WORLD CUP 2010 (TV Schedules and brackets also)

Wow, that looked like a lot of contact on Torres--shoulder to shoulder or not, that was a helluva lot of contact. Lucky the ref didn't award a PK there.

SPOILER!

Spain 2, Chile 0--37th minute.

Free on the left side of the 18-meter box, David Villa lays the ball off toward the middle to Andres Iniesta, whose first touch is to send the ball to far post, easily beating Bravo.

Meanwhile, Estrada is given a second caution for the most delicate of touches on Torres. Chile is down by two goals and down to 10 men.

Fernando Torres is apparently a ginger version of Cristiano Ronaldo. Who knew?

Nevertheless, I do believe he deserved a PK for that shoulder-to-shoulder charge that bowled him over a minute before his flop. The defender made absolutely no play on the ball and launched himself into Torres.

More terrible refereeing. Very sad.

SPOILER!

Spain 2, Chile 1--47th minute.

Shorthanded Chile pulls one back with Rodrigo Millar's strike from just outside the 18-meter box that takes a lucky deflection off a defender and finds its way into the net.

SPOILER!

Spain 2, Chile 1--Final.
Honduras 0, Switzlerland 0--Final.

That closes the book on group play for the 2010 World Cup. Honduras' tie runs CONCACAF's overall mark to 2-3-4 (wins-losses-ties), whereas CONMEBOL suffers its first blemish of the tournament courtesy of Spain. Even so, all five teams from the South American region advance to the knockout stages after accumulating an 10-1-4 record and winning four groups.

They play some pretty good soccer in this hemisphere ...

EDIT: Corrected CONMEBOL's overall record.

Somewhat anticlimactic ending. I watched both matches in a bar full of Hondurans who work here on the island. Honduras deserved a goal for the tremendous counter attacking style they had and really hard luck to only get a draw. Spain were brilliant in the first half and even though red was a joke, the same player should have been red carded a few minutes earlier so in end justice was served. I cant really get on either team for kicking it around the last 15 minutes, you do what you have to given the situation.

10 non UEFA teams into round of 16 really confirms that this year at least the Euro teams are not class of tournament.

ROUND 3 RECAP"Dude, check out the pair of teams on that pitch! What a knockout!"Group play is kaput; we've reached the knockout stages. Henceforth, the losers get to go home and watch on TV. The winners get to extend their dreams of lifting the trophy for a few days more. Here are the scoring figures after three rounds of group play:

First round
saw 25 goals scored in 16 matches for an average of 1.56 goals
per contest.

Second round
saw 42 goals scored in 16 matches for an average of 2.63 goals
per contest. That's quite a jump.

Third round
has seen 34 goals scored in 16 matches for an average of 2.13 goals
per contest. Friday's contests really bogged down this average.

Overall
, there have been 101 goals scored in 48 matches for an average of 2.10 goals
per contest. I saw on ESPN yesterday that this is the lowest goals-per-game average in the history of the tournament. If true, then conservative first-round strategies aren't the only culprit here. Is the sport as a whole becoming more "negative?"

When Brazil-Portugal goes nil-nil you begin to see the Mourinhoization of the sport, defend defend defend and hope for a goal. If not accept the scoreless draw.

Portugal a team with so many stars plays two scoreless draws in the group stage, that has to be strategy and that type of strategy is gaining traction. I have to admit that many including myself may think Maradonna is the world's biggest a**hole but at least he coaches exciting futbol and not this pack it in and kick it around crap. Teams are more afraid to lose than they are excited to win.

This more than anything is why the sport is still a niche one for Anerican fans. Unless you grew up outside the country (like I did) or have some other strong pull toward it (because you played, etc.) it beats down the average American sport fan with this kind of attitude.

South Korea and Uruguay are underway!

In F-Dub's round of 16 prediction thread, I very nearly went with South Korea, but I ultimately decided that the more disciplined Uruguayans would prevail.

SPOILER!

Uruguay 1, South Korea 0--8th minute.

A centering pass from Forlan bounds completely trhough the box, ahead of the keeper's outstretched arms, until it reaches Crybaby Luis Suarez, who had looped around the back post. Despite the extreme angle, Suarez keeps his composure and delivers an excellent shot into the far post netting.

I strongly dislike Suarez, but I'll give credit where credit is due: that was one helluva finish.

I am more and more impressed with Forlan, he has been one of the top if not the top performers with his crosses, shots and set peices. Just an incredible weapon and he gift wrapped that for Suarez, who admittedly made a nice shot into an open net from a severe angle.

SPOILER!

Uruguay 1, South Korea 0--Halftime.

Having netted an early goal, Uruguay is smartly hanging back and doing what it does best--defend. The Uruguayans didn't surrender a single goal in three group matches and have granted the South Koreans very little time and space to generate quality chances.

Still, if there's a side with the capacity and tenacity to find an equalizer, it's South Korea.

S. Korea absolutely dominating time of possession and deservedly get a goal. Uruguay cannot stay in this shell or Korea may get another one.

SPOILER!

Uruguay 1, South Korea 1--68th minute.

A deserved equalizer for the Koreans!

A foul leads to an indirect free kick from about 35 meters out. The ball is served into the middle of the box, where it is headed up but not out of play. Instead, the ball drifts left of goal, where two Koreans await. Lee chungyong outleaps his teammate and heads it down and past the onrushing keeper.

Wow did he catch that behind the line.

Replay shows right on the line, way too close for comfort.

Suarez blows a gifted chance on a long ball played into the box that leaves him with an uncontested header.

That equalizer has opened this match back up. I doubt this score will stand.

SPOILER!

Uruguay 2, South Korea 1--80th minute.

GOLAZO! GOLAZO! GOOOOOLAZO-AZO-AZO-AZO-AZO!!!!

That just might be the goal of the tournament so far. Unbelievable. Suarez settles possession just outside the 18-meter box, dribbles to his right (but still left of goal), and then uncorks a wickedly swerving shot that bends around the defenders and goalkeeper before tucking inside the far post.

Incredible goal!
