Perhaps there are some great stories of heroism or even basic self-defense that is championed by these 'castle doctrine,' stand your ground' type laws. I am highly suspicious of that type of legislation.
CNN just did a piece on a black male, 70+ years of age, who yelled at some skateboarders to get off of a basketball court across the street from his home. A white male playing a little ball with his 7 year old daughter 'intervenes' by asking the elder if there were signs that indicated skateboarding was off limits. They exchange words and the elder comes across the street to further the discussion. It seems that the elder then shows he has a pistol. They tussle and, according the the snippet of testimony I saw from the daughter, it seems that the dad gets on top of the elder and a shot is fired. The elder is claiming self defense, stand your ground.
I do not like a law that protects a person who goes out of their way to confront a criminal/suspect that is not endangering them and then, once engaged, kills that person out of 'self-defense.' These 'stand your ground' type laws promote that sort of ill-advised bravado, usually, it seems, over property crimes that do not require a death sentence.
Guy went to a skateboard disagreement with a gun and now it is possible the dead man's pre-teen daughter will present testimony that frees the killer of her father. ******. The law needs to be readdressed.
