Why Does This Appear to be a Black Problem?

I appreciate the comment Deez. That was where I was going. Every parent has to have different, yet similar, conversations. It is a shame, but it is a reality. And, it is not a situation any race or sex of child or sexuaal orientation or religion or culture is immune to.

I guess Satchel does not want to answer on what he tells his kids.....

PS to Buckhorn...I'm not trying to pick a fight with you, but I worry about many of the same things you speak of as a woman that is 5"0, 100 lbs. I am a runner, triathlete and am often out training on long runs, cycling. Even when walking at night or returning to my car from a store at night I am constantly in a state of awareness that a man could jump out or grab me and do me harm.

We all have our issues, that is all I'm trying to say. And what happened to this young man is a terrible tradgedy, but shouldn't be used as a torch to refule a fire that, I feel is and should be, dying down about now.

When I travel to Horn games away, I have a similar, yet less extreme example. I realize that 99% of Buckeye, Husker, Aggy, or Sooner fan are probably good human beings. However, there is always that idiot trying to prove his manhood or who is drunk and just being an idiot. It happens in all realms of society. I know I am likely not going to be shot at these games, but I realize that someone might have a bias to harm me.

I have not seen anyone on this thread advocate anything less than an investigation of the shooter and justice for the kid. Prayers for the family.

I don't really see this as a racial issue. But, I do see it as an unjustified homicide that should be prosecuted. At least that's how it looks now. Perhaps more facts may surface but, based on the information received thus far, this man should be prosecuted for murder. It's not always a black issue. Just last month a man was killed in the Avery Ranch subdivision by an overzealous homeowner looking for a reason to unload on someone. That victim was hispanic. Based on the what I've heard about this particular shooter, it would have happened regardless of the race of the victim. I think you have the same type of situation in Florida. This man, Zimerman, used unnecessary force and killed an innocent teenager. I've yet to hear how he felt threatened.

Sounds like the kid broke Zimmerman's nose, Good for him! Outweighed by like 150 pounds of quivering flab and he still left his mark. Not enough by far.

Zimmerman=bully that had his bluff called by a 17 year old and pee-peed his pants when the young man was getting the best of him.

This was a tragic senseless killing.
was it more senseless that innocent people killed every single day in drive by or gang related shootings?

and you can be sure those guns used in all these killings are registered to the killer.
How many innocent people get shot to death on a sadly routine basis is Phildelphia or Detriot or any number of cities.
Chicago seems to be the leader of murders of innocent people
here is just last week end
"Ten people were killed and at least 39 others were wounded in shootings across the city this weekend.

Most of the victims, male and female, ranged in age from their mid-teens to 30s, with the notable exception of a 6-year-old girl who was shot dead as she played on the front porch of her home in the Little Village neighborhood.

Neighbors said Aliyah Shell was playing on the porch of her home in the 3100 block of South Springfield Avenue about 3:40 p.m. Saturday while her parents sat on the front steps. A small gray pickup truck stopped in the street and one person inside got out and fired four shots -- two of them hitting the little girl.

Where are the pages of outrage over this? is it because it is so sadly common no one gets angry over these innocent people getting killed ?

yes the killing of the 17 y o was horrible and senseless but is it more senseless than 10 people including a 6 y o killed in ONE city?

Did I miss BO decrying this? doesn't he have daughters?

Edit to add
apparently Philly is the leader of killings
NBC headline from Jan 26,2012
31 killings in 25 days.

sat
Uh maybe i have this wrong. You are all outraged over an young black man being killed but i don't see your thread on an even younger black girl being killed.
and I read Bo was all outraged since the young man would look like a son if Bo had one.
well Bo has daughters and this 6 y o looked like his daughter. Why isn't Bo speaking out? This even happened in his home city.
Not to mention the large numbers of innocent people killed nearly every day.

Sat explain to me WHY an innocent 6 y o( ot any of the others) killed isn't relevant?
We agree all these killings are tragic and wrong so why singel out only one?

I started this thread for a specific reason. Now, it you want to have deep, meaningful discussion about the indiscriminate murder of black children and this young girl specifically, feel free to do so,

Sat
what exactly was your ' specific' reason for starting this thread if not to bring light to innocent children being shot and killed?

sat"It was to discuss specifically the Trayvon Martin murder and why it happened? "
You are asking us? don't you know why you started this thread?

well let me remind you of your first sentences:
This happens too often and is always under reported. Black kids seem to always be the victims. Why is that? "

since as you pointed out it happens all too often and black kids seem to be the victim I would hope you'd be just as outraged over an innocent 6 y o black girl being murdered.
You sharpton BO and Jackon ( both of whom are from the same city were the 6 y o was murdered) should be outraged and lament the "under reporting" of such killings/

did you even know a 6 y o black girl was murdered in chicago along with 9 others last week end?

Either you are concerned about it all or you aren't. One murder is no more relevant than any of the others.

6721, instead of focusing on what you hope I would be interested in, why not just accept the reason I provided in response to your question? Why not do that?

In a normal case 6721, a killing leads to an arrest. Here a clear murder led to no charges. Thus the outrage. It has nothing to do with a republican party talking point?

Prodigal,

I'm very suspicious of this alleged "witness." Martin is shot. No arrest is made. There is public outrage. The police chief temporarily steps down. Federal authorities are dispatched to investigate the crime and the police actions. A wrongful death lawsuit is filed by Martin's family. Now almost a month after the shooting, an anonymous star witness who allegedly saw everything shows up for Zimmerman - a witness who didn't call 911 (or if he did, no tape was released), wasn't mentioned in the police report (anonymously or otherwise), and was never cited by authorities prior to this story.

If this witness is legitimate, then why didn't he call 911? If he called 911, why wasn't his tape released in response to Martin's family's open records request? If his statement was so pivotal, then why wasn't the content of his statement mentioned in the police report or even mentioned by law enforcement in their public statements? If this witness was talking to police earlier, then why did the police chief step down? That make no sense at all.

The circumstances surrounding this don't smell very good at all. Prosecutors may never pursue this case, but when this witness gets subpoenaed to testify in the civil case, it's going to be a cross examination worth paying to watch.

I will say again, there needs to be an investigation. I was trying to research more information in the case, and it seems to be limited. However, a few questions if anybody knows (please do not just tell me they are irrelevant):

1) Did Trayvon live in this gated community? If not, how would he get in and was this is only way to his home?

2) What is the difference between "stand your ground" laws and the laws surrounding "self-defense?"

3) I read that it was raining? Any other information on the weather?

4) It appears there is an eye witness. I saw it on a news clip out of Tampa. Was he interviewed at the police station or just at the scene? Does he have any relationship to Zimmerman?
