And then the whistle blows and the match is over. Forlan and Uruguay come an inch away from extra time.

What a thrilling match. Much admiration for both sides, who battled for the full 90. One can only hope the final lives up to the standard set by this third-place match.

Third place matches are usually a lot of fun, this one did not disappoint. You really have to wonder what germany would have loked like in the semi's with Mueller. They just seemed to flow better with him. Glad to see Forlan get his fifth and the sixth was just about two inches shy.

Pre-game down here included the arrival of all the luminaries, the busses from their hotels to stadium and music/extras you would expect of a 4 hour super bowl pre-game. Quite a build up.

Ramos with a blatant dive.

Gem, my wife dubbed Forlan" Pretty Boy" a few weeks ago and she meant it in a good sense. Every time Uruguay played she asked if the pretty one had a goal.

Spain with huge chance in first five minutes, great header and ball just went wide of being a sitter on the rebound from goalie.

Spain with all sorts of pressure here. Ramos should've done better when he dribbled free into the box.

Ramos with nifty move and his cross is knocked away then on ensuing corner Villa hits side of net after the ball finds him. Spain pressuring the Dutch early and finding space. No goals but action filled first 12 minutes.

First yellow for Van Persie, Dutch are being very aggressive and the Spaniards are going to ground on any contact. Not quite diving but not really fighting through any contact either.

Deserved yellow for Van Persie. He should stick to bitching about fouls called against his defenders and give up trying to play defense himself.

Now yellow for Puyol. Tackle was from behind on Robben who does his usual fall to the ground like he was shot.

Yellow was deserved but any foul on Robben gets so much acting from Robbem its hard to gauge how bad the foul really was.

Van Bommel could've been sent off for that. It would've been harsh, but I've seen refs do it.

4 yellow cards in first 23 minutes as Ramos picks one up shortly after. Ramos looked like he got a lot of ball.

Yeah, Howard Webb is dealing cautions like it was seven-card stud night. Aside from the Ramos one, however, they were all deserved. Guess both sides are a bit amped and reckless to be playing in the final.

I just told my husband that I had a feeling there would be red cards in this game. I guess we will see
