LB Bonitto this week
Supposedly in good shape with him

Michael Dickson is also considering leaving a year early

Jake McMillon is supposed to be leaving to work for his dad

Both Duvernay brothers might transfer

Edwin Freeman might retire

Another key OL is JUCO Badara Traore. At one time, he seemed to favor us, then it was said to be LSU. But reality is he has not decided yet.
He does visit LSU this weekend, then may go to ou. Auburn is also involved.
He will sign in Dec and be an EE.

LSU got a big JUCO OL commit in Damien Lewis
So hopefully this got Traore's attention, since he was at LSU at the same time

I don't know why an OL would leave seeing that the opportunity is there unless, perhaps, he doesn't feel like he is a difference maker at this level or maybe he feels that the coaches don't have enough faith in him.

More on Gandy, the OL offer today --

He originally committed to but never enrolled at San Jose St. Instead, he "went and fought MMA for like six months." Then he ended up at the College of San Mateo the next spring. He played there one season, which means he is a qualifier and will have 4 seasons to play 3 more. His current offer list is Hawaii, Fresno St, and Louisville, with interest from Oregon and USC

Warehime went to California to meet Grandy face to face, after the film review. Made the offer in person

Here is his film. He moves pretty well but probably not well enough to be an LT. Maybe an RT, maybe inside too. We are going to be somewhat desperate for experienced players in 2018, including the OL. So I am in favor of prowling the JUCO ranks for the right guys.

DO you mean Cuney or McMillon?
